"He needs to grow-up"

I was browsing on the Internet Movie Database and a thread of Elijah's discussions caught my eye. I understand that it's someone's opinion that he/she would like for a certain person to grow-up, but...
What if Elijah doesn't want to grow-up?
Possibly he enjoys the character roles that show different signs of thier goodness in their own ways. Heck, they don't even need to be the main hero of the story.
Elijah Wood is a human being just like you and me. I believe that he is youth at heart, and that's another thing why I love him.
Perhaps there are certain roles for him to be a "man". (like in the upcoming Romantics this year) But I still think he likes to act out characters who are completely different from him, even if they act childish and immature, even at the end of the story.
I hope I'm not overreacting over this silly comment on IMDB.com. ^^; (I tend to be a judgemental person quite a lot, and I apologize)

just for the record, i disregard a lot of stuff at those imdb message boards.
movie roles don't and shouldn't dictate whether someone is "grown up" as they say. what counts is how the person conducts himself in real life, am i correct? IMO, elijah was grown up at the age of 15. more mature than some twice that age.
if elijah chooses roles that take on a less than mature nature, which i don't think he necessarily does, perhaps it's to keep some of those less responsible attributes that the young doesn't have to deal with. elijah had to grow up quickly at a young age and maybe some of his youth that was bypassed in real life would be portrayed in some of the characters he plays.

Interesting topic, Allie!
I don't understand how he isn't grown-up though. I mean, he has done some children's films, like Happy Feet, but I'd say even most of his roles are of a serious/adult nature - ie. Jonathan in 'Everything Is Illuminated', Aaron in 'Day Zero', just to mention the first two that spring to mind.
And anyway, not being grown-up isn't the same as having fun. I hope when I'm in my mid-late twenties I can still embrace my inner-child.

Yeah, I agree. Elijah is very mature, and always has been. Doing some animated films doesn't make him immature. I love Elijah just the way he is.

He's way more mature than a lot of people in age, especially for being famous. I mean, you never hear about him getting trashed at a club the night before, or plowing into someone else's car because they we're too drunk to drive, like some other actors/actresses we could name. Granted he's very good about keeping his private life away from the paparazzi, and that's a good thing. Rather than people who just eat up all the attention that they get from photographers who only want a scandal. I think he's chosen a lot of very mature roles, even when he was very young, and has performed those roles brilliantly.

To start I think it's unfair to judge the statement this personmade without actually postingit
Quote:| Elijah, we love you, you have fabulous eyes, but your a man now and need to stop doing such goody goody stuff and be a real actor and take on some good roles. You've been successful in managing your career to date, but you need to come out of your comfort zone and take on leading man roles. Do something challenging like a gay theme movie, rape victim, or a murderer. We need to see the other side of Happy Feet. Hooligans sucked although you did smoke a ciggarette and wore blue jeans. I was hoping you might get bent in that movie. |
This person simply wants meatier movies and characters from Elijah.

Sorry for not doing that earlier in my first post, Damita Jackson. ^^;; I guess I didn't understand and got so worked up about the entire 'grow-up' title in the thread on the IMDB board. It really shouldn't be such of a big deal, anyway. (blows out air)
Also I felt afraid about posting what he/she said. I didn't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Jeez, I think after I've actually read what the person said, I feel even more annoyed! I think their statement is rather ignorant in that they don't seem to appreciate that Elijah has taken on "challenging" roles (I'd hardly call a suicidal writer trying to fill his last days before being drafted a breeze to play).
Allie - don't worry about over-reacting! It really is interesting to have a topic like this on the forum to discuss, so thanks for starting it.

exactly! thanks for saying that mary.
if they were to look at the list of films he's done, even for a child actor, he's been involved in many adult themed films and not always the typical child films.
elijah has stated many times he'd like to do roles that challenge him and are different from himself or anything else he's done. i think if the role is meaty and well written, he'll accept it. but it's his choice and he has to feel it in his soul. if it doesn't click for him, he won't do it.
this is a reason why i would have loved to seen films like the experiment and the passenger take place. for him to accept them in the first place, they hit elijah in a way that he thought would challenge him in more ways than he can imagine.
yes, this is a very interesting topic.

I haven't replied to this and it is very good topic! I agree with Vicky where she stated that the person simply wants more meatier movies and characters for Lij I think he has grown up fine in fact he was probably more mature at a much earlier age due to acting from age 8

This is an awesome topic. I know everybody's already said that, but I thought I'd just throw my opinion into the mix!
I think that's unfair to say that he needs to grow up. As people have said, being a child star has meant that he has had to grow up and be mature from a very young age. Luckily, this hasn't affected him in the way that it has with some child stars.
I don't think he's deliberately choosing roles which are supposedly 'not meaty' (for want of a better phrase) - he's obviously choosing roles which he thinks are right, and he's done a lot of varied work, so there's a possibility he'll do it in the future.
Personally, I just adore the fact that he's still young at heart!

I also saw this on his IMDB page and it angered me. But you can't take IMDB too seriously, as it attracts lots of trolls that just want to start arguments or make broad statements with nothing to back it up. I think people who say these things about Elijah aren't familiar with his work outside of LOTR his teen roles in The Faculty and Deep Impact, or the stuff he did as a kid. They need to see him in Green Street Hooligans, Sin City, Day Zero, etc.
