anything you want..it doesn't really matter. You can start a convesation with anyone you want on this thread, I just hope this thread is ok with them mods ::)

Cuplie, what were we exactly talking about? ;) ;D

Post by: Culpie on April 24, 2007, 12:21:51 am

I think we were talking about how bad you were for monopolizing the newbie's thread, Shayda. ;D Heh heh!

Good heavens...let's see if I can remember. I think we started welcoming the newbie...and got chatting with Kate06 (who is yet another nice EW fan)...then talked about nicknames...my new niece, Shawna....hmmmm....and we laughed over me misunderstanding that you thought Shawna should have been named after me...as you liked my name. Remember? I thought you meant my nickname, Culpie...and it gave us a chuckle.

Ok...so what do we talk about now? How's your vision doing? Last time you were having trouble with double vision. How's school going? Are you back in the "groove" after your vacation?

How's that? Will that get us started? :D BTW, great idea to move our conversation to the appropriate thread! :)

Here I am, Vern! Sorry...I hadn't check my emails. Oops. Didn't mean to scare ya. ;)

BTW - I love the new name...it is so fitting. We must be too weird for everyone else, eh? ;D I am still giggling over the new thread name. It is so fitting.

Ugh! Tests and finals...yikes! However, I am sure you will do really well. You are one smart chickadee!

If you are under weight it might cause you to get cold easily. Do you think that might be part of it?

I am so glad that your vision troubles have settled down again! Whew! I am my very first migraine last week...so you will find me even more sympathetic with your head pain. It was quite the experience. :-\

Are ya surviving school?

Hiya, Debra! It is ok...you can post about whatever you would like too. We are up for anyone's ramblings. ;D

Vern, sorry to hear you hurt your toe! :'( Owwwwww...that always hurts!

I had my two oldest nephews overnight this weekend (ages 13 & 8). We had pizza, strawberries and chocolate pudding, played dominos and watched a movie. Then took them to church and breakfast before bringing them home. I think we all had a good time. :D

Ooo...rain would be lovely! We had very small thunderstorm this evening. I wish it had really rained hard...it is pretty dry out here. :-\

I want my Cupcake :'( where is my sweetie? Cuplie? :(

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on May 19, 2007, 01:34:10 am

Sorry, Vern! Here I am! ;D I was out of town attending a conference...but now I am back! I got a little worried when you weren't online for awhile...but then Elanor posted your computer trouble on the boxie. Whew! Sooooo....how are you, my dear?

Not too much going on. I attended a Human Resource conference and had a wonderful time. It was two days packed with speakers and all sorts of HR networking. Very fun and useful. However, I am pooped. I came home and slept for about 2 hours...and now I am tired again as it is 11:30pm for me. Yawwwwwnnnn! But I just had to check to see if you had posted online. 8)

My doctor wants me to have a MRI of my head in the near future. Ugh! I have had some trouble with head pressure and numbness. So I am a little nervous. :-\ Hopefully, the results will be negative. I have quite a bit of trouble with my sinuses & ears...so maybe that is all it is. Here's hoping! :) I figured you of all people would under. ;) I'll let you know how it turns out. Right now I have to wait for the MRI to be authorized by my insurance...so it shouldn't take long.

Hiya, Pam & EW! Welcome to Veronica's and Culpie's ramblings! You are very welcome! :D We basically talk about anything...and since we were being bad and taking over a newbie thread....Vern thought we should move over into our own thread to talk about anything. Hmmm...did that make sense? :-\ So how are ya? What's on your minds today?

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Nutella Sister on May 20, 2007, 03:39:25 pm

Ooooh Cuplie now I got why you're going to have an MRI..I was worried and now I'm praying for you to have great results. Hope it;s nothing important when they see the results..did you say head pressure? do you get headaches? if you didn't have problem with you ear and..I'd say you have an AVMbut now I dare to say it couse I'm not a doctor but...you can tell your doctor one of my friends thisnk I have an AVM, and them let me know what he thinks? ;D ::)

Cupcke when is your birthday? ??? It's shame I haven't asked that yet :-[

I'm having my terrible finals in 1 more days and the first one is Theology and i feel like throwing my book out of the window right now cause I've studuied all day yesterday and today and :-X and I still have to study 6 more lessons :-\ I'm getting crazy but I'll leave for tomorrow..I have to study all day tomorrow? :'( Cross your fingers for my finals and pray pray pray, ok? ;) :)

for now I don't have anything else to say just a hug to all and a special one for my cupcake! *Hugs* :-*

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on May 21, 2007, 12:26:54 am

Thanks so much, sweetie! :-* I will certainly keep you in my prayers for your finals...but I am confident that you will do very well! :D

I am so glad you are back online! It just isn't the same without you around. ;D

I don't really have pressure....just this weird kinda numb feeling. It is really hard to describe. Five years ago they diagnosed me with "Euchstatean tube dysfunction". Basically, it means fluid trapped in your ears. It can make your ears pretty sore from the pressure...but eventually it pops and drains. Really no big deal....just uncomfortable and a annoying. Essentially, there is no real cure...just prescribe a RX. Along with the ET Dysfunction I have trouble with my sinuses in my head plugging up....so this is our starting point for now. I appreciate the prayers, Shayda! I am a little nervous, but hoping for the best. I will certainly talk to my doctor about the AVM...who knows...it could be.

My birthday is July 23rd. :D And when is yours? I haven't thought to ask either...so don't feel bad. ;)

Whelp, I better go to sleep! Bye for now! :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Nutella Sister on May 22, 2007, 09:39:33 am

I got you wrong last time cupcake, that cannot be a AVM it's just what I got wrong about the pressure you have in your head ::) ;D Well I think I can be a good dcotor in the future but definetly a better vet! ;D

Anyways, I'm glad to asked ya about your birthday before the exact day! My birthday is Agust 26th. I was hopeing you were born in agust before I knew the date :-[ ;D but I'm glad that our borthday is both in Summer and heeeeey kate's birthday is in July too! :D

Ooooh finals..I so did a disaster on my theology exam today and I have to study Chemistry for thursday ::) :P Well better than theology ofcource!!!! ;D I just have to keep smiling like this> >:( to this > ;D
::)

Hey there, Chickeepea! MRI tomorrow (Wed, May 23rd at 2pm). :-\ I will be brave...or at least attempt it. ;)

Our birthdays are pretty darn close...a little more than a month apart. That is pretty fun! And Kate's is in July too?

Good heavens, girl! You are certainly taking some hard courses!!! Whew...it makes my head spin. :o Did you really do badly on your theology?

I better scoot...gotta busy day tomorrow. I will let you know how the MRI goes. Bye for now! ;D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!

Oooooooh dear, chemistry exam tomorrow..please DO pray all! :-\

Cupcake, I'm praying for you and to have good results on your MRI.You don't need to attmep cause you are brave hon! :-* Think of me in the machin and..if your having a med then you're kinda asleep.. ;)

:PRight, I did a desastor on theology as I'm thinking by now but who knows? maybe I'm wrong? ::) ???

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on May 23, 2007, 11:20:17 pm

Howdy, howdy, my dear! I can't stay logged in for long...but I wanted to pop in and tell you that I survived my MRI. 8) They don't have all the results yet, but said that I don't have any tumors or hemorrages...basically nothing major. They are taking a closer look at them and a radiologist will be reading them this evening. The "results" should be in my primary care doctor's hands by tomorrow afternoon.

All in all it wasn't too bad. I was only in up to my waist and they had a mirror attached to the head guard thingie...so I could see out. The tech said the pictures came out great. I got to listen to my favorite Celtic (Irish) CD during the procedure...so that made it seem quicker. Kinda loud isn't it? :-\ I was sooooo relieved to hear that I don't have a tumor...now I am anxiously awaiting the results...to see if they can see any reason why I have that numb feeling.

At any rate, thanks for the prayers and good thoughts! I think it really did help me! :D And I will let you know when I hear further details. Have you gotten your results yet? I am praying for great results!

Hang in there, Kiddo with all your exams! Eek...they sound really tough! I am so glad those days are behind me....I was never very good at tests. :P Hopefully, you are wrong about your theology exam. And GOOD LUCK on your Chemistry tomorrow! I will be praying for ya!

Toodles for now! ;D

Oh boy, I bet you can't wait to read the next HP book! I can just hear your excitement. ;D As you know, I am not much of a HP fan...but I can sympathize with you anyway. :D

I have my fingers crossed that the results for your MRI will be great! Hopefully, you won't need another one. I have a follow-up appointment on Friday with my doctor to discuss the MRI findings...so I will hear "officially" about it then.

Good job on your Chemistry exam!!! I knew you could do it!

My whole family, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews were over today to celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is actually tomorrow (Monday) and it is a day when we remember all those who shed their blood for during the wars. All the cemeteries are decorated with flowers...and any tomb of a soldier is decorated with a small American flag. It may sound weird...but it is very impressive to go to the military cemetaries and see all those red, white and blue flags flying. It is a wonderful time to remember that if it wasn't for the dedication of our soldiers we wouldn't enjoy the freedom we have today.

We had a BBQ / picnic with hot dogs, hamburgers, salad, chips and so on. The kids had a great time! The weather was pretty good too. It didn't start to rain until just about the time everyone was going home. :)

Did you do anything exciting this weekend? Do you have any more exams coming or are you done?

No one is here ::) Typical. I hope I can join the thread, I love to chat, especially when real life is really boring. Like right now. I'm waiting here at school (stil an hour to go) before I have a conversation with my teacher about my practice, so I thought I would just start rambling here (because that's what the thread is about lol :)) So how are you guys. Anything exciting going one in your life?

I actually found a job! so that's pretty exciting right? I went to the school where I will teach on Thursday, and tomorrow (Friday) I really start teaching. I'm really nervous, because it's my firts job ever. I have the job until teh end of June, so wish me luck!

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on June 01, 2007, 01:18:20 am

Hi Artanis! You are quite welcome to join Vern and I! :D As you can tell, we just ramble all over the place...but it is fun that way! We tend to miss each other because Vern is about 12 hrs difference from me...so she is usually on when I am sleeping. :-\ It drives us nutty sometimes. I live in America and she is in Persia. However, thanks to A&F we can keep in touch anyway. Where do you live?

Vern, why don't you tell Artanis why you started this thread? ;) Better watch out, Artanis...she is a bad influence. Hee hee! ;D

So you are starting to teacher? How exciting!!! What grades or subjects will you be teaching? Have you recently graduated from school or are you switching careers?

Oh poor, Vern! I feel bad about your little finger. :'( Sorry to hear that your physic exam bad, but you must be sooooo excited that A&F boxie buddy is going to get you HP's autograph (Artanis...Vern is a little bit of a HP fan...so we have to humor her...hee heeh) ;) I think the group on the boxie is so darn nice. I try to keep up with their postings even though I don't often post now.

Going to the doctor's tomorrow for MRI follow-up...hang in there and I will keep ya posted.

Tomorrow is a busy day for me. I have an extra day off and it is going to be packed (wrote about it on my Live Journal...but I don't know if you guys have an account). But basically this will be my day: up and breakfast with my folks; coffee with my brother, lunch with a good friend of mine; visit my former coworkers; doctor's appointment and then meeting my sister and current coworkers for drinks and dinner. Whew...busy busy day!

How about you ladies? Any big plans for the weekend?

I was like...."WHAT? how did you find out?" I had my digi cam and I took some vids from him! He said "nothing is impossible when you see Pooria" I was so blushing :-[

Thanks for the warm welcome, I feel so loved :D

Shayda: glad you never have to see the teacher again ;) that must be a relieve. How's your finger doing?

Culpie: nice to meet you! I'm from Belgium actually, that's somewhere between America and Persia lol ;D. If you don't know where it is, here's a map: http://gendep.iop.kcl.ac.uk/images/Maps/Europe_BELGIUM.gif. The little yellow country is Belgium, lol :).

My first day at my new job went great. I was tired but I had a lot of fun. I actullay just graduated as a teacher in English, Dutch(= mother tongue) and history and as a teacher for children with special needs, to answer your question Culpie. I'm now working in a primary school as a kind of coordinator who helps the children with special needs. It's very varied work, and a lot of fun.

Post by: mayadeprei on June 02, 2007, 11:35:54 am

Hey,
I'm sorry you feel so miserable.
here maybe soem tips:
try to sleep enough. It's better to get a good night's sleep and study a litlle less then vice versa. It is proven that while you sleep you structure the things you have learned and you will remember more.

Maybe you can try to relax a bit. Drink a tea, have a cookie.

When you feel like you can't study everything, study those thinsg which are important for teh teachers. It's better that you know the main lines of the entire course than to know the details of just a little part.

And finally believe in yoruself! You'll manage, I'm sure of it. Good luck :-*

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Nutella Sister on June 02, 2007, 11:39:28 am

Thanks hon! I'm going to study the important things and if I was in the mood I'll study the detail and if not it's my nighty-night then ;D :)

BTW, are you going to the premiere of Harry Potter? :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on June 03, 2007, 06:28:21 pm

Hello Artanis and Vern!

