Oh I know, I was just pointing out that in Italian, even though the word for chicken is spelled the same as in Spanish (p-o-l-l-o), it's not pronounced the same, which in Spanish it sounds like "poyo". It's pronounced like it's spelled-"poh-low". :)

I know a lot of people on this forum are from different places around the world and you all speak a lot of differnt languages! Anyone fancy contributing a few useful phrases in their own languages?

I'll start with some Irish -
To say hello, there's 4 different ways:
If you speak 1st to one person, 'Dia duit' (pronounced: jaya ditch)
If you reply to one person, 'Dia is Muire duit' (p: jaya is murra ditch)
If you speak 1st to more than one person, you say: 'dia daoibh' (jaya deeve)
And to reply to more than 1 person: 'Dia is Muire daoibh' (jaya is murra deeve)

Anyone want to join in?

oh that's so cool!!

I'm from Holland and to say hello, there are so many ways!

to someone who's older and you've gotta respect (like teachers, elderly(non-relative)) you say: "Goedendag" or "Hallo" (Goedendag is hard to pronounce for English people, but Hallo is pronounced just like Hello, except the "e" is an "a" as in hard)
To your friends you say: "Hoi" (as in Ahoy, like pirates do lol)
but we also just say hey or hi.

There are also many ways to say how are you.
"hoe is het?" (hoe= as in shoe, is= is (nothing different) and het= as in cat, but the c=h)
"Alles goed?" (hard to pronounce because of the g)
"Hoe gaat het?" (also hard becaue of the g)

Thanks for replying! So I would say 'Hoi' to you?

To say goodbye in Irish, there's a whole load of ways! Again!
To say to one person leaving: 'Slan leat' and to say to a lot of people leaving, 'Slan libh' (they;re pronounced 'slan' as in 'slang' 'latt' and 'liv' as in 'Liv Tyler)
Then if you;re the one leaving, you say 'Slan agat' (slan ugget) or 'Slan agaibh' (slan uggiv).
Then, you can also say 'Slan abhaile' (slan a-walla) which means safe home, and 'slan go foill' (slan go foyle) which means see you soon!

Goodbye has many ways too!

Doei (casual, you dont really say that to older people or in formel occasions) [pronounced as... I dunno... haha it's weird lol]
Dag (you can use it always) [hard to pronounce because of the G]
Hoi (if with friends or people you know) [ponounced same as the other hoi]
Doeg (same as doei) [hard to pronounce because of the g, but it's kinda like dag and doei together]
Tot ziens (to people you don't know or people who are older. They also say Tot Ziens when you walk out of a shop or something) [Tot = Tot, nothing weird Ziens = as in teens, but the z is as in zoo]

I studyed English, Frech and Russian in school and English was a piece of cake compared to those other 2. French has a killer greammar and Russian is a nightmear (with the whole diferent alphabet and all)

English is not the hardest language AT ALL!! French sucks indeed, and Dutch is soooo hard to learn! We've got all these stupid phrases and eventhough our family is 1000000000000000% dutch, I still suck at it. My English is better, if you look at m results in school. I get 8/10 for English and 6/10 for Dutch lol :P

German isn't that hard, it's a bit like Dutch.. but easier lol :P Even German is easier than Dutch!!

Well not really scary but let`s just say that when you look at all you have to learn it makes you thionk twice about staring it at all. I do like it and I`m seriously thinking about starting, I just hope I get the time.

maryd, do you know how you would say 'my name is...' in Irish? My Irish is incredibly basic because I picked it up from my dad. So I only know hello, goodbye and totally random things like "close the door" and "get the milk" because he tends to order me about in Irish. ::)

Grammar in any language is difficult I think. Spanish grammar is crazy.

I had a teacher who could pick up languages in a week. It was scary. A week into our German exchange he was having full conversations with the students in German. I'd barely mastered the basics. (Yes, it is a silly idea to go on a German exchange when you don't speak the language, but they were short on students)

Title: Re:Crash course in many languages
Post by: Melancholie on June 22, 2007, 04:26:03 pm

Two years ago we had an exchange student from australia in our class for one year. She picked up our language really fast, which was a little bit surprising for me at that time.
But I recognized that learning a language when you with people for whom it is their mother tongue, you learn it really fast. Last year I've stayed in russia for ten days and I'd never spoken russian before, but at the end of our stay, I could understand some questions they've asked.
That was really cool, because we've understood only by listening.

Mrs Wood - I'd love to learn a bit of Turkish!
Everyone, just jump in here! We could write our own phrase book... ;)

Rai - to say 'my name is' in Irish, you say 'Is mise....(your name)'. Thats pronounced 'is misha'. It actually means 'I am...' but you use it to say your name too!

Melancholy - I expect thats true - if you live with people that speak the language you're bound to pick it up faster!

I love it when you hear random things in a language that sound the same in English - I was looking for ages for a similarity between Irish and English, and a teacher at school told me this one:

The Irish for 'I like it!' is 'is maith liom sin!' (is my lumm shin)
Apparently, when English settlers or whatever first heard this, they translated it into 'smashing'! I find this a little hard to believe, but there you go!

I think that depends on the length of time you're around them and when you become involved with the people LOL. My ex-boy friend and current close friend is Japanese. I've know him for just over 8 years and i'm always over his house. Both of his parents don't have very good english as both their jobs don't require them to speak much english, his grandparents speak no english and his sister is just getting the hang of it - And after 8 years i've learnt next to nothing!! LOL!!

But here's some stuff off the top of my head (it's probably spelt wrong):
Hello: Konnichiwa
My Name Is *Insert Name Here*: Watashi no namae wa *name* desu
It's Beautiful: Kirei desu
Good Morning: Ohayo gozaimasu (Pronounced: O-hi-o Goz-i-mas)

Title: Re:Crash course in many languages
Post by: maryd on June 25, 2007, 06:50:37 am

I've always wanted to learn Japanese or Chinese, I think as languages go, they're probably the coolest!!

To say 'How are you?' in Irish, you say 'Cad é mar atá tú?' which is pronounced 'cadge eh mar atta too?'
To say 'I'm fine', you say 'Tá mé go maith,' pronouced 'tah may go moye.'
And the, if you feel rotton, say 'Tá mé go holc'. (tah may go holk).
;D

Fine with me! :)

So....to say a basic goodbye in Irish - 'slán'. There are a lot of variants on this, depending on how many people there are, and whether you are leaving or someone else is leaving. But you can just say 'slán', which covers them all. :)
