Quote from: Victoria Jackson P.Y.T on June 01, 2008, 09:34:44 am To be fair... who doesn't? lol! It's not like there's any real talent in Eurovision. I don't know anyone who watches it seriously. It's just for the comedic value, which Wogan adds to greatly!
If he'll be replaced it will be with some dosey generic presenter who is told what to say, and it will be taken seriously and therefore become dull(er)

I actually don't believe in Eurovision much anymore. I used to watch them religiously as a kid (and I still do but just for entertainment), but now I've noticed some things about it.
Eurovision has been called kind of cheesy. I think there is a reason: all the contestants and countries have very different tastes and they try too hard to please others and that's when visual side of the show might become more important than original songs. There are still some good songs left in each contest though.
Many good bands have come from many Eurovision countries without the contest. So you could say that as a music contest it's not as important as it used to be. It might make a new star for a year, but after that they stay as Eurovision stars and won't be aired on radio much. Eurovision does'nt make as clear stars as... let's say - Idol.
The system of giving 1-12 points by each country does'nt seem to be equal. It you count with pure maths, the countries with less people get more power per a person to decide the winner of the contest. And if the system was different and the votes were simply counted as a vote per person without giving points, countries with more people would have the power. If the country voting should work, the voting system should be more complicated than it already is.
Again, do we need to vote as a country? Maybe it would be most simple and fair to just vote as Europe, one equal vote for each and no single country stats needed.
Yes, Eurovision has many flaws and imo can't be taken too seriously but I still can watch it for an entertainment.

^ Nice analysis there Lorie, I agree with pretty much everything you said there!
I'm reviving this topic because I just logged in to read my emails and this was on the yahoo news page! I'm interested to see whether this will actually make a difference, or whether these juries will just vote tactically as well.

So, did we all watch Eurovision last night?
I really enjoyed it this year. The voting seemed to be less tactical than other years, which was brilliant - and I loved Norway's song, so well done to Norway! And the UK came 5th, which was good - Jade had a great voice. All in all, a good year for Eurovision!
I also thought Graham Norton was very good doing the commetating for the BBC - not as good as Wogan, but funny all the same.

yes .. I watched all of them last night. The show was fantastic really.Norway's song was good. But,I think,it wasn't good for being winner.I liked Iceland,Azerbaijan and Greece's songs much. Our song (Turkey) wasn't great.Perhaps,we could be second or third and " forth " isn't bad.I was suprised to see Arash for Azerbaijan.I like his all songs and you should try his songs (f.e : pure love !) Great choice ! ... Finally,I am unpatient for next year ... !

I thought Turkey was pretty good - the song was really catchy. Azerbaijan was good too - Iceland just sounded like Taylor Swift.

Allthough, I hate the song. I'm so sick and tired of it! And he is on the front page of all magazines all the time... *sighs*

I know its kinda late commenting this, but while eurovision was on tv, I did not stay tuned to listen to every country cause sometimes it gets boring . lol. But i did watch one contestant from Norway... named Alexander Rybak, I thought he was really good! His violin playing was unique.
My background is Portuguese, but i am sorry, Portugal had that girl sing this song, it was bor-ing! Lol. Same old melodies from portugal over and over again. So surprised it made it until 15th place.

Portugal was OK, as far as I remember - the singer looked like a girl I know. I actually really liked Alexander - did he really play that violin?

Sorry to double post, but it's been so long I think it's OK.
Eurovision time is coming up again!
Ireland has chosen a song: Niamh Kavanagh with 'It's For You'. Hm, I'm torn...I don't think it's great, but maybe it'll do OK in Eurovision...we haven't done a ballad in a while. Though I've heard loads of people wanting Ireland to enter 'My Lovely Horse' from Father Ted... NK won it for us way back in 1993, so here's hoping we at least get to the final this year.
Anyone else looking forward to it?
