International Women's Day!

From Wikipedia's article International Women's Day (IWD) is marked on the 8th of March every year. It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.
So, do you do anything to celebrate/demonstrate this day?
It's my brother's birthday aswell today, he was born in 1994 with a male midwife

Thanks for starting this thread Marit! I don't think I have anything planned for today, but I know there are lots of things going on in bars and stuff round here.
Anybody else think it was quite a nice turn to have the first female Best Director at the Oscars last night, coming on Woman's Day?

The first female Best Director is awesome! Really in the spirit of Women's Day!
I've bought myself some chocolate to be extra good to myself. I know there's a lot of demonstrations and stuff around in Norway.

I think it's weird to have a 'womensday'... I get it, it's all in the thought of emancipation and all, but I find it strange. I'm against a specific day for races, sexual-orientations or, in this case, genders, because I think it's not really fair towards the other races, sexual-orientations or gender. If women have a special day of their own, it'd only be fair if men would get one too. And what's so special about this day anyways? For me it's just an ordinary Monday, I don't do anything special. And what would men do on their day? I don't know, I suppose it's all in good thought, but I don't really get the purpose of the special womensday.

Oh really? Haha wow... Hmmm... Do they actually know? Because I've never heard a guy talk about it haha. And what do they celebrate on their day?

They celebrate the same way women do (or at least some women). They identify areasa where men are being discriminated against like women do.
I personally don't celebrate I.W.D.

Oh hmm... well, I still think it's weird... I mean... come on I could make the day I didn't have a curfew anymore as "A DAY", to celebrate me being more independent. I know, I know, it's kinda different, but it's also kind of the same. I don't see why we'd need a special day to be happy about the privileges we've got.
Besides, a Women's day just emphasizes the difference between men and women. It shows we were once different and that we now have the same rights and all... I think we should just pretend like we've always been equal, because if we keep thinking: "In the early days I wouldn't have been aloud to work or go to school..." I don't know, I think it creates stereotyping and all that jazz

Hm, I understand what you're saying - but at the same time, it's true that women weren't always equal to men, and I don't see any reason not to celebrate the equality that there is now.
Victoria - is there any particular reason why you don't celebrate IWD?

I tried to write it before but for the life of me I cannot think of the right words. The only I can think of is patriotic (it's not the right word but it is all my mind is giving me at the minute). I do sometimes get fed up with always hearing about how rough women had it before we were equal. I appreciate all the opportunities I as a woman have been given but I don't need to hear "I didn't get the job because I'm a woman" not maybe you just weren't the best applicant there. We have to stop using things like this as an excuse for our own failings. Sometimes yes it is because of your gender (race is a different issue for me) but it's not always the case.

And that is exactly what I was trying to say but couldn't because of a lack of the good words, lol

I'm not very patriotic to women!
