well i think alot of bands are overrated because of the media attention... people wouldnt like them half as much if they werent "popular".
personally i like alot of kiwi music which is underrated around the world.
Personally i dont like a song for who plays it but for how good the song is

I think NIN is ridiculously underrated -- most people can't get past "Closer" (and by most people I mean the general public, not you guys  ). But the songs are incredibly dense -- and by that I mean, like, musically, orchestrally layered, not necessarily "deep". It's like watching a really good sci-fi/mystery movie -- y'know, every time you watch it, you see something different that you didn't notice before, and then it makes more sense. I feel the same way listening to some of the songs -- every time you hear them, you pick up on something new. It makes it so rewarding to listen to them over and over again!
And from the *other* side of my eclectic music collection: Hanson is also, I think, ridiculously underrated. They got written off as a teenybopper act so quickly, which really isn't fair, because no one takes the time to pay attention to them anymore, and all the teenyboppers have moved on by now. But they write, and play, all their own music -- they don't have vocal or dance coaches -- and the music is really more of mix between blues and old fashioned rock than anything else. Which is definitely not teenybopper. I'll allow that they're not the best act out there, but they're way better than they get credit for.
As for overrated? Hmm, where to start... I'm not even gonna touch the obvious ones *cough* Justin Timberlake *cough* but I have to agree that Nirvana is pretty overrated. And it pains me to admit that -- I love the music to death, really I do -- but it's not that innovative if you think about it. It's still great music, and I still think Kurt Cobain wrote it from the heart (yes, I'm being cheesy and sentimental), but there's not that much to make it stand out from other so-called grunge bands. But other than that, I dunno. I'm fairly forgiving when it comes to music.

Most people haven't even heard of any of the bands and singers that come from here, they are really good!

I don't believe Nirvana is overrated, just, maybe over exposed? I mean, they were an excellant band, but nowadays all the "cool" alternative kids and there mothers are in love with nirvana. It's sad that all the real fans have to deal with so many wannabes. Same with the Beatles for the softer, retro kids. It seems like everybody has to be into vinyl, wear all stars, and dye their hair some wild color. All good stuff, really, if the person's really like it, but I detest trend followers

I see what you mean about them being overexposed, but I think they're both. Overexposed and overrated. You hear about them everywhere, yes, but you also hear about how great they were, how ground-breaking, how just fabulous  and everything... I'm not all that into grunge, so maybe that affects my opinion. Either way I just think they're given too much credit.

hmm...
i don't think nirvana is overrated, they're simply good.
the white stripes are overrated, to me, i mean, i can see why you'd like them but they're not that great.
Okgo is underrated .
Ret hot chilli peppers are slightly overrated. i like them, but their songs tend to get slightly dull or messy.
many little punk bands are overrated, just because it's the trend.
many little rock bands are underrated, just because there are so many of them.
metallica is definetely overrated, guess that's because they're the 'fathers' of modern metal.
airguitaring is underrated.

*shrug* To each their own. I don't think they were "good", just..okay.
How are the White Stripes overrated? I guess it depends on where you live or what type of media you view/listen to, because I never hear about how the White Stripes are so great. If I did, I probably wouldn't like them as much because I dont't think they're the best thing ever; I just enjoy their music.
The RHCP's new stuff is a bit bland, I think. I still think they deserve praise for their career so far.

nobody's agreeing w/ me on how Massive Attack is underratted. I think its because they can't be grouped into a genre.

I don't think anyone has saved Rock & Roll. It's just fine, as long as some overrated bands don't get stuck as being rock when they're not.

I heard some people from my school talking about 'Massive Attack' on the bus. But i've never heard them.
I think the Chili Peppers are overrated, but im not a fan, so....
