I do think Paolini writes in a very Tolkien-esque style...but the plots are pretty different, in my opinion.

I enjoyed the book but I felt the movie was lacking a lot - it didn't seem to have the same substance as the book.

Its a good read, Enara, if you're a fan of Tolkien or even just fantasy I would highly recommend it!

Never read Eragon, but lots of people say its a nice book by this guy forgot who  . One day I'll read it though, I just have to be patient lol.

It is a good read, as I've mentioned above. I think there is eventually going to be third one, but haven't heard anything recently about this.

IMO This book is an unoriginal rip-off of Tolkien - lucky for Christopher Paolini his folks are publishers!!!

The third one, Brisingr, is comming in September I think.
And, I can't see why you think it's a rip-off of tolkien. Not at all! Then you must think that all fantasy is that!

Yes Marit, actually I think the majority of modern fantasy writers owe a great debt to Tolkien, some of whom openly admit this... I've read numerous novels where whole chunks of plot and many characters seem to have been lifted wholesale from his books... BUT -
as Tolkien himself 'borrowed' liberally from fairytales, Norse myths, Arthurian legend and so forth, I guess I shouldn't hold it against Mr Paolini should I? LOL! 
HOWEVER - I haven't seen the movie, but even my 11 year old daughter, after watching 'Eragon' on DVD, said: "Oh Mum, it's just like Lord of the Rings - only not as good!"  
P.S. Saw a funny review on youtube once which decribed Eragon as being like a convergence of the plots of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings!!! If I find this again, I'll link it in this thread.

I don't think there's a point in what you say at all. I'm sorry. But as long as you accept that Tolkien has borrowed things from old stories, then you should accept that Paolini makes a whole new book and concept with elves and dragons. You really can't call that a rip-off from Tolkien.

Yes, Marit, I have read the book, otherwise I would not feel justified in commenting on it.
I accept that you don't think I have a valid point, but I'm only stating MY opinion of Paolini's book, you're not obliged to agree with me!
IMHO a lot of the characterisations, patterns of language and some of the plot bears a remarkable resemblance to Tolkien's work:
The name "Eragon" is too similar to 'Aragorn"
The Urgals approximate the Urukhai, and their blood is black as well.
The older man/guide figure Brom dies reasonably early in the piece, as does Gandalf (as indeed does Obi Wan in Star Wars)
The languages spoken by Paolini's characters are so similar to Tolkien's 'constructed' languages, (esp the dwarf and urgal words) that they may as well have been written by him.
I could go on ad nauseum, including boring everybody with quotes from the book that are written in a really similar style, but this could turn into a never-ending debate about the merits of this work, and that of other 'fantasy' authors, so I'll just leave it here...
