OTEP
« on: March 19, 2004, 12:29:20 am »

The beautiful talented Otep!! I just bought they're/her only album, and it is amazing!!! (The singer's name is Otep, but so is her band's).
Has anyone heard of them? That's Otep in my signature (if you can't already tell )

They ARE nu-metal (yeah, I know). But she is really incredible. The lyrics are so beautiful, a lot of them sound like diary entries, or little ballads.
She has a really strong voice (groals/screams a lot, I have never heard a woman scream like her! She also raps, in the nu-metal style (bah), but not in all of the songs). When she sings, it sounds like her voice is crying. It's pretty heavy, so if you like the 'death-metal' sound, then you'd probably like Otep. I don't usually like heavy stuff like this, but Otep is really amazing.

My fav songs on the album (if you're looking to download) are:

-Blood Pigs
-My Confession
-Sacrilege
-Menocide
-Emtee
-Filthee
-Jonestown Tea (#1 fav!)

I've heard of Otep but I've never heard any of their songs.  I'll see if I can download some.

Her name is Otep? That is so cool.  I want my name to be Otep.

Yeah me too! Otep Shamaya. That might not be her real name though, she might have changed it. In her songs it sounds like she was brought up in a Christian household, but she must of converted to paganism because on the official site the 'O' in 'OTEP' is written as a Wiccan pentacle. So maybe it's some kind of Wiccan name

I downloaded a live version of 'Filthee' a few days ago, because it was the only one I could find.

Last night, though, I was flipping through random radio stations, and on one station there was a song that sounded like Otep, and I was convinced that it was, and I kept listening to it because I wanted to know the end of the song.  Then at the end, the DJ guy was like:

"C'était Otep avec leur chanson et ceci et ce quoi de plus blah blah blah..."

It was the French radio station, and they said the song name in French, so I don't know what it was called.

Never mind, I just looked up the lyrics, and it was 'Posession'.

I love her voice.    I thought it was very unique, and that's how I recognized it.  It actually does sound like she's crying when she's
singing, and combined with the lyrics it's really quite powerful.

I'm not really into nu-metal/heavy/death-metal or stuff like that, but from what I've heard so far they sound pretty good.  I don't think it's the type of music I'd want to fall asleep listening to, but that's okay.

Yeah, her voice and lyrics are really powerful. A lot of the songs on the album are about her father raping her when she was a child. Just by listening to the lyrics you can tell what's going on, she's very open about it. I think the main reason why I love this band is because of her lyrics and voice. Really, if it was a male singer, I probably wouldn't like them as much, or at all. Because the lyrics would be different I prefer female voices so much more to men's though. Otep has this amazing ability to go from beautiful poetic singing, to hard core feminist screams! I don't think a man could sing like that.

Lyrics for 'Jonestown Tea'. Sad song. There's a bit in it where you hear her hitting her head and crying.

And it sounds like...armageddon
Sounds like...armageddon
Sounds like...cum and drink with me....
Cum and drink with me
And I remember him f*cking me,
And I remember liking it,
I didn't know any better...
And I remember the smell, and the pain, and the shame...
And I remember being afraid and thinking everyday,
Every single day.. that it was my fault...
Oh, but what happened to that little girl?
Who used to dream of one day ruling the world,
Who used to draw pretty pictures in my room---beneath the moon
Destroying to create
Softly praying to God
What do I do now?
What do I do now?
As I secretely masturbate...
But then I'd hear his hooves coming down the floor
With a Bible in his hand...
Softly opening my door and he'd say...
DAUGHTER! The day of your attonement is due!
Well there's 3 million sinners out there...
and that includes you!
No daddy, don't... no daddy, don't...
LEAVE ME ALONE! LEAVE ME ALONE! LEAVE ME ALONE!
NO, I DON'T WANT TO BE FREE! NO, I DON'T WANT TO BE FREE!
SO TAKE YOUR DICK OUT OF ME!
PLEASE TAKE YOUR DICK OUT OF ME! PLEASE TAKE YOUR DICK OUT OF ME! PLEASE TAKE
YOUR DICK OUT OF ME!
I'm bleeding, it's not fair...
You see, there's this little place I like to go...
I like to run and hide--deep inside,
Where all the nightmares are real, and all the monsters come alive,
Oh, but the things I've seen in soft, soft visions and terrifying prophecies,
Like serpents on the take and gods coming in all sizes and shapes
Nothing seems fulfilling anymore..
Well your temples are swollen in deceit and the body of your missionary,
He's rotting... rotting in defeat mama?
MAMA!
Are the aliens coming to take us away? (mama?)
Is armageddon gonna happen again today?
LOOK WHAT HE DID TO ME! WHY DID YOU DO IT TO ME?!
HOW COULD YOU DO IT TO ME! WHY DID YOU DO IT TO ME?!
I will not cry... I will not cry...
I--PREFER--TO--DIE! than live--this life--of LIES!
KILL WHAT YOU CAN ---- CHALLENGE EVERYTHING
Vengeance is mine...
Hey, I'm sorry baby...
please come back inside...we can laugh a little... and live and die,
no wait. see, eye got this hot pot of jonestown tea
And it's been brewing for you and me,
Oh, it only takes one sip,
Come one baby,
Surrender your lips,
I can take you someplace nice...
I can take you...someplace NICE!
Breed my disease, be my disease...
Breed my disease, be my disease...
and vengeance will be mine
It's closer than u think...
So I entered his room at 32 past noon
With my little ritual knife...
I cut out his tounge
Liberated his wife
She loved me for it other world woman,
Well, thats what she called me (Destroyer),
the one who sets you free, (cum and drink with me)
We all die like cartoons, surrender your children,
kids who like to kill, lies...

That's sad.    I want to listen to 'Jonestown Tea' now, though.

I just realized there are some downloads on their site (I'm slow).  Do you know if the songs available to download are the full songs?

The downloads probably are the full songs, otherwise I'm guessing they would of told us.

Do download 'Jonestown Tea', it'll take a while because it's a long song, but it'll be worth it

They don't have a full version (or any version) of 'Jonestown Tea'.

I looked on another site but it only had a 28 second version.

Maybe I'll just go buy the CD when I get some more money.

Really? Hmm. Oh well. I think it would be a good buy. I'd give it an 8/10. I listen to it all the time now. It's an enhanced CD too, so you get interviews with all the members and stuff. If you liked 'Posession' 'Flithee' and 'Jonestown Tea' then, yeah, I think you'd like the whole cd

I just read that they're labeled as 'avant-garde nu-metal'. Billy's going 'avant-garde'

I'll look for it.

Okay, this is really weird...  I was on Otep's site, roaming around, and I just clicked on the message board, and it said 'Hello miss hazy'.  It freaked me out.  Then I realized that I was still signed in from a month or so ago when I signed up to the Capitol Records forum when Melissa's site went up.

Anyway, Bodhisattva posts there, and he used to be a moderator at the Zwan forums when they were up.

I'm weird, because whenever I see 'avant garde' I imagine people fencing.   Only that's 'en guarde'.