Awww...poor, V! :'( Don't worry, hon. It will soon be over and I just KNOW you will do really well. :-* Your freedom is coming soon! :D

Now you may think this is a silly question...but after all your exams do you have time off (like a couple of months)? Lots of time I assume every country and state has school structured the same way as we do in American. Kinda silly, I know. I guess that comes from not being able to travel out your way. :-\ If you do have a break....just think how lovely it will be. :) And since I am asking questions...hee hee...is school structured in a similar way? By that I mean do you go Kindergarten (5 years old) to 8th grade (about 13-14 yrs old), then 9th - 12th (High School...ending around 17-18 yrs old) and then if you want to...we go to college for usually four more years....and some go longer if they are going to be doctors, lawyers and folks like that. As you can see, I am just a little question-asker today. :D

Not doing too much today (as it is Sunday). Went to Mass and had a nice leisurely breakfast with my family (or part of my family...mum, dad, sister). Then had a little nap (it is pretty warm out today...about 90F). Tonight I will be getting ready for work in the morning. Hard to believe how fast time goes. :P

Sorry to hear that your grandparents passed away, Artanis. :'( I hope you enjoyed your visit with your family. :-*

Belgium? How interesting! My sister has been recently talking about Belgium a lot. Actually, I have bumped into quite a few folks here that are from Belgium. It is fun to talk with people who live in different places...especially when you know nothing about it. It must be admitted that I was terrible at geography when I was a kid. :-[

My dad is fantastic with geography and everytime I ask him where a country is...he not only tells me where it is located, but also their relations to other countries and state and important events that took place there. :o I aspire to his depth of knowledge.

I decided that my lack of knowledge is awful! So I decided something needed to be done. Just recently I thought of a great idea. Why not pick a place off the map and study it? Then focus on studying their location, way of living, exports, imports and so on. Once feel familiar enough I will move on to the next place. 8) Since I am such a LOTR freak (loved the books and the movies), I started with New Zealand. Although far from mastering it I feel pretty familair with it now. I plan to move on to Austrialia (because it is only 350 miles northwest of NZ). :D My sister and I watched a video on Greece last night and loved it! However, Belgium is next on my list (because of my sister's interest and due to the folks I meet on the forum) and then Ireland (because my ancestors come over from there). So when I get to Belgium, you will have be prepared for my questions. ;D

Your job sounds wonderful! What a great undertaking! We so need great teachers all over the world. And those of you would work with the special needs children are extra special. :-* Sounds like you will be one busy lady. I hope you enjoy it.

:o My goodness! I certainly was wordy today! Now, it is your turn. How are things going for you two today?

Toodles for now,

Hey guys!

How are you?

Shayda, how did your exams go?

Culpie, how's you hon?

I'm doing great. The weather is so beautiful here. Sunny and warm! And I'm also officially not a student anymore, :o, the one things I didn't get yets is my diploma but that's an minor detail ;). I really like the job I'm doing now. The children are so sweet and full of life, they really make me happy. It's so great when you feel that you can actually learn them something! It's an awesome feeling.

On Saturday, it's my best friends bacholerette party. Should be fantastic. We have activities planned all day long. I'm her 'best woman' (that's not the correct word I guess :-\). During the day we're going to peddle on the local river in real viking boats 8). And at night we're having chinese dinner and afterwards we're going to dance 8). I hope it's gonna be fun!

On Sunday we have national elections here in Belgium, and in the afternoon our school is ginving it's annual party, should also be fun.

I have to leave you now, our new car has arrived :o

Howdy, Artanis! I am doing well. Almost finished with work for another week. My little nephews are coming over Monday to stay for two weeks. I am really looking forward to it. They are 14 months and 4 yrs old. The 4 yrs old is a total riot! And little Chris is just too cute for words.

Sounds like you have lots of fun planned! Paddling in real Viking boats....how cool! It is such a strange feeling to not be a student, isn't it? Been quite a few years for me...but I do remember that feeling. :D Pretty exciting!

My I expose my ignorance and ask how your elections are run there in Belgium? Do you vote privately like we do? Or is it more like Britian? It is a little embarrassing that I don't know more about world politics...but it isn't one of my favorite areas. ;) The party sounds fun. Do you do anything in particular for the party? Geez...I sure do ask a lot of questions, don't I? ;D It is wonderful that you are enjoying your new job. Teaching is a great field of work!

Poor Vernie! :-\ She needs a break from those pesty exams! Hang in there, kiddo. You will make it...just three more and you will be freeeeeee! ;D What happened to the kittens?

Off I must go!

Not too much going on at the moment. I spent Friday night at my sister's house...which was fun! We had dinner, chatted and watched cooking shows from the Food Network...I think it was called Good Eats with Alton Brown. He is pretty entertaining and makes everything look so easy. ;D

Pretty much spent all day cleaning my storeroom. When I started, you couldn't walk around very easily. But now, after 8 hrs of cleaning, hauling a bunch of garbage out, dusting, vacuuming and organizing....it looks pretty good in here. It is where my computer is...so I have been meaning to organize it for quite awhile. Now it looks like a storeroom/computer room. Ahhhhhhh...I am pretty satisfied with it for now. :D

The weather was too warm...but not cold either. My little ole flower garden is growing and lots of the flowers are starting to bloom. Fun!

Blah...a math exam! :-X How many more do you have to go?

Well, I have to go have tea with my mum...talk to ya later! :-*

O how cool, Maryd!!! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to go to Ireland, Wales and Scotland!!! And it sounds like you are really going to see a lot of it by tenting! How absolutely fun!

I currently have 8 nephews and 3 nieces and it really is quite fun! Gosh, if you siblings are 15 and 11 I guess you will have to wait a "leetle" bit longer for nephews and nieces. ;)

Well...I am not doing anything major this summer, but probably will get together with my family and children to do some camping in my state (it is pretty big and has some lovely spots). However, I will be going to Mexico with my company in the fall. Never been...and am really looking forward to it...especially since I don't have to pay. ;D

Vern - "potty" is slang for the toilet. ;D So we have an expression over here called a "potty mouth"....meaning a dirty mouth. "Potty mouth" is usually used in a joking and lighthearted manner to tease friends, coworkers or family who swear or cuss. ;) So basically...I am just teasing you. 8)

I am soooooo glad you finally got your MRI results! Goodness, they certainly made you wait long enough. :-\

O I am crushed that Vern didn't marry Sean in her dream! :'( :'( He is so sweet and a good actor - although he doesn't seem to get the publicity he deserves...but then I guess all Sean fans would feel that way. I am really looking forward to seeing The Final Season...and it looks like it has a distributor now. Wahoo! 8)

Elizabeth & Maryd, I am really looking forward to Mexico...it should be a blast! And since I have never been....it will be very educational too. :D

Vern, I expect to see that "Potty Mouth" on your siggie. :D It would really make me laugh! ;D It is a hysterical description.

My mom's bday party was quite fun and the weather cooperated. It was hot and dry. After everyone left, it started to rain. So the kiddies had lots of fun running around outside!

My oldest brother and his wife just bought a new camper. So they brought it over to show everyone. All the neices and nephews were pretty excited to see it.

Now we are all planning our Fourth of July party! It is going to be quite the celebration. ;)

How about everyone else? Now finals are all done whatcha up to?

You're lucky in the US that you have 4th July - there's nothing like that in NI!!
Right now, I'm off school for the summer - yay, no more school til September!!! - and I've been working in my mum's garden centre...sort of boring but at least I'm getting paid for it!!
Has Veronica really left for good?

In Holland we don't have 4th of July either... Holland isn't proud of her country!! Gosh I hat it... we've got nothing like 4th of July, thanksgiving... NOTHING!! But we do have 2 days of Christmas and 2 days of Easter though ::)

I've only got 5 days of school and then there's SUMMERHOLIDAY for me!! Thank goodness, I needed it!!

No Veronica didn't leave for good, she's just taking a break

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on June 27, 2007, 01:38:47 am

Hey there, Chickeepeas! :D Yes, it is quite fun to have the 4th of July celebration. We do have some rather nice holidays here in the States...but then I am a little bias. ;) 4th of July and Christmas are two of my favorites. You two really don't have any celebrations like that at all? Lots of folk think we are silly...but it is the anniversary of our independence which to most of us is a big deal. It is a big family and friends day. Normally, it is an all day affair...BBQ, swimming, baseball and other games, potlucks, music, watermelon, s'mores and then...fireworks once it is dark enough. ;D Have either one of you ever been to America on the 4th? If not, I really wish you have the opportunity too join in the fun some day. :) The small country towns are the best place to be at these times. Good country fun.

What are your favorite holidays in your areas?

It really is kind of funny how I assume everyone in the different countries has similar celebrations...not the same or even at the same time, of course, but something like it. Of course, it cost a bit of moolah to journey overseas...so I haven't been out of the country except Bermuda and Canada. Holland and NI really don't celebrate their founding?

Uh oh...vern is taking a break? Did anything happen? :'(

I hope you two are having a good day!!! Glad you started posting on the random ramblings thread. :D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on June 27, 2007, 04:20:37 am

For a lot of people in NI, the founding really isn't a thing to celebrate at all... ;) and we don't have a natinal celebration beacuse of course half count themselves as British and half as Irish...gets very confusing! I'd love to be in the States one year for the 4th, though! Halloween is big here - apparently we have the biggest fireworks display in the UK on 31st October, and everyone goes out to see them, and I love Christmas too, especially late night shopping when the lights are all on!

I've only been abroad once, to France a few years ago!

I'm glad this thread exists!! :D Great boredom buster!

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Misz_Mii on June 28, 2007, 11:18:19 am

Wow, Independence day sounds like so much fun!! I so totally wanna go to America once... maybe for a whole year or something... Would be sooooo nice!!

I looooove Christmas!! That is without a doubt my favourite holiday! Our country (Holland) isn't proud Of being Dutch!! We don't have anything we celebrate!! Every 4th of May though, we have 2 minutes of silence, because we remember the second world war and those who died. So we also remember the Americans and Jews and Germans and Dutch and everyone really. We think about the fact that we're free but that's all. There are no special activities on that day, just2 minutes of silence at 8 o'clock. It's not really a celebration, because celebration is happy and this isn't, at all!! Not even everyone participates!! There are so many people who just keep on driving/talking or something like that... it's annoying..

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on June 30, 2007, 02:30:52 am

Helloooooo Pam and Maryd! I hope you both do get a chance to come to America once. However, I sure understand the $$$ issue. This is one of the reasons I haven't been to Europe yet. :-\ Would totally love to go to Ireland, New Zealand, Wales and Italy. Maybe one day. :D

I can't remember the name of the thread, but I bumped into a group that were pretty anti-American couldn't figure out exactly why...but it boiled down to the way our "language isn't as pure as the British". I wasn't exactly sure what that meant...especially since our language is mix of multiple languages...and I guess we use a lot of slang. ::) And it is true...slang is totally annoying.

Now you are probably wondering why I bring this topic up in the random ramblings. Well, I got to thinking...most of the people I know are interested in other countries and their customs. Since you both don't live in the states I am curious about what perceptions you have about Americans. Do we seem very different from Europeans? Do you think that we are really like the media and Hollywood portray us? What do you think our best trait is as a country and what do you think is our worst?

;D Sorry to pepper you two with questions...but I am really curious. I hardly ever get the opportunity to "chat" with folks outside of the States - except Canadians or Mexicans....or those visiting from other countries on a rare occassion. So my little inquiring mind wants to knw :D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Misz_Mii on June 30, 2007, 01:29:47 pm

Well, I can see why they'd say American English isn't as pure as British English. American English is the type of English the pioneers brought to the US, who were like adventurers and all. They were little more rude than the people who stayed in England. I think that's why American English isn't as "pure" as British English.

Anyhow, over here in Holland people seem to be different than Americans. The media shows that the schools are way different and the social system with the money things are way different too. Also if you go to the McDonalds here, you don't even get half as much as ou would get in the US. That's what they say. Over here there are not so many poor people. The difference between poor and rich is not as big as it is in America, because of our social system. We need to give money to the government, and they give extra money to the "poor" people.

To me, America is great. I'd love to live in America, I don't know why. Probably because you see so many different styles of people, you don't have that here. On the other hand, on the schools you really need to be poplair (that's what the media shows?) and over here nobody is really populair. But American schools have proms and football and all, the pupils are one in the end. Here we don't have that, we are not one group.

I'd love to emigrate to the US, but my family doesn't want to move with me, which I understand, haha.

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on July 01, 2007, 05:37:31 am

This is a really interesting issue to raise!! I read a Bill Bryson book called 'Mother Tongue' which tackled the subject of American and English languages, and I wouldn't say American English was less pure, maybe just different!

I've never really thought about my own perception of America - I guess I would say freedom, because there's so much diversity over there. People from all over the world can go to the States and be treated equal, and thats a really great thing to say about your country.

I'm not particularly patriotic (not at all, really!) but I wonder what you all think of Northern Ireland?

Hi Shayda!!!! So nice to see you again! ;D Whatsup, chickee?

Maryd and Pam, Thanks so much for your responses! :-* It is true...we are a capitalist society...so our structure is very different to some. Most of us are not what you would call "popular". The media's version of us is a shallow and silly people only concerned witht he pursuit of money and power. However, most Americans are hardworking and honest. Have concern for righting injustice (one of the reasons we tend to get involved in wars, etc). We love our country, value our freedom and would give the shirts off our backs to anyone in need.

