Title: Abortion
Post by: Misz_Mii on February 18, 2010, 09:36:38 am

Okay, there are so many interesting discussions lately on this board (YAY!!! ;D ) I thought let's discuss another topic. To some it's quite a big deal and it's quite a tough topic, but I think it's interesting to see everyones thoughts on abortion.

Personally I'm totally pro-choice. I don't see abortion as a form of anticonception, but I could imagine some situations in which abortion would be your answer. I don't see abortion as murder, for the simple fact that the zygote or the foetus can't live outside the mother.

Let's get the discussion started :D

I'm gonna post in this thread.

Before I get started can I just ask, why is the board so obsessed with death and surgery lately? ;) ;) ;) (Organ donation, abortion, life after death, fur...)

My view is as follows:

I don't agree with abortion unless neither the mother or child will survive pregnancy. I think if you are big enough to have sex then you're big enough to deal with the consequences. And if you don't want the child have it adopted, there are millions of women who desperately want children but can't have any. Give your child to them.

If you are going to have an abortion then I feel it should be the woman’s choice and no-one else’s. Not the baby's father, not the Grandparents, just the pregnant woman’s. My mother became pregnant at 16 years old and she wanted to keep the baby but when my grandmother found out she took my mom for an abortion that my mom did not want. My Grandmother said to my mom "You either get rid of it or get out of this house" and my mom went and packed her bags but my Gran had already made the appointment. My Grandfather didn't know until he noticed how mom and Gran interacted with each other, he took my Gran outside the room (still in the hospital so my mom could still see everything) and then after Gran had obviously told him what had happened, my grandfather did something he had never done before then or after then he slapped around the face. Afterwards he came back to my mother and said to her "If you ever get into trouble like this again, you come to me not her."

She hasn't. When my mom feel pregnant with my brother, Gran suggested she have an abortion, then he was born and she found out he was a boy she said "Maybe next time you'll get a girl", then when my mom told her she was pregnant with me "There are things you can do to alter your situation you know..." (ie abort me) then when I was found to be a girl "Maybe next time you'll get a boy."

There are no words to describe properly how I feel about your Gran, I am so glad your mum never listened to her and you and your brother were born :-*

Gran kind of got her wish, as my twin died.

I am so sorry to hear that Vicky :-*

I never knew him/her she was born/died before me so sometimes I feel like I have to try and make it for him/her too. And of course sometimes I'm sure the wrong twin survived.

Would any-one here have an abortion or know someone who has or you...?

I'm sorry to hear that, Victoria.

My views on abortion stand pretty much the same as I said in the thread Elizabeth has linked to - so, no, I would personally never have an abortion. And I don't know anyone who has.

I would never have an abortion under any circumstances, no. I do know someone who had a termination she was an old work colleague at London Scottish think she was 16 when she had one forgotten the reason

Oh haha I even responded to that thread :P I'm so stupid :P

Anyways, thanks for the replies :D

Well I would abort if I were raped. Because I would never be able to take proper care of the kid, because I didn't want it in the first place and because it would remind me too much of the pain and hurt I had to go through to get the baby. If you have unprotected sex or had an accident, you have to deal with it, you have sex, you deal with whatever happens after that. But if you were raped, you couldn't help it, so it's like... It's just way different.

So yeah, I'd have an abortion under certain circumstances. I don't know anyone who has had an abortion, I guess... But I'd support it, if only the reasons were plausible.

This is how I can say for certainty. As y'all know I was raped, and although I was too young to actually become pregnant I know that I couldn't abort if it (God forbid) happened now. I totally understand your view point Pam, the child is a reminder for most people but would you not be able to consider having the child adopted?

I think that it's far too easy to get an abortion nowadays. At least it is in Norway. In my class in... (High school I think it is) I had a girl who took two abortions in just one year. After the second one, she broke down and quit school. It was her boyfriend who had forced her to do it. I spoke to her some weeks ago, and she's still ruined, two years later.

If I got pregnant today, I would have kept it. My boyfriend and I are both students, but we would have found ways to be able to keep it.

Even though the foetus can't live outside the mother, I think it's murder. I don't see birth control stuff as murder, but abortion is.

But of course, I think there are some situations you are "allowed" to do it. If it will ruin your and/or the life of the child and if you were raped or otherwise abused.

And I think it's fully up to the mother. But I'm not sure what to do in a situation where the father is willing to take care of the child and the mother doesn't want it.

Adoption is just as hard, I think. Because it's like... you carry the child for 9 months and I think it'd be hard to just carry it through, knowing it's not what you wanted. You'll be confronted with what happened daily for the next 9 months. It'd be too hard on me, I think.

If you were not raped and were to put the kid up for adoption, I believe it'd be hard to give up the baby as well. As I said, you carry the baby for 9 months and you start bonding. You'll start having motherly feelings and if you complete your 9 months and you went through excruciating pain in labour, mothers usually forget about the pain during the labour, because they're happy to see their child. If you forget about THAT pain and are happy to see the child, I don't believe it could be easy to get the baby adopted.

Also, I don't believe that it's a good thing for a child to get adopted. Just look at it like this: you were adopted. How would you not feel bad? I would personally be like: "What the f... my parents didn't even want to keep me. What is wrong with me?" Then there comes the curiosity with adopted children, they want to know their roots. That's normal, but what if the mother doesn't want to contact the child? It'd be just heartbreaking for the child.

I don't have a problem with adoption, I mean, if someone adopts a kid, then they really must want it!

But I don't think I could have given up a child for adoption, unless I knew I couldn't offer it enough.
