By "pop," I assume you mean poorly-written bubblegum pop?
Do women who sing well-written classics count?

Do not speak to us of the greatness of poetry, Of the torches wisping in the underground, Of the structure of vaults upon a point of light. There are no shadows in our sun, Day is desire and night is sleep. There are no shadows anywhere.

Okay, that's it off the top of my head. But I recommend them all; they're artists in various different genres.

Emiliana Torrini, definitely. If you like her stuff but aren't afraid of something a bit more off-the-wall, try Bjork.
Beth Gibbons is also great. I got her solo album just recently.

I'm a huge fan of Ilse Delange, she's Dutch, so probably not that famous, but her lyrics are so beautiful and she has an amazing voice.

Bjork, Beth Orton, Emiliana Torrini are really OK. I will add Jewel, and don't know if you like Celtic music. If yes, try Loreena McKennit. I think there will be many others but i don't remember now.

I don't know what you would classify as "pop" so, I only listed a few off the top of my head. Alanis Morissette Sheryl Crow Michelle Branch Vanessa Carlton Sarah McLachlan Mandy Moore? (Maybe she's a little too pop) Liz Phair Alicia Keys

oh wow, thanks to all of you! alter eggo-what a list! the only one i've heard of on yours is Aimee Mann. oh and seven-yes the classics definetely count, and i do mean poorly written bubblegum pop (i don't mind pop in general, but girls who do pop tend to make dance tracks or songs with terrible lyrics, and i'm not too into that)
Anyone else have any?

Bjork is amazing. Probably one of the most unique female artists out there.
|
And I'll keep digging, till I feel something.

Well, then I would recommend Sarah Brightman (she sings everything from well-written pop to classics to showtunes), and like Cecilia said, Loreena McKennitt, who tends to sing classical, poetry, medieval sort of stuff. Very lush and velvety.
Tigerlily: Well, Mandy's "Coverage" is an excellent covers album, but the rest (by her own admission) is horrible bubble-gum pop.