I don't know too much about Holland (I am embarrassed to say) and I think this is one of our failings. :-[ We tend to be very self-contained and independent. There is such variety in the states...we have deserts, ocean, mountains, tropics, volcanos, beautiful canyons, flat lands, fresh water, farms, swamps, wildlife and all sorts of variety...and all different cultures from Native American to Oriental so we sometime forget the world outside. :-\ Not intentionally...it just happens.

However, I love to learn about new places and things...so Pam what is your favorite thing about Holland? Maryd what about Ireland? What's your favorite thing? And Vernie....how about Iran? What is your favorite thing?

I am a bit partial to Ireland because my ancestors come from there. My great grandma - on both sides of the family - immigrated back in the years during and after the Potato Famine. My great grandma hated the English because she remembers watching the English soldiers riding their horses thru their fields destroying their crops and leaving them starving while laughing about it. If I am remembering correctly...they came from Cork - I will have to double check. ;)

Ireland is one of the places I would love to visit! I live in the country here in the states, so the research I have done centers around the country there too. I envision Ireland as rolling and green, basically friendly folks, hard working, loyal and fierce fighters if prodded. And --- this is stereotypical I think ---but I often think about fighting between the protestants and Catholics. Is the fighting really as bad as our media implies? Of course, it may be our media is known for distorting the facts...but this is where Mary can correct my misunderstandings. :D

Whew....I sure am wordy tonight! Sorry folks...I will shut up now. ;D Now it is your turn....tell all about your countries and what you love?

Yep, Ireland is rolling and green, or at least most of it! There isn;t as much industry here as in a lot of other countries, and we get a lot of rain...
Protestant and Catholic fighting - no, I don't think its just your media portraying it like that! Of course, since the peace process etc, its all improved hugely - something like 90% of people are completely happy here, accoridng to a new poll! But there have been some awful sectarian incidents in the past, we touched on it all in history last year, such as Bloody Sunday, which happened here in the early 70's. I'm sort of in a conflict - I was born in England, but have lived here half my life now because my mum was from here origianlly - even now people in NI don't look towards England with much favour! Hope that helps - boy, my fingers are sore with typing!

Aw don't worry, not many people know about Holland, cause we're just a small country in Europe... We're famous for our prime-minister, Jan Peter Balkenende (http://www.senternovem.nl/mmfiles/foto%20Balkenende_tcm24-118509.jpg), also known as Harry Potter (sorry Shayda, they just say he is ;)

My favorite thing about Holland... Hmm that's a hard one.. I'm not very chauvinistic, I don't love my country that much. It's boring out here, justice sucks, people who murder don't spend as much time in jail as people who commit fraud with money. That's so stupid...

Oh well, Holland isn't ALL bad... The weather sucks, it sure does, but the summers (okay, if the sun finally starts to shine ;) ) it's very nice. I like the fact you can say whatever you want, but I hate it that people get killed because of it. But I guess it's not just here, but it's an issue all over the world. I also like the fact that noone is allowed to keep a weapon, it makes me feel a little safer. I also like it that you've gotta be 18+ to drive a car, because in my opinion kids who are younger are more reckless and do crazy things in their cars.

Well there's not really one thing I love about Holland, which is prolly really bad... I think I do love it here, though I really wanna go to the US... it just attracts me... Holland isn't that bad, you've just gotta know where you wanna go. For example, we've got the best theme-parcs haha. We also have very nice bungalow-parcs, it's always nice there. And our zoo's are nice... Oh well, I dont know haha.

I am never that positive about Holland, but I am now changing a bit. I like it here, I just don't know why. When I think of the bad stuff, I can name alot, but when I think of the good things, I don't know any. But it isn't that bad here... And I think I need to change my opinion, because Holland isn't that boring... I just don't do anything fun haha We can go to clubs (we have to be 16 for most clubs!), see a movie, go bowling, etc etc. There's so much to do, but I just don't have the time...

I am from UK, but I don't really like it here, the cost of living is extremley expensive, and we cannot afford to buy a house which is why we are still renting nearly 6 years after moving out of our parents houses.

Marks mum lives in Tenerife, we often go on holidays there to see her and because we only pay for flights and spends. Mark sometimes says he wants to move there, but recently he has I think decided to stay here.

The UK is good in that you can travel anywhere in the world from here, I don't mind the weather I guess, other places can get too hot for me, I don't know if I could live in hot place, also my family and relatives live here.

Awww Shayda that sucks... *Huggles*

Elizabeth, since we got the Euro's a couple of years ago everything got more expensive too. But The pounds are much more expensive than our Euro... if we pay 30 euro, you'll pay like 20 pound... I am always surprised to hear that...

Oh Shayda!!! You poor thing! :-\ Don't feel too bad...that kind of stuff happens to me too. ;)

Hiya Pam, Maryd and Miss Sixty! Thanks bunches for sharing the info about your countries. I really love to hear how folks view their countries...it gives you a better idea of what the country is really like... ;D If there is one thing I have learned...don't listen to the media...they tend to spin things. ;D

It sounds like we all have similar feelings about what we like and don't like. I have to admit that sometimes in America our crimminals aren't punished quite right either. Like you said Pam, sometimes people get longer sentences for having an open beer in the car than those who have committed murder. ::) I guess that is a flaw of the justice system everywhere. ;) And I also think our politicians are corrupt and it really doesn't matter which party (Democrat or Republican)...but I suppose lots of folks feel this way.

However, on the bright side, I am always consoled but the normal everyday hard-working folks in our countries. They really seem to pull together when needed...and this is great! :D

Don't laugh...I am still perplexed by the whole Euro/ pound thing. :-[

Miss Sixty, welcome to the randon rambles! So nice to see another person pop in!!! ;D I normally post more often...but have been offline a bit lately....AND my notifications are working at the moment. :-\

Ok...I am once again long winded...hee hee!

Hello, Chickies! :D I know...I have been all wrapped up in all sorts of RL stuff over the last three weeks. :) Gosh...I think I have been missing in action for just about a month...or I guess you could say I was random in my postings. ;)

I am doing well. It is hotter than blazes out here! Whew! :-\ We have been in the high 90's - 100'sF for about a month. Very dry...and there are quite a few forest fires burning. The valley is full of smoke. (It blows in from the fires in Idaho, Utah, Washington and a few fires burning fairly close in Montana. It may sound strange, but this is quite normal for August in MT. Blah...can't wait until fire season is over. ::)We need rain desperately and I don't think there is any in sight. Sigh. :-\ Normally, it cools off in the evenings...but it sure hasn't lately. At 3am this morning it was 85F. Blah! It will be great when this heat wave breaks. Isn't it funny how one area (like Britian) is flooding and we are so dry the earth is cracking. Too bad we can't control the weather, eh? Then I would take some of Britian's rain and give them some of our sun. ::)

We had a major lightening storm last week. The strikes were so close that the static electricity from the bolts made the hairs on your air stand up. We were really afraid the house was going to be hit. I was pretty nervous. Lightening actually struck a tree 100 feet from the house and split it right down the middle, started 2 little fires and knocked out our well. :o Fortunately, the rain came down in buckets and extiguished them. However, others weren't so lucky. That storm sparked 8 forest fires in our area! Yikes! It was quite a scary storm.

Tomorrow (23rd) is my b-day, but my whole family came up for a celebration this evening. It was hot (about 105F), but everyone had a wonderful time. The kiddies certainly didn't mind the heat - which always amazes me. :D My sister hosted it at her new house. We had chicken, greek salad, ice tea, bread and then pound cake, fruit and lime sherbert. It was very tasty! ;) I love ladybugs and my little nephews and neice found a ladybug sponge holder. It is so cute and they were so excited about finding it that they greeted me with "Happy Birthday, Aunt Julie we got you a ladybug!" Very very precious! ;D

So my dears, how are things going with you? I sure hope your areas are not prone to any fires. It is scary to be smelling smoke, praying for rain and hoping the heat will break soon.

Thought you might like a look at this Shayda, its just the Potter Puppet Pals 'Trouble At Hogwarts', but if you watch til the bit where Voldemort kills Snape, pause it and look for a star-shaped flash of light. When you see it, click the star and it shows you a different feature!

Culpie, I can't imagine getting that hot...though I'm not too sure what the temperature is here, but I'm pretty definite its not that high! ;D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on July 31, 2007, 11:58:07 pm

Oh Shayda! I am sorry you don't have the book yet. :'( I know how much of a HP fan you are....hopefully it will reach you soon.

Hiya, Maryd - it is going to drop down to 50F this evening...so they say ::) Here's hoping they are right. There are soooo many forest fires burning in my state...a couple pretty close to my town. Sigh! Did I ever mention that I don't like fire season. :P The two big ones near me were started by lightening strikes. One has been burning since July 11th and is now up to 15,300 acres. :o So anytime it wants to rain is AOK by me. The smoke is something else...blah. Can't see across the valley. I don't think we are going to lose the smoke until December. Ugh! :-X

As far as the heat goes...yes it is hot, but we have very low humidity...so it probably doesn't feel as warm as Ireland at a lower temperature. However, 102F is hot especially when it doesn't cool much in the evenings. August is normally our hottest month and can get up to about 115F...but it usually doesn't last long. July was the hottest month for us on record. 8) Too offset all this heat...I like to think about how cold it gets in the winter. Our coldest month is usually January and we do get pretty chilly...like -40F to - 60F. Gosh...come to think of it...why in heaven's name to I like here? Hee hee! ;D

I would imagine Shayda know about heat too. I always assume it is hot like us in summer for her. Is it, Vernie!

:) Ah ha...I see HP fans! I always scandalize Shayda with my lack of interest. Hee hee! ;D Glad you all enjoyed the book.

Still smoking out here in 'tana. The fire to the east of us is slowly coming under control...burnt about 50,000 acres...not totally out yet...but under control. Now we have a two big ones to the west of us threatening 600 homes and they can't control it at the moment. :-\ Although it is about 115 miles from us...the smoke is horrible. *Hack hack* One is burning 10,000 acres and the other 10,850 acres. Might not seem like a lot compared to the other...but they both only started on Friday. Can't wait for rain and wind to clear the air. :-X

Elizabeth, you are going to Singapore? How fun is that! 90F would be easy for me! ;) Especially after this summer. ;D

Mary, oh boy...could you send some moisture our way? Ireland sounds so lovely at the moment! Of course, it is one of the places I want to visit someday....and trace some of my ancestors...Turners. :)

Work is keeping me really busy...as you can see. I haven't been online too much lately. My company transitioned me into another department last week...and I am loving it. Tons of work, lots to learn and a bunch of new people to meet.

Whatcha all up too these days...besides reading HP? ;D

I am sorry you are feeling bored and bad, Shayda :'( What's up? Any plans for the next couple of weeks? Do you start school anytime soon? Do you have any long term plans at the moment? Like what you plan to do after school?

I went horseback riding in the mountains on Saturday. It was awesome! Took my sister and three nephews. The ride took us up to 7,000 feet. The views were gorgeous...even though it was still a little smokey. ;D

The smoke really descended on us again today. We still have quite afew forest fires burning around us...and the smoke was horrible. Everyone has sore throats, eyes and plugged up sinuses. I am beginning to wonder if we will ever get rid of the smoke. Sigh. ::)

Hey there, Chickeepea!!! I missed ya! :-* So sorry that I have been missing in action lately. :'( Did I tell you that I transitioned into a new department at work on August 1st? Well, I did and I went from not having enough to do....to being really really REALLY busy. Whew! It is so hard to get out on time, then I need to get home and make dinner, do some chores and then -- if I have time -- catch up on my online buddies (A&F, Yahoo & LJ). Unfortunately, I can't always get online until the weekend. :'( So I have fallen WAAAAAYYYY behind. I still love my job even though I spend more time doing it! The work is fascinating and I am learning lots. I did update my Yahoo website this weekend...but that was about all I had time for...Isn't it amazing how things can get so darn busy? :o Sayyyyy...do you have a LJ account? If you do, I will friend ya. I tend to keep up with my Yahoo and LJ a little more often than my A&F...basically because my notifications don't work anymore. Sigh. So I have to check all the notifications manually...takes a little bit longer. ;)

So how are you, my dear? The last time I responded you were bored and sad. Are you better now? My neices and nephews will be starting school at the end of the month. At the moment, they are very excited about going back. How have you been feeling? Any more headaches? I hope not! :-*

I have had lots of visits from my family too. My sister and her four boys were out visiting. They are the ones I went horse backriding with a couple of weekends ago. On Saturday, my other sister and I took my little niece, Catie, out to the Painted Pot. You do ceramics there...and then in a week, you can go back and pick up your creation. ;D It is really fun...and a nice way to create your own plates, cups, and decorations. My mum, sister and I will be going back in December to make some Christmas decorations. Can't wait!

My mum turned 75 and my dad turned 73. My oldest sister turned 47, my oldest brother turned 40, one of my nephews turned 14, my little niece will turn 6 in Sept and my other niece will turn 12. So we have lots of family bdays in the summer and fall.

My sister, Beanie, and I will be going out to a little wine restaurant on Friday. It is a nice little place were you can listen to soft live jazz performers, sip yummy wine and eat some nice hors d'vours. Then I will spend the night at her house. We plan to visit, eat popcorn and watch a movie. Hopefully, Sunday will be a peaceful day.

