I remember volunteering for Red Cross a few years ago, and on December 1st some friends and I stood in the middle of our town and passed out condoms as a part of their Active Choice campaign. Pretty interesting.

I hope the world one day will be freed from this sickness. So many great people have died from it. Rest in peace Freddie Mercury and all others!

Thanks for bringing this to attention Victoria. Google too have a button on their page today, where you can click and donate to different charities, which I think is a great idea for raising awareness.

Marit - well done on the volunteering. I've done money-collecting for charity before, but not sure I'd have the courage to pass out condoms! :P

I've heard word of a chairty around where I live (not sure how accurate the information is) where you volunteer nad you go and visit people with AIDs and you do things for them that they can't do themselves. Like the charity that goes and visits elderly. If it is really a charity then I'd love to volunteer.

To be honest, I've no idea what AIDs is. :-X Okay, I know it's an STD, can also be transmitted by blood, that it affects your immunesystem... but can you 'function' properly when you have AIDs? Or are there really things you can't do? Because it affects your muscles for example?

HIV is a virus that uses the genetic material from our CD4 cells to make more copies of itself. The virus likes one particular cell in our immune system called a CD4 cell or t-cell. When it uses that cell's genetic material, it damages the T-cell making it unable to do its job in our immune system. The more of these CD4 cells that are damaged, the weaker your immune system becomes. Eventually, your immune system will become so weak that it will not be able to protect you from other illnesses and infections, thus you become sick. Simply put, HIV doesn't make you sick. It weakens your immune system, allowing other illnesses and infections to make you sick.

Does that help any?

Interesting info Victoria - I knew AIDS weakened the immune system, but not the details.

I knew it does weaken your immune system, but does it make you feel really weak? Do you feel you have AIDs? I mean... I just don't know what it's like...

*Sigh*...

Seriously.. How can people still think like that, it's 2009... I know it's Africa and they're not quite as developed as we are... But seriously... this is just... I don't have words for it.
