Haha, some mags called them the saviours of rock? Ay. Well, that's amusing.
Yes, Rollingstone. They find a new savior every month.

Yep. I don't think rock can be saved. Rock is rock, and that's the way it's always going to be. Sure, there may be a band that comes along and changes some shit, but not save.  There are no saviors. Only players in a game.

nobody's agreeing w/ me on how Massive Attack is underratted. I think its because they can't be grouped into a genre.
I will agree with you that Massive Attack is massively underrated (sorry, had to say it ).  They get almost no radio play that I hear (except for a college radio station I listen to sometimes) probably because, as you say, they can't be grouped.  Mentally I group them with Portishead, another band I think is underrated.  I don't know that trip-hop, as I've heard both of those categorized, has ever really picked up a large general audience, though I could be wrong as I live in the middle of nowhere musically (unless you're talking Tejano or Country, that is).   Massive Attack did a remix of the Garbage song Milk that is very good, btw.

I think Metallica is overrated.
I do like some of their songs but sometimes it just seems like their shouting too much instead of singing.

Jesus... nowadays, yes.  Their older stuff is so much better than their newer stuff.  Maybe it's because they've gone mainstream, probably.  But since their Reload album, I think they've gone downhill.  St. Anger and Frantic aren't exactly epic singles, either.

Some bands that are over-rated: Avril Lavigne, Metallica, Sum41, Linkin Park, Zwan, Busted, Good Charlotte, Nirvana (thoough I like them), Evanescence.

Some bands that are under-rated: Acts Magdalena, Atrox, Aphex Twin (excellent DJ), Blind Guardian (ah, must put a post on Blind Guardian if there hasn't been one).

I agree! It might be a bit paradoxal to bring up Mezzanine, it being their most commercially succesfull album and all, but it's in my opinion their best one and should have given them even more public acclaim than it did. And for anyone who's a fan and hasn't already heard it, I strongly reccomend the Manic Street Preachers/James Dean Bradfield remix of Inertia Creeps - it's fantastic! I think it was on the I.C. single. If you can't find it and have MSN, I'll be happy to send it over - just PM me for my address

Now for the overrated... I might be hated for saying this, but I think The Darkness are painfully overrated. In the wise words of SomethingAwful's Dr. David Thorpe: "To think that The Darkness is all business is undoubtedly a symptom of a severely miscalibrated humor detector, but [...] being ironic doesnít mean they donít suck." It was funny the first time around with I Believe In A Thing Called Love, but it doesn't work for me in the long run.
And I'll just give a loud "agreed!" to the ones who have already mentioned the likes of Good Charlotte, Busted, Linkin Park and... Well, you get the point.

Overrated: just about anything the media claims is "punk" or "saviors of rock," especially pop's pain-in-the-arse Avril Lavigne.
Linkin Park.
Fountains of' Wayne. (Gaaack)
Diana Krall.
Josh Groban (don't get me wrong, he's an excellent singer -- but they only like him because he's good looking, and so they overrate him!).
Sheryl Crow.
Anyone from Americal Idol or one of the cloned shows.
Guns'n'Roses.
Metallica.
Jet.
Darkness (in an entertaining kind of way).
Coldplay (they're good, but not a band of Mozarts as some would have you believe).
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (see above).

Underrated: Most of the bands I listen to, but to name a few: Modest Mouse, Dresden Dolls, Luscious Jackson, Nineteen Forty Five, the Postal Service, Cat Power, Spoon, Spiritualized, Elbow, Pinback, anything from the Arts&Crafts label, the Sundays, Grandaddy, Dntel, Neutral Milk Hotel, Cursive, Frost, and many others. Oh yes -- and Emiliana Torrini. Why isn't she as famous as Bjork?

I've only heard "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" but I didn't like it.

I don't think Fountains of Wayne is overrated. To be overrated, at least by my definition, is when many people place a band/group/singer in high esteem, when it's not deserved. I saw FoW as a flash in the pan; they had "Stacy's Mom" become a huge hit and while tons found it catchy, they faded away. No one really talks about them anymore, not even to praise them for their artistic ingenuity... undoubtedly because a) hardly anyone remembers them and/or b) no one thought they were utterly fantastic in the first place.

As for Josh Groban, I've not heard his music, but I have read that he sounds like Clay Aiken - which would follow with your description of him as an excellent singer, but... I think it's unfair to first say he sings well, but then add that people (girls, I'm assuming) like him only because he's good-looking.

How is that possible? If I were to listen to him frequently, I'd be annoyed if someone figured it was only because I thought he was cute. It's the same when people assume you're into the trendy, mainstream music a la American Idol if you like Clay Aiken. It's possible to enjoy someone just for their voice, lyrics, and songs.

I know Clay Aiken does not write his songs (in fact, he is given horrible, cheesy lyrics to sing) but it is lazy, in my opinion, to just lump him in with Kelly Clarkson, Justin Guarini, Ruben Studdard and the lot, simply because he was on the show with them.

The Darkness is very overrated. And maybe I'm biased because I think they are completely full of themselves having walked out on Loveline (a radio show) because the two hours weren't solely devoted to them. (But hey even Elijah said they were overrated so I feel justified in my opinion.)

I think Smashing Pumpkins is underrated. They should have been given the kind of attention Nirvana was given. I think they're brilliant.

I really love Art of Noise and think they are underrated and also not really heard of. They have some weird songs, but they also have some really beautiful songs like Dreaming in Colour, Opus of 4, and Moments in Love.

I also really like Nusound. "Majorca" is my favorite of their songs. They are new-age like Art of Noise, but have their own distinct sound. It is truly beautiful music.

That's about it. He has a good voice, a very nice voice, buuuuuut.... other guys like Andrea Bocelli are better. Yet Groban gets the attention... why? Well, let's just say he gets a lot of questions and coverage similar to that of movie heartthrobs...

I'm afraid that's why I don't really listen to Groban. I listen to his stuff if someone else is playing it, but I do not wish to be part of a horde by getting it myself.

Maybe once he gets married, or there are some other "classical music" hunks on the scene and he is not so popular. I'll try him in five years.

The Darkness are one-hit wonders, so no worries...

It's because Billy Corgan didn't kill himself instead of Kurt.

I don't think that's true at all. Nirvana was a superb band, and Kurt was a lyrical genius, much sharper, visually incongruent, and cutting than Corgan, who can be pretentious and annoying. I like the Pumpkins a lot, but there is no comparison. Their sounds are completely different anyway, the Pumpkins being dreamy and expansive, and Nirvana being cynical, cutting, and often minimalist.

There are bands that the mainstream overrates (Offspring, Limp Biskit, Nickelback, etc.) and then there are bands that indie poseurs overrate, and two of those bands are Modest Mouse and the Flaming Lips. They are both good, but no where near worth the hype surrounding them. Radiohead--worth the hype! Pixies--SO worth the hype.

Now a truly underrated band? Built to Spill, Built to Spill, Built to Spill. Gotta throw Guided by Voices in there too, and the Melvins. I saw them open for flash-in-the-pan Helmet and it was a travesty.

The Darkness are underrated in my opinion.  And certainly not One Hit Wonders.  I think American's may have more the opinion of them being one hit wonders because over there they are.  They only know I Believe In a Thing Called Love and they judge them by this.  But The Darkness have made many other brilliant songs in their first album and i'm sure have plenty more to come.  Justin is a great entertainer and has cool vocal tallent.  And he can actually play instruments well where as alot of other new bands that come out can't.  And the guys are all good at what they do.  They're underrated.