Ok...I think this "ramble" is really long. So I better wrap it up. ;D So how is everyone doing?

Hey there, Wild Kiwi!!! I think Coke tastes MUCH better out of a glass bottle! ;D

Pam, psychology is very useful no matter what career you choose. The most difficult issue always involve dealing with people. So the more you know about the different types of personalities and the like...the better. Good luck to you! :)

How's it going, Mary? Don't be too concerned about not knowing what you want to do. I didn't really know until about 1 year ago and I am 36. ;) It was a family joke that Culpie "didn't know what she wanted to be when she grew up." ;D Some people know from grade school on and others (like me) go to school and take the first job they can to pay the bills. The experiences you have tend to shape and help you determine what you love and hate....and before you know it...you suddenly realize where you should be. It will come! ;)

In two more weeks, I am going to Mexico! Can't wait! 8)

Shayda, you got me chuckling! :D Drunk on Coke, eh?

We used to go visiting a friend of the family...back in the late 70's. He always had a refridgerator full of Coke in bottles...just for when the kids visited. Wonderful man!!! He always gave us bottles to drink out on the porch...so the neighbor must have chuckled to see 7 kids walking around with Coke bottles. I still grab those glass bottles whenever I can. How fun, Wild Kiwi ;) that you got your first glass bottle Coke! For some reason, I always thought it was an American thing. Silly me! :D

Mary, languages are great! I wish I had spent more time with them. You will probably find some really exciting jobs if you master multiple languages. I always thought being a translator would be neat!

You're kinda right, Shayda! Mostly people in Ireland speak English, but there is Irish as well, though not many people speak it as their first language / mother tongue any more. I started learning it at school when I was 11, so thats 5 years now, and I love it! :) I learn French too, hopefully taking up Japenese soon as well!

Mary,

Oooo...I would love to take Gaelic. Do the Irish really speak predominately English? Awww...that would be sad. You might loss part of your heritage. :'( Although English is my native tongue, I don't really like it. I love hearing people speak other languages. At the moment, my favorite is Italian....but I do like Celtic and Welsh. Can you tell I am a singer? Songs sung in Italian, Gaelic and Welsh sound so pretty. :D

Vernie, you are too funny about the flingish. Can I expose my ignorance? Is Farsi Arabic? Are there different "languages" within Arabic?

Dia daoibh, mo chairde!

Thats 'Hello, my friends' in Irish. You pronouce it 'jaya deeve, moh hard-ja'.

Pam - the way that the Dutch speak two different langauges is interesting. Irish is a form of Gaelic, and Scottish Gaelic is similar in places, though Welsh, I believe, is completely different.

Culpie - Irish has been fading for ages...since the English first invaded the country in about the 1100s or something, English has been Ireland's first language - everybody here speaks English as their main language. Irish has been in a decline for years, but I think now its gaining popularity. Out of 120 pupils in my school year, only 40 did Irish. This number dropped to just 20 after 3 years - now, in my 6th year, there's only 6 of us, which is pretty dreadful;. Though mind you, there's only 10 in my French class....languages are in a decline here.

There are places in the South (sorry, thats what us in the north call the Republic) that speak only Irish - they're called the Gaeltachta. I'll probably be going to stay there for a week at Easter. ;D

Dia daoibh, mo chairde! ;D Thanks so much, Mary! Very interesting facts too. I am very interested in Ireland because some of my relatives came over to America around the time of the Potato Famine. How sad the language is disappearing. :'( Is it a difficult language to learn? I myself feel English is pretty tough...mainly because it is a hodge-podge of all sorts of languages and there is an exception to every rule. ::)

Guess what? I will be leaving for Mexico on Tuesday! :D I am so excited! I only wish that I had learned Spanish before-hand. I feel a tad guilty going to another country not knowing how to speak the language. So I will have to learn a bit of it later to make up for it.

Irish isn't that difficult - or at least, I don't think so anymore. I guess it was hard at the beginning, but once you;ve got the basics, then its OK. Like, 'bh' togther give you a 'v' sounds, and 'bhf' (which I know looks pretty un-pronounce-able! :)) is pronouned 'w'.

Post by: Culpie on October 06, 2007, 12:59:43 am

Wow! You go, girl! Chinese seems like a challenge. :)

My trip to Mexico was quite fun! It was hot and humid. Since I am from a VERY dry section of the US...the humidity was a little tough to get used to. It was 90-100F with about 80-90% humidity. Very sticky! I hadn't sweat so much in a LONG time. :-\ But I couldn't believe how soft my skin was after returning home. Humidity must be great for skin. :)

So aside from being a tad sticky everyone had a great time. The resort was beautiful and had a great view of the ocean. The service was the best I have had since moving to MT, food was awesome and the pool was great.

My sister and I went for a 6 hrs tour of Cabo to get a good overview of the area. The people were very friendly and full of information. Naturally we did some shopping and visiting too. I wished I had tons of money to buy something from all of them. It always amuses me that some folks think Americans are all rich. :D Of course, maybe it is just that tourists seem rich in comparison. I had a hard time bargaining with them because I would estimate what I would pay in America and then just give them that amount. I guess I am not a bargain hunter, but they sure liked me. ;D A couple folks knocked $5 off my item...they were so nice! When you tour the area and see how the average Mexican lives, it makes you ashamed ever complaining about our trials and tribuations. They truly are poor with the exception of the areas where Hollywood stars and the likes buy homes. It made me a little sad to see some of their basic needs.

One of the highlights for me was actually talking to the folks...even though I don't know Spanish. :-[ It is a great way to learn though...being surrounded by it and wanting to speak the native language. Most folks laughed their fool heads off at our spanish attempts...but it was fun and they were being very good natured. We were horrible. :D

We toured a glass blowing factory and watched the workers create a glass fish. Very interesting and they were so good! I ended up buying a glass pitcher as a souvenier. It is lovely and functional! Then we had a real authentic Mexican lunch at a place nearby. Again the service and food was excellent and they were very nice to the whole group. Later we had a boat ride out to Lover's Beach, the Pelican refuge, Elbow Beach and the Arch. We saw tons of neat fish, pelicans and sea lions. We continued around the tip and headed into the Pacific a little ways. I was a little nervous because the waves got really big...but we did get back safely. ;)

We did lots of relaxing in the pool and by the pool. Ate breakfast on the patio watching the waves crash on the beach. It was great! They certainly keep the drinks readily available. I am not much of a drinker myself, so managed to really enjoy my vacation. No hangovers to spoil my fun. :P

Whelp...I think that is it for now. This post is HUGE!

How about everyone else? How are things going? Pam? Mary? Elizabeth? You have to catch me up with all your news. :D

Elizabeth, glad the job is going well! Liking what you do is so key to enjoying your work. Mary, glad to see that you are still enjoying Chinese! :)

I finally figured out why my notifications weren't working. It looks like I added it to the spam setting on my PC. The weird thing is that I checked it before and I didn't find the address listed in the spam addresses. :-\ Perhaps I just missed it. So here is hoping my notifications now will work....after gosh...how many months was it....5? ::)

I am anxiously awaiting the announcement of the A&F winner! Can't wait to see which design won!

My sister is celebrating her 46th bday tomorrow! We celebrated yesterday by going out for dinner and having brownie sundaes...but will celebrate againn on Monday. ;D We just can't celebrate enough.

Still loving my job and been putting in a bit of overtime. And, I finally started working out at a nearby club again. :D My time is so tight that working out at lunch is the only time to get it in. Since the club is only a block away...it is VERY convenient. Plus, I decided to hire a personal trainer to set up two rountines for me to follow for six weeks. It is worth the extra $$$. ;) She is going to give me the low down on the machines and give me some good pointers to help me tone up my stomach and other troublesome core areas. So am looking forward to it. My goal...20lbs by Christmas. 8) Just working out regularly again has me feeling pretty good. Amazing what a difference a little motion can make. ;)

The weather is cooling down these days. Fall is in full swing! I just rewatched the LOTR extra materials again. How I love that documentary...which reminds me...I must go get a copy of the Ringers. Anyone seen it?

So my fellow ramblers, anything new and exciting going on?

I have still to watch them all following on in the same day. ;)

Heh heh...we must scold Vernie (Shayda) and Pam for leaving us hanging. ;) My sister is coming over tonight for dinner and we are going to watch Hildago together. :D I know I just watched it last night, but Beanie (my sis) likes me to preview new movies and determine if she would like it. So I guess you could call me a movie critic. 8)

Are you doing anything for Halloween? I just pulled out my Halloween decorations out. Unfortunately, I will be out of town for Halloween managing and attending a training session for work. So I will miss my little neices and nephews coming over to trick or treat this year. :'( :'( :'(

Vernie!!! ;D Good to see ya! Unfortunately, I don't get online nearly as often as I wish. Like you...I am pretty busy. ;) Although it is mainly with work and projects at home.

Oooo...sounds like Elizabeth is going to be busy too! Don't worry, my dear. I will keep my crazy work schedule in perspective. Just finished running a three day training...whew! Another really busy week coming up...but then I should have a little break. Our accountants will start getting too busy for training soon. ;D The official tax season starts Jan. 1st.

PAM!!! :o You are here too! Good to see you! How are you doing?

How is everyone? I haven't been here in such a long time....

Hope you all had a good Halloween. We went out and saw the fireworks and stuff, really good display. I didn't bothe dressing up though - it came to Halloween itself and I still had no idea what to be, so I just left it. If anybody asked, I was a nudist on strike. ;D

Our local shopping centre has its Christmas tree up already! I never really get into the Christmas spirit until about 2 weeks before Christmas though! What about everyone else?

Must go!

Some of our local shops also have Chrismas decorations up. I like it, I love Christmas!

For me it's also been a long time since I last was online! It's because I'm in the middle of big tests right now. Today I had my first too, Maths and some weird subject I don't know the name of. They went all right, I guess, I could answer the question properly, I hope :P

Today I've got to study for tomorrow's History and Management & Organization, which is something like economics... it's about morgages and all.. very stupid haha :P and Friday I've got to write an English letter and make a test about classical culture, about the philosophy in ancient Greece. So, wish me luck everybody!! :D

Elizabeth, we do seem to keep missing each other, don't we? I wish you were on here for a nice long chat....I just seem to keep running out of time these days.

We had a massive powercut this morning. One of the downfalls of Winter, I guess.

What ho, my lovelies! How are thing going? We are preparing for Thanksgiving this Thursday...so I decided to pop in today. There just won't be any time later this week. My whole family (approx. 22 people) will be converging on my brother and sister-in-law's house for Thanksgiving. :D

They are doing the turkey and the rest of us are bringing the other "essentials" for the feast: veggies, mashed potatoes, breads, stuffing, home-made pies and all sorts of good things. I have been assigned a dessert and veggies....so I will be making Molasses Cookies and bringing Butternut Squash and stuffed celery. I hope the squash is good...it kinda depends on growning conditions. So on Wednesday evening I will be peeling and chopping it up.

I love Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don't know how it is in the BIG cities...but it is such a great family time! The huge sit-down dinner where we all get to visit and chat, home cooking, taking walks to burn off some calories and watching the children have so much fun playing. Oh boy oh boy, I can hardly wait!

For those of you not living in America....are you getting ready for the Christmas season? When is the earliest you have put up Christmas decorations? Now be honest...hee hee! ;D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on November 19, 2007, 02:19:16 am

You make me wish I lived in America Culpie Thanksgiving sounds so cool and fun.

We put our xmas decorations up beginning of december so get into the christmas spirit early, which isn't a bad thing ;)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on November 20, 2007, 12:00:06 am

Hi Elizabeth! :D I almost wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and then I remembered that it is an American thing. Hee hee! Gosh...what a dope I am sometimes. ;D Canandians have a Thanksgiving too at a different time....so I think my brain just gets confused.

I totally LOVE Christmas and it is one holiday we can share all over the world. ;) There is something special about the Christmas that really brings out a goodness in everyone...even those that aren't religious. The colors, the sounds, music, the food, the preparation and the visits. Sigh! Wish everyone could get along as well as they do during this season. :-\ Ah well...maybe some day.

I will be putting up my Christmas things pretty soon after Thanksgiving. A little early...but I find with the crazy schedule I have...it lets me enjoy them a little longer. Besides I leave them up until the feast of Little Christmas. I hate taking them down.

Whelp...gotta dash! I probably won't get a chance to post until after Thanksgiving. Toodles!

Hey Culpie!!

What is 'little christmas'?

We are considering going on a working holiday to new zealand by latest 2009, as you have to apply for visas between 18 and 30, (I am 30)!!

I sort of came around to the idea slowly as at first I had started my new job of which I am nearing the end of my probation, if they keep me on we will go in 2009 if not will go earlier..

What do you think of the idea? :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on November 21, 2007, 03:11:30 pm

Hi all!

culpie, hope you had a good Thanksgiving! I do love Christmas, though we don't put up our decorations til about the 18th or 19th of December. One of my favourite things about Christmas is our schoo, carol service - its about the only time we're altogether as a school. I love carols. The whole spirit of Christmas is just lovely - all the family time, relaxing, old films on TV, sweets, oranges.....

