It can be due to shyness or social akwardness which even some actors/celebrities suffer from. I like to think of myself as reasonably intelligent but I completley lack the social skills to show that in conversation due to very extreme shyness/social phobia. Elijah always seems to completely understand whatever he's doing, which I like because it means he's interested and enjoying what he's doing.
