Title: History
Post by: maryd on March 23, 2010, 12:58:41 pm

I've been reading up a bit on my history lately (Irish, modern) and it got me thinking that some people are of course more interested in some sorts of history than other types.

What's your favourite historical period? And why do you like it so much? Do you connect with it in some way? Any interesting facts you'd like to share? :)

I just finished studying the Renessance time period in school. I did enjoy it, but I think the type of history I like best is like the mid-evil time period, like with the queens and kings, and castles, and knights and stuff. lol :)

I've just always liked that kind of stuff, but I haven't really studied enough of it. I've always loved horseback battles and swordfighting, rather than gun wars. :)

^ That's really interesting, everyone! I never got to study ancient Rome or Greece in school and I always felt like I was missing out. We did Ancient Egypt loads of times, though, which was really interesting too. :)

To be honest, though, I prefer modern history. For my A-levels, we studied a lot about the Nazis and Mussolini, which I found completely fascinating, and also recent Northern Irish history, which I love learning about.

I guess as a history student I should say I have an interest in history.

World War Two is also very interesting, I guess the word is a little misplaced here, but I love learning all about it.

When I was in Berlin, we went to the House of Wansee, a huge house where the solution to the Jew-problem was made. The second I set foot on the property I felt different... On one hand I felt really angry, but on the other hand I felt really peaceful... It was a very scary sensation. I'd love to go to Auschwitz some day.

Pamela - Auschwitz is such an experience. It was so interesting, but heart-breaking too. :'( I went to Berlin on a school trip a couple of years ago and I went to Wansee as well. I think it's good that these places are open to inform people about what happened - actually visiting them made all that history much more real to me.

Yeah it did to me as well!! We had to sit in the actual room where the plans were made, it was so surreal at first... and then you see all the original notes and handwritings and autographs... and then things get so real and it's actually a little overwhelming. And then you walk out of the house, walk around in the beautiful gardens and see the beautiful lake and you look at the beautiful house... but the contrast is sooo huge! Everything you look at, it's beautiful and peaceful... but the athmosphere and the history that goes along with it... it's just horrifying.

Wow, that sounds really interesting, I'd love to go see those places someday. :) But yeah, it is a horrifying thing that happened. :'(

My favourite historic period is ancient civilizations. Especially Greece, Rome, Trojan War,Egypt,Germany, Poland...... They are very fascinating to me. I'm also a fond of The World War's especially the second one.
I'm not a huge history fan of Politics and what has happened in the past through government relations, because they don't usually change, besides some things like for colored peoples freedom :)

Pam-I really want to see Auschwitz as well. One of my history teachers daughter went there, and she cried a lot from all the tragic that happened. The only thing I don't want to see is the gas chambers because I'll get nasty thoughts from all those darling children, ugh, I can't even begin the horror.

I feel like I have to see that, because if I don't, it feels like I'm denying what's happened. I feel like I can't go see this but not that, because then I won't acknowledge it's actually happened, you see? And the gas chambers were a big part of the war.

I've been to Berlin and there was this Jewish museum, with a fake gas chamber (just a room, it didn't look like a real one) but when I was in there, it was pitchblack with only a little bit of light and there were stairs there, but they were too high off the ground to actually reach. I don't think it was a gas chamber, now thinking of it, but it was probably some other way to torture and kill jews. It was horrible to even be in there, to feel so trapped and desorientated. To know you there is a possibility to get out, but you just can't reach it. Yep, makes you feel helpless and hopeless.