Elizabeth, a working holiday in NZ sounds amazing! It would be nice to go back there for you! :)

Must go, hope to speak to everyone soon!

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on November 22, 2007, 02:33:00 am

Hey mary. Yes I think it would do us both good, I just worry about what we gonna do on our return to the UK, cos we wouldn't have anywhere to stay or any job. ::)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on November 26, 2007, 10:43:05 pm

Hiya Mary, Little Christmas is when the three kings visited the Holy Family...traditionally celebrated the first week of January...also called the Epiphany. When we were little children, we used to set up our stable set with the kings away from it...then move them closer each day until they "arrived". ;D

Ooo...the working in New Zealand would be really neat! I think I would do it if I had the opportunity. It seems to be one of those adventures that you would enjoy looking back on or wish you had done it if you didn't. Would finding a place to live and job be really that difficult when you got back to the UK? I really am ignorant of job and housing situations there.

Hi Mary! Yes, Thanksgiving was great! Lots of fun, food and festivities! Unfortunately, my whole family came down with stomach and intestinal flu on Saturday. One of my brother's family had just gotten over it...so within 1 day the rest of us were pretty sick. Ugh! But all on the mend now thank goodness. I am with you on your love of Christmas...all those things are great!

Gotta dash! I hope you two are well! :D

Elizabeth - good luck, hope it all works out for you. A working holiday might be just what you need.

Culpie - glad you had a good Thanksgiving - but what a shame about the flu!

Oh, Epiphany....thats always the day we go back to school. :P I've got an exam right after Christmas too, so lots of revising to be done...oh well.

This sounds like a perfect time for you and Mark to go, Elizabeth. How exciting! I would love to have done something like this, but didn't get the opportunity. And now...well, I will be in the States for a long time now. ;) Don't forget to keep us posted.

Hiya, Mary! Yes, the stomach flu was definitely no fun. Thank goodness it lasts only 24 hrs. I start working out again tomorrow. I found that I was still a little weak last week.

Hi Vernie!!!! It is so nice to see ya here. How are you doing? :D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on December 04, 2007, 12:03:45 am

Oooo...you are right. I forgot about the difference in the season. :D Visas and passports...ugh! I went through that process last February preparing for my trip to Cabo. ::) It is a royal pain. Of course, it was the first time I had one...we just didn't need them to visit Canada, Bermuda and Mexico before...sigh.

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!

Yes, well apparently the best time to travel is after January if we go in march it will be autumn ::)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on December 10, 2007, 12:28:32 am

Too funny! I am sure it will be wonderful anyway. ;) And really fun to have someone to go with as well.

My 12 yr old niece takes ballet and her group's Nutcracker performance was Saturday night. She was a soldier, Russian and bell this year. She did a nice job. In the next couple of weeks, her instructor will be deciding which girls in her age group can graduate to point....she is hoping to be one of them. Although I am not much of a ballet person, the group did a nice job and it is always fun to see the youngest members perform. ;D

Getting ready for another busy week. Lots going on this week at work and a few Christmas parties are on the schedule. Plus, I am getting my toes done on Friday. ;D Ok...I know it isn't an essential thing, but it is so fun to do once in awhile. Plus, my sister-in-law will be doing it. Can't wait to see what we decide on for decoration...it will be Christmas for sure. ;)

Any fun stuff on your schedule for this week?

Post by: maryd on December 11, 2007, 03:52:33 pm

Good luck with the Visas Elizabeth! A working holiday in NZ sounds amazing!

Culpie - well done to your niece for doing such a good performance, I've always wanted to be able to dance but I get the feeling I'm a 2-left-feet kinda girl! Hope your niece graduates to point!
Have fun at the Christmas parties! I finally got most of my shopping done, only a few small things left to get now! If it wasn't for school I could almost relax! :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!

Culpie I used to do ballet when I was 4 till 11 but didn't like practise so quit, did quite well though. Teachers said I was good. ::)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on December 23, 2007, 01:32:53 am

We are actually watching to see how much she likes it too. She was just approved to go on point and now has her first pair of point shoes. Personally, I don't think she will continue with it after going on point. She is an atheletic girl who plays loves softball and volleyball. Something tells me she just won't last long in ballet.

How neat that you were in ballet too. Ever thought about starting it up again?

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on December 23, 2007, 05:15:35 am

No unfortunately not, god it make me laugh if I tried it now it was fun when I was younger but not now ;)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on December 23, 2007, 01:35:39 pm

I tell ya those older girls make it look easy, but despite the fact that I am too "solid" to be graceful....I wouldn't be able to do point. :-\ Although I have to admit that ballet was never one of my "things"...way too much of a tom-boy. ;D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on December 27, 2007, 01:41:45 pm

I've got 2 left feet...doesn't bother me anyway. :D

Elizabeth, ballet sounds like fun! I would have loved to learn something like that when I was little. I always wanted to learn an instrument - a proper one, the only thing I could ever play was a tin whistle. ;D Are either of you musical?

Hope you both had lovely Christmases anyway, and best wishes for the new year!

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on December 27, 2007, 05:39:17 pm

Hey mary had a fab christmas thanks sweetie :-*

You could say I was musical I used to play the piano and violin but gave up as too much practice got up to grade 4 in piano, didn't do violin for very long. ;)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on January 05, 2008, 01:17:54 am

Christmas and New Years were great, Mary! I hope yours was just as fun.

Hmmm...don't know if you would call me musical, but I played the flute for years....and still sing in choir. Love music and singing!!!

Tin whistle? How cool! One of my college buddies played the tin whistle with a Irish group at school. It sounded very neat! They were all American's with a strong Irish heritage...basically meaning that their grandparents immigrated from Ireland to America. (Last names of Murhpy, McGrath and O'connell) ;D

Good for you, Vernie!!! (I can't quite stop calling you Vern) :D So glad he is back in your life again! How are you and what have you been up to these days? I haven't "bumped" into you on my normal threads.

Hi Mary! I am doing well...very busy...but well. This week I am working on a project interviewing about 20+ employees. My company was contracted to collect information on the work environment for a particular company. So we are interviewing their entire staff. My first one is at 7:55 am tomorrow. It will be a week packed with meetings & information. Should be quite fun!

Two weeks ago my firm conducted their 2nd new hire training and we had 27 attendees. Everything went well and everyone found the training and networking useful! So another training organized and successfully pulled off. 8) The next one will be in June 2008. The hotel has been reserved and we are working on the curriculum now.

In the meantime, tax season is in full swing for us. This means lots of overtime and work until the deadline of April 15th. Makes me sleepy just thinking about it. ;)

My sister and her three sons were up visiting over the weekend. They arrived on Thursday night and just left today after church and breakfast. And I finally took my Christmas tree down yesterday. ::) Yes, I know I am REALLY late doing it. :-[ It just wasn't a priority until my family and friends started harassing me about it. ;D

How are things going with you? Anything coming up in the next month for you?

Whew! I am surfacing my my incredibly busy two weeks. :-\ When all is said an done we did 50 interviews. Substantially more than we planned. The turnout was fantastic. The entire staff wanted to participate - which is great! We finished the interviews yesterday and I started to compile the summary. Needless-to-say I am a bit sleepy at the moment. *YAAAAWN*

How's was your trip to Norway, Mary? Sounds like fun.

HEY SHAYDA! Don't forget to keep me posted on your MRI results. Hopefully everything will be a.o.k! ;D I had my last MRI last month and was given a clean bill of health - thank goodness! They sure know how to scare a person, eh? ;) Dang those things are expensive aren't they? >:( Of course, I have insurance and only have to pay $500 (my deductible), but still. They billed my insurance company almost $3,000.00 and then the insurance company paid about $2000.00. Ah well...it is a small price to pay for good health care. :D Of course, I don't know how medical costs work for you. But I am pretty happy with the level of care you get here in the States.

Hi Liz! Are you just about ready for you big adventure? I think it is way to neat and wish I was in the position to do it myself. How are things going?

Shayda, good luck with your MRI scan, hope it all goes well for you.

Elizabeth, thanks for the link to the site, I'll definately check up if you're going to be keeping a blog!

Yahoo...Mary is back! I did see your post on the holiday thread, Mary. It is great that you had such a good time! ;D What was the weather like?

You are a brave soul and adventuress to consider going to NZ alone. :) I am such a group person especially when going so far away from home. Of course, New Zealand is a LOOOONGGG way from MT. ;D

Elizabeth - I will check your website out too. It will be fun to see what adventures the both of you embark on. Of course, I do hope you will pop in here from time to time too. It just won't be the same without "bumping" into you on A&F. :-\

Slowing down I look around and I am so amazed
I think about the little things that make life great
I wouldn't change a thing about it

This moment is perfect, please don't go away, I need you now

Would you believe I have been sick since my dad died? Good grief...I have never had such a weird cold. It started, stopped, mutated into a different cold and came back, went away and then mutated again and came back. It is unbelievable. :P

How are you two doing?

Post by: maryd on March 30, 2008, 06:23:27 am

Good luck with the cold Culpie, and I hope you're OK after your dad's passing.

I myself have developed a cough, caught it off one of the girls I was staying with last week at the Irish revision course. Plus I'm really tired because we did an all-nighter on Friday night and I'm not caught up yet. :P

Boy, I haven't pulled an all-nighter in a very LONG time. They used to be quite fun. :) How's the cough, Mary?

The weather can't make up its mind which way to go. Warm one minute and then snowing the next. Certainly keeps us on our toes. Work is VERY busy and I bumped into one of my old college cronies "online". What a hoot!

Oh boy...how exciting, Liz! Nothing too big on the radar for me. I have a major training in June to get together. In July my whole family is getting together for a reunion. We are all going camping at the Yellowstone National Park. It will be great! The nieces and nephews are as excited as the adults. We all think it will be strange without dad, but know he will be with us in spirit.

My cousin and Aunt are planning a trip to Ireland and England in September. They have just started planning and are not sure where to go. Mary, do you have any suggestions? They don't want to go with a group, but aren't sure where it would be best to go.

I started spring cleaning this weekend. Gosh, I can't believe how much stuff I have! ::) It is time to clean it all out. Already took one big load to Good Sams (a thift store that is really good to the needy). It will be interesting to see how many trips I make this summer. But come hell or high water I intend to be organized and clean by the fall. ;D

Hey! Elizabeth, it really has flown by, hasn't it, from when you said you were going to NZ! I can't believe you're actually going!

Culpie, the camping sounds like great fun! I love camping holidays - but I hope the weather holds for you!

If your cousin and aunt like scenery and beaches and things, you can't beat the West Coast of Ireland. :) I've been to Galway, Clare and Kerry a couple of times - there are lovely mountains and walks around too.

Thanks for the suggestions, Mary! I passed them along to my cousin and aunt. I just know they are going to have a great trip! :)

Whoa...May 16th is rapidly approaching, Liz! I can't believe it is so close. Only a month left of work...how are you going to stand it? ;) Are you guys nervous? It would be strange to live in a hostel, but then again I never have so maybe it isn't exactly as I picture. In fact, we don't have them here in the states.

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on April 15, 2008, 01:48:10 am

Hey Culpie we are not nervous more excited, aout living in hostels that willcertainly be different the first one we want to stay in for 2 months has a room with a private bathroom getting mark to try to book that one ::)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on April 15, 2008, 11:34:28 pm

Ooooo....a private bath! Now that would be great! Just to show my ignorance, how long can you stay in a hostel? Indefinitely or is there a time limit. Here in the states if we temporarily relocate, we do the apartment thing. Unless we have relatives or friends who would have space. :D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on April 16, 2008, 01:39:41 am

As long as you want in long term hostels in short term ones up to a month, I think..not much of an expert myself, we want to stay in urban rooms for couple of monthes though more shared house than hostel. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostel here you go explains all

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on April 18, 2008, 10:48:29 pm

Now why didn't I think to check wikipedia? ::) Thanks, Liz! I am now "well educated" on what hostels are...I feel so smart now. 8) I had to chuckle with their reference to noise and odors being an issue. Hee hee!

It would have been kinda fun to explore places when I was a teen. Unfortunately, I was too busy working my fool head off saving for college every summer from freshman in high school (age 15) through my junior year of college (age 20). Then it was working like crazy to pay of the remainder in about a year or so :P

It was up to 60F today (lovely weather), but the forecasters say there is a winter storm warning out for this weekend. :o They are forcasting 2 feet of snow in the mountains and 6-12 inches of snow in the plains. Holy Cow....just when I was ready for spring! :-\ Ah well...gotta luv spring in Montana! ::)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on April 19, 2008, 03:26:35 am

I love the snow dont get much of it over here at least not where I live.

And always comes at wrong time of year was better at Christmas I think.

Its windy over here at the moment! :o

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on April 19, 2008, 04:05:23 pm

We live about 5000 feet above sea level and the mountain stretch up from there....so the makes for some interesting storms. The Rocky Mountains tend to funnel the weather south or north of us....leaving our area relatively dry. However, when the winds are from the NNW the precipitation gets interesting. :)

We have....about an 1 or 2 and seems to be in a lull. However, consulting the radar there is another HUGE band coming our way. Looks like they were right about the snow. ;D

Hold on to your hat! It was REALLY windy here last night.

