Elijah's Accent?

Sorry to ask another question so soon, but I don't live in the US and I get confused over accents. I lived in England til I was 8 then moved to N. Ireland, about the same age as when Lij moved from Iowa to LA, I believe. I haven't lost any of my English accent despite having lived in N. I. for half my life, and I was wondering if Lij has an Iowan or LA accent, or a mixture of both? Thanks!

Good question. I was wondering about that too. I would imagine it's a mixture but I really can't say. For a while, during and post LOTR, he had a little bit of an English accent.. 
I can relate to what you say about keeping your accent.. a few years ago I met a German woman in England who'd lived there for about 50 years but she still had a strong German accent, despite not speaking German anymore. And a relative of mine has lived in Australia for about 30 years now and her accent is a mixture between Australian and German. It sounds great.

interesting question. 
i'm from ohio which is in the midwest, same as iowa. it's really hard for me to tell if elijah has a california accent or a mix of that, the midwest and european. i still at times here his english accent come through.
but overall, when i hear elijah speak, he sounds like i do. a boring midwest accent.

Haha, I wasn't aware Californians had a distinct accent...unless you count the 'surfer' accent that hardly anyone really has. To me there really isn't much of a difference of accents from state-to-state. And when you do find places with distinct accents like Texas or Minnesota or Wisconsin, not very many people actually have the accent. Especially in the south.

Sort of is such a harmless thing to say, it's just a filler, it doesn't really mean anything. But after certain things sort of means everything - like after "I love you" or "You're going to live."

I've noticed, being from Nebraska (which is right next to Iowa) that some Midwesterners have a certain 'twang', if you will.
Like, when we say button, it sounds more like, "Butt-in". And when we say mountain: "Mount-in". I think we have a hard time with the 'ain' sound. I haven't noticed it when Elijah speaks, but I'm not really looking for it. But I think I'll start listening for it from now on.

that's the thing with accents. you can really hear one if it's not like yours. i'm not looking to hear an accent from elijah either, but when his english one comes through, that's when i notice it.
btw, i say bu-nnn. no "T".

I though Elijah has California accent and English accent..like a mixetuse of it. I was born in California and have lived there for afew years so I have California accent which is lovely  ( but love english accent the most ) and I though Elijah talkes that way..no accent from the mid-west..guess I was wrong?

Well, I'd definitely say that Elijah has what some people will call an "American" accent. Actually, it's really called the Midland accent, and it dominates the U.S. and Canada. I'm from Texas, and I have the exact same accent as him, in fact I don't really know many people with a Southern accent, only people living in rural areas in the South tend to have Southern accents here.
I went to New York this summer, and most people seemed to have the same accent, so regional accents in the U.S. are not very common anymore. Most people speak with the regular Midland accent, whether they are from the Midwest, West Coast, East Coast, or South.
In LOTR, I think Elijah did a good British accent, but since I already knew that he wasn't British, so I knew he was just "putting it on". However, I do know of some people who were British themselves, and had never heard of Elijah Wood before, and when they saw LOTR, they thought he was British, so he must have done the accent pretty well.

Sorry, frodo love, I would so have to disagree with you. US regional accents are alive and well, at least in the several states in which I have lived. And it doesn't require a rural upbringing to produce a Southern accent.
That said, let me get back on topic here, which is Elijah's accent. I would have to say it comes closest to a Midwest accent, which, actually, is as close to having no discernible accent as one seems to get in the US. It's a good one to have in his business.

I'm not saying that regional accents are dead, I'm just saying that they are scarcer than they were, say a hundred years ago. I know they are still quite alive and well in some Southern states and in some parts of the Northeast. When I said that only people in rural areas tended to have Southern accents, I was only talking about Texas. I've lived here all my life, and I hear very few people who have Southern accents.
However I have met people from suburban or urban areas from other states in the South, like Arkansas and Tennessee who [/i] do[i] have a Southern accent, so by no means are regional accents dead, they are just less common. That said, I agree about Elijah's accent being a Midwest or Midland accent, like the ones newscasters have, and like the ones many Americans in many states have.

Interesting to hear everyone;'s thoughts here after such a long time. I have heard since that he 'soaks up local accents like a sponge' or something like that, and I for one thought he was originally English, since LOTR was the 1st thing I saw him in.

Heh, I do that too -- involuntarily. I always worry that the locals think I'm making fun of them when I start talking like them, but I really can't help it.