Just reading the name Singapore makes me think of exotic location. Guess that must be because it seems sooooo far away from the States. :D

I forgot to ask, but how does getting a job work when you are out in NZ. Do you have the job before going? You may have told me before...but my memory is just horrible sometimes. :-\

Singapore is a bueatiful city about 4 million live there but it doesnt seem that busy and it is so green. :)

We will look for work once we arrive actually I didnt get my ird number so I have to apply for that when we arrive or you ger taxed up to 5o% it only takes 8-10 days to arrive so isn't too bad. Mark has his though.

:o 50% Whoa!!!! And I thought my taxes were bad! :-\ I guess you won't forget to do that, eh? ;) All in all it sounds really exciting. Wonder what kind of adventures are waiting right around the corner for you guys. :)

My sister and I have often thought about making a trip to NZ. It is just so far away. She met some really nice Kiwis in California at a training and they said we should come out and visit. They promised to show us around. Beanie really like them alot.

Maybe one of these days. I think we Americans are workaholics. ;D

Even though I haven't been online since just before you two left....I have been thinking about ya. :) I gotta go check out your website. Did you get your ird or are you still settling in?

Hi Raquel! I don't think I have "met" ya officially yet, but welcome. This thread used to be a bit more active than it is now. I don't know what I will do with Liz and Shayda popping in. Of course, my posts aren't as regular as they used to be either. :-[ But I will try. :D

Elizabeth, I must go and read your blog again! I read it about a week ago I think, and it looked like you were having a great time! :)

Culpie,. I read about your trip on the Holiday thread, sounds really good!

I'm heading off myself next wednesday, 2 weeks in Donegal. Oh the fun. ::)

Post by: Culpie on June 30, 2008, 10:42:12 pm

Hi Liz, I will be popping in and seeing if I can live a message. :D I am doing good...still miss my little ole dad, but that is to be expected when we lose a loved one.

Work is incredibly busy, but I love it! Can't believe it took me so long to find my niche. To think that I was nervous about switching careers a year and a half ago (at 35). It was the best move I ever made!

We celebrated my mum's 76th bday on the 21st and had a nice family BBQ. The family is now gearing up for my brother and sister-in-law's arrive on Thursday evening. Can't wait for the 4th of July...it is always a day of fun! Then in another week we are off to Yellowstone National Park....about a 2 - 3 hour drive from here. We are going to camp for the week. How fun! So basically lots of birthdays, activity and general "stuff" going on. ;D

How about you? Are you still enjoying NZ? It would be so neat to do what you and Mark are doing! How's the weather?

Hi Mary!!! Sounds like you are doing well! You and I must be leaving for vacation at the same time. Have a blast in Donegal!

Yahoo! So glad to hear it, Liz! I can just imagine the scenery on those clear days. One of these days I am "gonna git me thar". :D So glad you are popping in from time to time to check up on us.

We had a pretty exciting thunderstorm last night....lots and lots of rain. Today was beautiful...sunny, clear and a lot cooler. Hopefully, the rain will hold off for Friday. It is pretty hard to watch fireworks and have a BBQ when the rain is pouring down.

Bye for now!

Super-duper! ;D The sun is shining, my little brother and his wife are in town and it is a sleepy quiet Sunday!

Best of all I have tomorrow off too! The end of my vacation. Part of me is saying "boo hoo", but the other part knows that after a week off one must return to work. ;) I will probably spend all of Tuesday reading email and answering voicemail. Ugh! Ah well...it was worth it.

Liz, so glad the bank situation is getting resolved.

hoy boy...the random ramblings has peetered out a bit. :'( Shayda!!! You are shirking on your responsibilities. ;D You and I just aren't online like we used to be. :o I think we are morphing into some of "those" members who suddenly disappear never to be heard of again. We must resist! ;D I know...I know...real life just has a way of pulling us away from our online buddies. ;)

So in an effort to ressurrect our ramblings ----- Soooooo...how are things in general, hon? Have you picked up any new hobbies? How's the uni going? I know you mentioned a few health difficulites...are they getting any better?

Liz and Mary...how about you two? Liz appears to be having a great time in NZ (love the blog and pics) and Mary just got back from a trip to Poland/Berlin. So how are things with you both? Anything new and exciting....or just plain new? :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on October 13, 2008, 11:49:20 pm

What's it like in the UK? I honestly don't have a clue.

Hey...here is a really random question. What is the traditional shape of scones in England? Round or triangles? What do you consider the most English tea?

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on October 13, 2008, 11:53:43 pm

It is cold and wet where we live mostly and very busy. Elsewhere is ok if you get out of the cities ::)

Scones are usually round, lol. That's a tough one erm, I would say Earl Grey :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on October 14, 2008, 12:06:13 am

I love Earl Grey....and only discovered it about 6 months ago. Isn't that funny? :D Ahhhh...us silly Americans. ;D

Our scones are triangles and I was wondering what influenced the shape. Guess it wasn't from our English roots. ;D I wonder if scones are triangles in France. I just made some this weekend and think I will try them again round. It seems like they might be easier to cut, hold and add butter and jam. 8)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on October 14, 2008, 12:08:31 am

I guessed at EG but I may be wrong. What a co-incidence ::)

I cant make scones, we made some choc muffins for our housemates back in Christchurch they were ok :D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on October 14, 2008, 03:18:48 pm

Triangle scones? That's just too strange! Are your scones the same as ours - I'm guessing they are, since you butter and jam them as well. :) Hope everyone is well anyway. :-*

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on October 16, 2008, 12:06:29 am

Ooo...Mary! Just the girl I wanted to talk to. ;D I am trying to figure out where our triangle shaped scones come from...we always make them this way in America. I got my British answer from Liz and was going to ask you what shape they are in Ireland. Now I know...round. ;) I wonder if it was influence from the French? Of course, I might be overlooking the obvious...it could be the American scone. ;D *Culpie will need to research a little further because inquiring minds wanna know*

Yes, they are the same. We eat them with butter and jam, but I am not sure everyone over here does it this way. What I really love is to make raspberry butter and put it on it. Yummy! Really the same thing as jam and butter...just whipped together.

Drat! Now I made myself hungry. ::)

Do you have treacle scones in America? I love treacle scones - they're just normal scones but in the mixture you add treacle. :)

Never heard of treacle scones. Have you guys heard of potato cakes, I love them :)

What do you call a potato cake? We have potato bread....maybe it's the same thing? Or is a hash brown?

Post by: Culpie on October 17, 2008, 09:27:39 pm

Oooo...treacle scones sounds lovely! My Irish great gramma used to make them...but I never had them. How much molasses do you put in the scone mixture? Can you still add things like raisens or fruit to scone or do you just make the scone mixture and add the molasses? Better yet...do you have a receipe you wouldn't mind sharing? I would love to try them! :)

I have heard of potato cakes, Liz...but I have never had them. How do you make them?

Can you tell I am in a baking mood these days? ;D

Good for you, Culpie - home-made stuff is always nicer than shop-bought. :)

I have no idea about the recipe for treacle scones, sorry - but you might find one on the net somewhere? They really are lovely. :)

You bet you did, Shayda! ;) You & I were causing problems in the "Meet the Newbies" section. Bad girl! ;D Then suddenly you abandoned me...sniff sniff. :'(

Fortuantely, Mary & Liz have been keeping me company. :)

Oooo...I just exposed my nationality by thinking the treacle is molasses. :o While searching for a recipe I found a really good explanation of the treacle tart...it is made with treacle - golden syrup - which is more like honey than our molasses. Silly me! :-[ We can get it online or just substitute the treacle for honey to achieve the same effect.

I did find a recipe online - the filing is made out of lemon zest, lemon juice, ground ginger, golden syrup (or honey for US), and rolled oats. Yummy! :D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on October 19, 2008, 04:52:37 pm

Yum, sounds gorg, we say honey too not golden syrup. You making some then?

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on October 19, 2008, 05:31:50 pm

Yes, I am definitely going to try it out. It sounds really tasty. It is always fun to try something new...of course you do risk it coming out wrong...which happens to me frequently. ;) However, I have to put it off for about a week or so.

Promised my mum that I would make her lemon bars next weekend. Then I will be really busy with trainings at work (we have 4 trainings going on the same week) and there is a lot of prep work to be done. However, after all that hype and rush I am going to experiment with the treacle tart.

Is honey and treacle the exact same thing? ???

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on October 19, 2008, 08:26:22 pm

Cool. No Treacle not the same as honey, I guess I misunderstood you, sorry. Treacle is that what you mean? Not honey you put on toast. ::)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on October 19, 2008, 09:46:43 pm

O I see. As you can see I am trying to find something to compare it with out here in the States. :D When I reread the recipe it did say that if you can't get treacle in the States we could use honey instead. So my mind automatically said "Cool...treacle and honey are the same thing". ::) Silly girl that I am. Sorry that I was confusing you. ;D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on October 21, 2008, 04:09:03 pm

Honey is what you get from bees. :) Golden syrup is a lot thicker and darker in colour - I think a bit like maple syrup in the US, but with a slightly different flavour? Treacle is darker than both.

I love treacle tart - we have that here too. Yum! And Culpie, those lemon bars sound lovely!

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on October 25, 2008, 07:00:36 pm

Thanks for the additional information on the treacle. :-* I will get this all sorted out soon. :D

My mum loves lemon. So I promised to make her some lemon bars this weekend. I am actually in the process as I type. Just waiting about 1 hour for my butter to soften. :) This recipe is really easy and I got it from Food Network's Barefoot Contessa - Ina Garten. She has some great recipes and tips for entertaining. They are really handy...at least for me. :D

It was beautiful outside today! So I spent the morning and early afternoon winterizing my patio, hauling wood and cleaning out the garage. Now I have switched gears (moved inside) and am baking and cleaning my bathroom and storage room. :P

So what is everyone up to this weekend?

Well yesterday weather was crap so didnt do much really..today was market day so went there bought some rowan jelly(jam) and now just relaxing. weather was sunny now cloudy :P

Hope everyone is happy :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on October 25, 2008, 10:51:38 pm

Rowan jam sounds tasty! I haven't had any...don't actually think Rowan trees grow out our way. Are they tart or sweet? They sure look pretty (only seen pictures of them).

Ugh...cloudy weather really does bring ya down doesn't it? Today the sun was out for the first time in about a week...and it really made me feel spunky and cheery. ;)

Next Saturday I need to go to our Farmer's Market to see if I can get some squash. It should be ready now and I really like home grown squash. Yummmm!

Did you see anything else at the market that was tempting...aside from the puppies, of course. ;D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!

Heh heh...I guess it is a little early for a huge market. ;) Silly me!

I just took my lemon bars out of the oven and I think they are done...but it is hard to tell for sure. Guess that is my inexperience talking. Ah well...tomorrow I will find out. :D If they flop we all can have a good laugh about it. ::)

All this chatting about lemon bars is making me hungry. :)

I've never had rowan jam either....my favourite jam is damson. My granny used to make that, it was lovely. :)

Wow, sunny weather? We've had gales and torrential rain here! Looking a bit brighter today though. :)

Yay, I'm off school all next week, we get a holiday for halloween. Is anyone doing anything special for the 31st?

Hi Ladies! Glad the jam was a success, Liz! :)

We don't get time off for Halloween, but my firm is going to have a Halloween party for the employee's children and families. It is quite fun. The ISS (techy guys) are converting their section into a haunted house (no too scary for the kiddies). The kids come and trick or treat through our 3 floors and then come to the lunchroom for snacks and all sorts of Halloween fun, ie bobbing for apples, etc. Everyone seems to have a great time. My little niece and nephews are coming this year. ;D

Anyone else doing anything fun?

Hey Culpie! Your plans for Halloween sound so much fun! Wish I could come, lol - I'm a big kid at heart. :) This year we're doing Halloween activities with my 5 year old cousin - baking 'spider biscuits' (whatever they turn out to be), making his costume and bobbing for apples.

Elizabeth - good luck for your interviews! I hope you get one of the jobs. :) I hate rice pudding, lol. :P

Mary, you would be welcome any time. ;D We are all big kids at work. Sounds like your Halloween will be quite fun too! Spider biscuts? Can't wait to hear what they were like...hee hee!

Good luck on the interview, Liz! It would be so neat if you ended up working at the LOTR store. :D How neat if you guys would get to stay in NZ. :)

Queenstown sounds great! The pictures I have seen of the area are pretty too. You will have to give us all the nitty gritty details of the trip. ;)

Culpie - The spider biscuits are basically just biscuits with a spider done in icing on them. Needless to say, my cousin loved them. :P Have fun at your work! :)

Elizabeth - It's strange, there's not actually anything good on here on TV on Halloween. Mind you, we won't be home anyway, we'll be out seeing the fireworks.
Plus I'm scared of horror films, can't stand them!

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on October 31, 2008, 06:22:21 am

Sorry, can't stand'em! The last one I saw was 'The Omen' (the remake) in the cinema about 3 years ago....freaked me out. Before that was The Amityville Horror, got nightmares off that one. Give me a comedy or chick flick any day! What's your favourite horror film then Elizabeth?

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on October 31, 2008, 06:27:21 am

The original Omen is better! I like too many horror films to chose one. My fave character would be Michael Myers :o

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on November 08, 2008, 03:35:19 pm

Halloween was fun, folks! The kiddies all seemed to have a good time. The spider biscuts sound totally cute! I bet my nieces and nephews would love them. :)

Ack...I don't like horror movies either....I find life and the world scary enough without them. ;D Now that isn't to say that I don't like suspense. Indeedy I do...just don't like blood, guts or torture. ;)

My week full of training went well. Everyone enjoyed subjects and the chance to network. Unfortunately, I expended too much energy preparing for the event and caught a yucky cold. :'( Boo hoo! Not bad enough to keep me from work...but enough of one to make me uncomfortable and a little weak. :-\ I started taking Emergen C & Ziacam and this normally helps to fight the bug off. Wish me luck. :P

Not to be beaten down by a pesty cold, I am baking cookies at the moment: chocolate & butterscotch chips and walnuts. Yummy! There is something homey and warm about baking especially on a rainy, cold gloomy day like today. It makes me feel snug.

I have a few washing in right now. So after baking my cookies and folding laundry I think I will take a nap. Gotta keep my energy up. My brother's girlfriend is having a house warming party tonight. Hopefully I will have more energy this evening. ::) Something tells me I won't be staying long. ;)

So whatcha all up too today? :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!

Thanks my dear! :) I am hoping the cold will pass quickly. If it doesn't it won't be for the lack of trying on my part. ;D

Yes...it is rainy as I type. Not super heavy, but one of those drizzly soaking rains. It is really gloomy out too. Ya know...dark and damp enough to make you feel a little gloomy too. :-\ But we do need the moisture before everything freeze so I am trying not to complain. ;)

One wash done and put away...one more to go. The cookies are cooling on the racks and I am trying to decide whether to take a nap or take a shower. Hmmmmm...just don't know what to do next. :-\

Thanks, Mary! I am feeling much better. In fact, I didn't get it too bad...only sick for three days. ;D

Liz, you really made me chuckle with the Texans on the train. I TOTALLY understand what that must have been like. ;) Bet you needed some earplugs. :D

There is a lot of talk about moving to 4 10 hour days out here in America - for quite a few reasons...some green and saving energy and some about increased efficiency with 10 hr days. It sure will be interesting to see what happens.

I agree - 2-3 hour days would be perfect. ;D However, I have to make a tad more money to be able to maintain a house, health insurance, retirement and all that fun stuff. :P

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on November 25, 2008, 03:10:09 pm

Hey culpie, glad you are feeling a better!

The weather here has been absolutely freezing but the things that gets me down most is how early it gets dark. I love it in summer when it stays light until 10.30 or 11 in the evening. The one highlight is that, now it's dark so early, all the Christmas lights are lit up when I come home from school in the town.

Elizabeth, is it strange to be getting ready for Christmas in the summer? Do you feel less Christmassy than you would normally at this time of year?

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: elizabeth coffey on November 25, 2008, 06:31:17 pm

Yeah we dont feel christmassy just yet it's not too bad being in the summer. Not sure what we doing yet as we running the place over xmas.
May go out with a lady from backpackers to a meal on xmas day or have something with Mel and Alan. ::) Posted our xmas cards yesterday to my mum,dad and brothers and marks mum :)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on November 27, 2008, 11:26:05 pm

You are so right, Mary! I can't stand how early it gets dark. When I leave work around 5pm it is as dark as 11 pm in the summer. :'( Sigh. Oh well...we are rapidly approaching Dec. 21 and then we will start swinging closer to those lovely summer nights again. ;)

How interesting it must be to celebrate Christmas during the summer. It would be hard to get used to....plus it would seem funny to not have the Christmas holiday to break up the winter. :)

how goes it everyone else?

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on November 30, 2008, 08:42:13 pm

Doing pretty good...trying to get some last minute things done before getting ready for bed. I have been cleaning out my storage room and it is a formable task. ::) It seems like it gets worse instead of better...but I guess cleaning is that way. :-\

My brothers have been helping to complete on of the unfinished rooms in my apartment. It used to have a sauna, but they ripped it out, re-wired the electricity in the entire room (the wiring was horrible and dangerous), framed in the furnaces and sheetrocked and mudded the walls. We are almost ready to seal and paint the walls and roof. I can't wait...when anyone does sheetrock it is so dusty and time consuming. Ugh! I finally gave up and will thoroughly clean the apartment when they are completely done - next weekend I believe. 8)

After sealing and painting the walls and roof, we will be installing the floor. Can't wait until it is completely done...especially since I need to seal and paint the entire basement. :P

I ordered my new Christmas tree (artificial one...really nice and realistic) Saturday...so it should be arriving Tuesday. Yahoo! ;) Did I mention that I LOVE Christmas...hee hee.

How are things going with you, Liz? Phones any busier? Is everyone checked in now? How long will you and Mark be in charge?

Hi Mary! I actually ordered an nice artificial tree this year and you have to order them the 1st or 2nd week of December or they run out. It arrived Friday so I put it together and checked the lights to make sure it works, but won't be decorating it until maybe Sunday. I used to wait to put it up until the third week of December, but my schedule is very busy. If I don't put it up this weekend...it won't get done. ;D I so LOVE Christmas!

Sorry to hear you were sick! Quite a few of my family have gotten ill too...sounds like a similar bug. Blah. :-X At least you won't have to worry about getting sick for Christmas. ;)

Hi Liz! Hope you are doing well today!

I just got back from shopping all day with my mum. I took the day off to do some Christmas shopping with mum. We had a good time and I took her out to lunch.

Things have been VERY busy at work and home - haven't been online for ooooo...about 2 weeks...I think. Just thougth I would try and catch up on everyone's news.

How's everyone doing?

Hey Culpie!

I love Christmas, I bet your tree will look great! My uncle owns a garden centre so we always get a real tree, I love the smell - but it drops needles everywhere! This is the first Christmas we've had our dog and we think, going on his average destruction rate, that he might attempt to eat the tree. :P

I hope your family members are OK - but you're right, at least it's out of the way!

Nice to hear you did a bit of shopping. I haven't done anything yet - agh!

Hope you're well Elizabeth!

Brrrrr...getting chilly around here! It is 0F and with the wind chill it is 20F below 0F. (I think that is about -28 C...is that right?) It is supposed to drop to about 30 - 40F below 0 this evening. Gotta luv Montana! ::)

Fortunately it is still snowing and my plants have a lovely white blanket. The snow is still falling and they are predicting 8 - 11 inches today....it actually looks like the weathermen might be right for a change. ;D

I just got back inside after collecting enough wood for two days, shovelling my patio and deck upstairs. I feel like a woman from the old days today. Hee hee...nothing like hard work to get the blood flowing. ;) Now I am hungry....so as soon as my woodstove going it is LUNCH TIME!

So I will actually have some online time. :) I hope it isn't as cold where you all are as it is here. Although I can't really complain...you do get used to it being this cold out here. Minus 20F is nothing. :P

It is still chilly however, it is 16F so we can't complain too much. ;D It is snowing and really windy out there. Mum is sick so I am home from work. So besides keeping the woodstove going...I am just hopping around the house doing odds & ends.

Are you all ready for Christmas? :D

It's v quiet only 1000 people live here. It is named after the glacier like the nearby town franz josef! There is only a general store(no supermarket) a couple pubs and cafes and a souvenir shop also tours ie glacier walk/glacier helicopter.

Hope everyone has agreat christmas, speak soon and take care :-*

Christmas certainly was a whirlwind of activity! ;D It has warmed up out here (a nice balmy 30F). I am totally enjoying my woodstove, a cup of tea and watching Shark Week (a gift from my sister for Christmas). So I am happy as a clam.

Ooooo...sounds like my kind of place, Liz! How's the weather been? Did it dry off a bit. ;)

Elizabeth - Fox Glacier sounds really quiet and old-fashioned, a bit of a place for outdoors-y people. :) I bet it's beautiful. I hope Bex is nice.

Culpie, glad you are having a good time, my sister is obsessed with all things to do with sharks. I quite like watching things about them on TV, I think they're really interesting - but I wouldn't want to get too close though!

Mary, they certainly are fascinating creatures. However, I agree with you....I have no desire to get "up close and personal" with them. Aquariums and documentaries are good enough for me. :D

Liz, gosh that would be fun to have someone else from your native country. I hope Bex is a lot of fun!

Hi Mary & Liz!

I am still busily studying for my PHR exam in June. Ugh! It is really hard to go back to studying after being out of college for about 15 years. Gad, I am getting old. ;D

The weather is doing its spring craziness again. It was about 54F today...but the wind came up this evening and a storm is blowing in. Looks like we may have snow by morning. Crazy mountain weather! ::)

Sounds kinda fun, Liz! I hope you and Mark are still enjoying yourselves! I have been keeping up on your activities via your blog. Love the pics! You guys take great picture. ;)

Shayda, I hope things are going well for you out in California! I am still thinking and praying for you.

Mary, congratulations on getting an offer from the uni you wanted! I am sure you will get the grades necessary to get in. ;D You sound like a smart girl! ;)

I am still alive, still studying for my exam in June and trying to keep my soul and body together. ::) The pace of my life is so crazy at the moment. Honestly, I wonder if I can get everything done this summer. Gulp! If I pass my exam in June...things should settle down quite a bit.

I am getting chicks this week. Finally decided it was time to get chickens again. My brother is going to help me build a coup for the "girls". The next "shipment" of chicks should be arriving this week at our ranch and feed store. I am hoping to get six barred rock chicks. They are really pretty birds and great egg layers. Can't wait. ;D I am so excited that I feel like a little kid. ;) You will have to bear with me when I ramble on about the "girls". i will have to share pics when I get them.

How's everyone doing? I hope everyone is having a Happy Easter! :)

Post by: Culpie on May 25, 2009, 01:33:37 am

Mary, you had chickens? I KNEW you were a girl after my own heart! ;) I did get them on April 16th and they are now about 6 weeks old - out grown their 1st home - a rabbit cage. Now they are temporarily living in a borrowed dog cage in my garage. My brothers came up last weekend to help build a coop. It is almost done...just need to finish the windows and door. Then we are set to go. How's the studying going? Mine is a little brutal...but going ok. I am praying to pass so I can get the $250 exam fee paid by my company. I have my fingers crossed for you. I bet you will do really well! ;D

Liz, it is so hard to believe that you and Mark have been there almost a year! Gosh...I still remember when you were getting ready to go. How great that you have kept us all up-to-date thr A&F and your blog. I feel like have went with you...hee hee! ;D

Shayda, how are you? I haven't heard how you are fairing in CA. Did they finally do your surgery? Even though I haven't been online much this past month...I have been thinking about ya. Hope you are well on the road to recovery by now!

So how are things going for you, chickies? :) Everyone surviving May?

Hey Culpie - glad you are enjoying your chickens! I bet they'll love their coop. :) Are you keeping them as pets, or for eggs? (or eating? ;) )

Hope your studying is going well - best of luck for the exam, keeping you in my thoughts. :-*

My studying is going OK - the hardest of my exams are over now, only got 2 left so looking forward to finishing next Thursday!

Elizabeth - hope you're well too, I'm really happy for you that you had the chance to go to NZ for as long as you did. :-*

Shayda - hoping you are well. :-*

You go, girl! :D

The chickens are for eggs, but are ending up to be pets. ;) Just par for the course when you only have 7. To quote from Sarah Plain and Tall: "Those chickens won't be for eating." heh heh ;D Guess I am a bad farm girl, but I just can't eat my pets.

Ok...I am going offline for the rest of the week. Hope I can come back next week with good news. Otherwise I will have to wait until december to take my exam again. Perish the thought! ::)

Anyone heard from Shayda yet? I am still waiting to hear back from her and hope she is ok. :-\

Culpie - great news, congratulations! All your hard work paid off! Wow, 4 hours is so long to be concentrating non-stop - were you alowed food or drink in the exam?

Yes, I'm keeping Shayda in my thoughts - really praying she recovers quickly.

Elizabeth - its nice that you've got plans (shame about the dentist though :P ). Tenerife will be fun - do you have friends there?

I'm finished all my exams now, except an Italian reading and listening (which I don't really count as it isn't an A-level, more just for fun). It's so nice to relax. :)

Too funny, Liz! Of course, if your teeth didn't get fixed you would be really suffering. ;) Ok...I know...I sound like Pollyanna. Heh heh. I actually had to have two root cannals re-done and a crown three month ago....so i really do feel your pain. Dang...it is expensive isn't it. UGH! ::)

Thanks, Mary! Yeah...4 hrs was a long time. They didn't let you have anything inside the testing room except our driver's license. If we needed to use the bathroom or get a drink we had to leave the room, turn in our license and sign out. They even video recorded the testing room. There is NO way you could cheat on this exam. They made us take off our watches. What a hoot! Sooooo very glad it is all behind me. 8)

How about you...did you finish your last exam? Isn't it wonderful to be done for the summer? I actually miss those days. ;D

Tenerife sounds fun, Liz! I hope you two have a great time. Good luck to Mark on the job interview! ;D

Just finished chatting with Shayda on Yahoo. She sounds good even if she had brain injury due to the surgery. Poor thing! I sure hope she heals quickly! :-*

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!

I dont feel the pain, is just expensive. 2, I will have had 2 by end today.

A time to relax! Thanks, tho Mark doesnt really want the job, less pay for more tasks.

Thats sad news on Shayda, hope she recovers soon.

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!

Hey Culpie! Wow, there really was anti-cheating measures in place there! Well done on passing - I bet it's a relief. :)

Yeah, I'm finished all my exams now - it's brilliant to relax. :)

Best of luck to Shayda - I hope she recovers quickly.

Elizabeth - I have a deep fear of dentists...I hope it goes well for you though! :D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on June 28, 2009, 03:43:21 pm

Liz, how did the dentist appointments go? Are they all set now? I know these things have to be fixed, but I sure hate having dental work done. :-* Did you enjoy your mini vacation?

Yahoo! Glad all those exams are over for you, Mary! Yes, it is a HUGE relief to be free now. It feels like I have lots of time now to work in the garden and plan things like our upcoming Independence Day celebration with the family. 8)

The weather is glorious out here! Sunny, warm (about 80's F) with a nice breeze blowing. Finally feels like summer here. ;D

My chickens are now in their coop! Got them moved in Friday evening. Only complication....I think I have a rooster. :o Sooooo I will be looking for a home for him this week. Dang thing is so mean to the chicks. I had to take one of my girls out because he pecked her badly. >:( Grrrrr! I am sure he is going to go into someone's pot. ;) The girls should start laying sometime in August or September.

Other than that things are poking along. Just finished a week of running training for 4 groups. Gad...it sure is exhausting. So I am looking forward to settling down this week and getting a lot of my other duties and tasks done.

How is everyone else doing?

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on June 28, 2009, 04:21:31 pm

Are you doing anything nice for Independance Day, Culpie? I always thought it sounded like a really fun festival - I'd love to go to New York or somewhere one year for the celebrations. :)

It feels like summer here too - I even have a little bit of sunburn, which is pretty unusual. :P :)

Yes, you'd better get rid of the rooster, in case those eggs aren't chick-free. :P I hope you find a good home for him though. :P I bet you're looking forward to that first egg! :)

Good luck in all your work for the next while!

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on June 28, 2009, 04:30:35 pm

I LOVE the 4th of July! For many reasons: birthday of our country, it is summer, fireworks and family BBQ's and gatherings. ;D My family will be getting together for a big BBQ and then will have fireworks as soon as it gets dark enough. Of course my family is a bit zaney, but that is what makes it so fun! The kiddies love that their grandma, aunties and uncles all get together to celebrate. :D They get to see us acting like big kids....which doesn't happen often. We will play soccer, tag, softball and all sort of games with them....guess this makes it extra special for them. ;D

Going to one of the big cities would be quite the experience, but we all prefer the country where everything is more sincere and less commericalized. You get the parades and all those fun local things. However, that being said...NY or Chicago or one of the big cities is a fun place to experience the 4th. ;D I personally hate those crowds and prefer space and fun on a small scale. Hee hee! 8)

I really am looking forward to my first egg! ;D Can't wait...it will be tasty. ;)

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on June 29, 2009, 04:50:09 am

That sounds really fun Culpie - we don't really have any festivals like that here. I guess the biggest is St Patricks Day - but to be honest that's more about the drinking than anything. :P

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: Culpie on June 30, 2009, 12:54:12 am

It is fun, Mary. Don't feel bad...some people out here use any holiday as an excuse for drinking. ::) Not a whole lot of difference in people around the world sometimes. :P

There is a city not too far from us called Butte. It is where a lot of Irish immigrants came to work and settle into America. There is a HUGE mine: copper, coal, and precious metals. There is a very large statue of the Blessed Mother overlooking the town. It is pretty neat.

However, there is a very large St. Patrick's Day celebration. It is crazy there on St Patrick's Day. In fact, I wouldn't be caught dead there at that time. You should just see the drinking and craziness that goes on there. Apparently, it started when they build a college there...and now there are tons of people who come from out of state and cities outside of Butte for the "festivities". >:( Kinda of annoying and certainly not in the spirit of the celebration. Ahhh well. ;)

Doesn't Ireland celebrate their foundation? Gosh...America is only 233 years old. Ireland is ALOT older than that. Do you ever have fireworks for any occassion? New Years maybe? I find it very interesting what other countries celebrate and how they celebrate. Sometimes I forget or assume most countries celebrate like we do...no the holidays necessarily...but the manner of celebrating. Silly of me really. ;D

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on June 30, 2009, 06:29:24 am

Well, we have a lot of fireworks on Halloween - Halloween is quite a big thing here.

I don't really know when you'd celebrate Ireland's foundation - I mean, USA is a country that had a proper founding, sort of, but Ireland has always just been here. I guess some people might want to celebrate partition (when Northern Ireland was set up) but that would hardly be a celebration for most Irish people as we don't think partition is right. :P This is getting a bit heavy, isn't it? :D

I bet the statue is nice. I love seeing things like that if we go on a drive or something. Once we were on holiday in the South of Ireland and we saw a statue by the side of a motorway, so we drove off to have a look at it because it looked similar to one we have in my town - and they were done by the same sculptor! It's a small world sometimes. :)

Elizabeth - heh. :)

Culpie - on Halloween, we have fireworks in the evening and things - in England they celebrate Bonfire Night on the 5th November but we don't do it here, so we just have everything on Halloween. It's fun - everyone dresses up and things like in America, I suppose. :)

I'm back from two weeks in France - had a lovely time though the weather wasn't up to much!

Whoa!!! :o Long time no see! Hi guys!!!

Mary, the chickens are alive and kicking. Two of my hens started laying two weeks ago. The eggs are pretty small, but still usable. My brother is helping me make my nesting boxes now and over the next few months I will have to winter-proof the coop. Basically finish the windows, finish insulating the walls and get the coop wired for lights (basically a single heating lamp). Since it gets down to the -40F frequently...the heat lamp should help keep them toasty on those frigid nights. :D

Liz, sorry the job search has been difficult. Lots of folks looking for work out here. We recently posted for 4-5 positions and were besieged with applicantion. Whew...it was quite the job to sort through them all. Anything new on the horizon?

No news on Shayda, eh?

Mary, so sorry to have missed you! Bet you are already settled at the uni. :'( I hope we will still hear from you from time to time. You will be busy, but don't forget us. :-*

Bad news on the chicken front! A bobcat killed all my chickens! :'( It makes me so mad. He only ate one, but killed the others for later. Grrrrr! Poor girls didn't have a chance. :-[ It is too late in the year to start over again besides...if i have chickens next spring I will have to do some major changes to the chicken yard to prevent the cat from getting in again. :P

Any news, Liz? Do you know how long you have to wait before hearing from the agent about NZ?

Has anyone heard how Shayda is doing? Vicki...are you around still? I keep hoping she made a complete recovery and is home again, but no word has me worried. :-\

Hi everyone!

Culpie - haha, you don't get rid of me that easily! ;) Right now I've got loads of free time because my lectures are at different times from my friends', so when their in class I don't have much to do, so I'm here plenty. We'll see if that changes when I start getting essays and things to write though. :P

Sorry to hear about your chickens. :'( It's such a shame. But what's a bobcat?

Hi Elizabeth, hope you get good news from your interview. :)

hello, everybody!

guess what? i have a crazy history teacher. he is really funny but wicked weird. like, one time, at the beginning of class, he started to sing and said, "sorry, i don't sing very well. i blew all my money that my mother gave me for singing lessons." and on the very first day of school, some teacher brought him some coffee and he said, "hey! put some drugs in it next time." weird....very strange. ;D also, if you forget your history book, he gets all psycho and throws an extra one at you!!! i mean it! he throws it! and if you don't catch it, you'll be guaranteed to be hit in the face. :P he is just weird. my brother had him when he was my age as his history teacher for both 8th and 7th grade. my brother said that sometimes, he puts on "Crank Dat" by Soulja Boy on when you walk into class. haha, he says that one time when he walked into class, he heard a huge, "YOU!" from Soulja Boy! LOL, must have been funny!

just wanted to share that with you guys. peace out! :) ;)

Long time no see! Hi there, Mary! Glad you still have time to pop in. You asked about a bobcat. It is part of the cat family (wild that is)
like a lynx. Quite a bit smaller than a mountain lion (or cougar), but bigger than a fox. They are quite a problem because of their elusiveness. Bobcat are no dumb animals. If they start to attack your farm animals you either have to construct a bobcat-proof shelter or sit and wait for it to return capture or kill it. Needless-to-say we now have no jack rabbits, cotton tails rabbits or small rodents...so he is still around. It is fascinating that I have never since him...only his tracks.

Hi Liz, Jen and Vicky! Hope you are all doing well! ;D

hi thanks for the info on the bobcat Culpie. I am doing well once we get jobs will be doing even better. The building work is still going on next door, banging away and drilling occasionally, so annoying :P

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on October 12, 2009, 07:45:53 am

Hi Culpie! How are you? Wow, bobcats sound scary, we don't have anything like that here! It is odd that you've never seen him, he must be very elusive.

Elizabeth - I hope you get a job soon. And I hate hearing building work too, especially drills - they just keep going. :P

Howdy Ladies,

Things have been crazy busy which is becoming normal for me. ;D Had a lovely Thanksgiving and Christmas. Very much looking forward to the new year. As always...I have some plans for working on my faults and failings...but nothing too huge. ;)

How were your holidays? Sounds like Uni is going well for ya, Mary. So nice you are close enough to go home. NZ in April, Liz? How fun! It will be nice for you and Mark to look forward to the trip as you are immersed in the nitty-gritty of daily living. Are you still living with Mark's parents or did you get a place of your own yet. I can't remember since I have been offline for so long. :)

About two months ago I joined a scrapbooking group. So once a month we all get together and scrapbook. Lots of fun...especially since they are such nice ladies.

Title: Re:Our random ramblings!!!
Post by: maryd on June 03, 2010, 05:55:49 am

Raquel - ooh, you can speak Italian? I did Italian classes for a year and I really loved it. Lots of Italian words actually sound similar to French words, because they come from the same root (Latin), so if you decided to learn French now it would be quite easy for you if you know Italian. I found Italian easy because I already spoke French, lol! :)

Elizabeth - I'm just going to take it easy this summer. I'm going to do a little bit of work for my uncle, and then I'm going on a family holiday (2 weeks) and an intensive Irish course (3 weeks). Should be fun! :D

Yes, I heard they are smiliar. But I also speak Portuguese, so they can be quite similar like, for example when we say "molto, " lol. Is not the language itself I am frustrating on, its the teacher and the students in my class. The grade elevens act like kids when I'm in grade 10, lol. Plus, it can get sorta frustrating when you have to do like paragraphs....and we just learned the language. It's hard to know where to put your pronouns, how to conjugate certain verbs, where to put words(which are backwards when we say it in English :P) Ya, stuff like that, haha.

You speak Italian ? =) You are brave if you learn french. This is a difficult language. I think english is cleary easier than the latins languages.
All the irregulars verbs, the grammar joy's (specially the sentences construction), the very long list of the orthographes cases. And the sentences pronunciation !
(And I also do latin which is it's very helpful for the grammar. So, when I do a latin traduction, I think at all the foreign students who learn french because they're very brave ^^)

I don't really speak Italian, I just took the course to learn something new, since I love to learn new languages. But since school is done here, I can speak a bit of it. Simple sentence though - its a start :P
Since I live in Canada, I have to take French and I was quite good at it. I was good at making sentence(at times) especially verbs. Just the pronunciation is hard at times since I am not really French also doing reading comprehension is very hard. If I have to take an elective for University, I am definitely taking French. I think its a beautiful language :) :P

Long time no see, Mary! :) Hard to believe you have finished your 1st yr at the uni. Wow...seems like you just started a couple days ago. ;) Sounds like you enjoyed the experience and are doing well. Have you gone on your 2 wk vacation yet?

My family (bros, sis and nieces & nephews) just spent an extended weekend camping at the lake. Lots of fun! The kiddies had a ball swimming, tenting, water skiing, inner-tubing, etc. The weather was awesome...pretty warm 90F so lots of time in the water.

I have two new nephews since last posting: Andrew (May 19) and Joseph (July 10th). So the Culpie clan is growing. ;D One more baby due this September. Funny how three of my in-laws were all due around the same season.

Liz, how are thing going? Looks like you are still enjoying NZ. Can't believe you have been there over a month now! Time really flies! How's the job search?

Shayda, are you online much? I still think of you often and hoping your are continuing to heal. :-*

Fabulous, Liz! Can't believe it has been 2 1/2 months already :o Is it really hard to get permanent work in NZ?

What is randstad education? I don't think I have ever heard of it before ??? and now am curious. ;)

The summer is going really well this year. Seems like getting off my lazy duff has been great for me. Lots of yardwork and home projects to be done before winter. Work has been going really well too. Time keeps speeding away. The Back-to-School sales have started out here and lots of people are talking about the end of summer. :o I am just not ready for it to end. :'(

Anything new on the job front?

3 months now :) Mark is working full time permanent at PCU I am still temping but applying for jobs at same time. randstad education is a recruitment agency specializing in jobs like early childcare teachers or early childcare relief staff qualified or unqualified

Aww - hang in there I hope soon you will have some stress free time :-*
