Title: Rupert Grint in "Driving Lessons"
Post by: Storyteller on July 17, 2007, 03:32:16 pm

I really can't help but brag on this little film. It's just the kind of movie I like, I suppose, very personal, a bit quirky.
Rupert is quite wonderful in a character that is, frankly, no much different than Ron. But what suprised me, which shows that I should. pay better atention, is that Evie, the ecentric actress for whom Ben works, is played with delightful oddity by Julie Walters.

The surprise was that Miss Walters ALSO plays Molly Weasley, Rupert's on screen mom in the Harry Potter films. I've always adored Molly and now I know why Evie looked so familiar. LOL

Love this film! I just wondered who else has seen it?

Hugs,
Rach

I've seen it and I love it! Rupert is, of course, very talented, and I'm a big fan of Julie Walters, the two really have great chemistry. It is very different and quirky, and poor Ben is forced into doing so much that he doesn't want to, by his mum and Evie, like when she swallows the key when they go camping.

No, I agree, I think Ben was a bit of a deeper charcter than Ron, Ron never seems to say much or think much, but Ben was a great character.

I still liked him in 'harry potter' in fact he is my fave character in it, but I also have a soft spot for ben ;D

I think that there is a lot of the "new" Ron in Ben. In the special features, the director says that Ben spends the first third of the film barely speaking. I have a feeling that it may have effected the way Rupert plays Ron now.

I have some screen caps of "Driving Lessons" Would any one be interested in seeing them?

Hugs,
Rach

Here are a few to be going on with.

It was a WONDERFUL film, Maryd! I want to buy it for my collection. It's already become one of my favorites!

Now, a few more caps of Rupert as Ben.

I have it on video because I taped it right off the TV when it was on at Christmas. I take it you mean til the book comes out on Saturday? ;)

Yes, I mean until the book comes out. My copy is now only about 70 miles from here. If it ddoesn't get here Saturday, I'm making the claim with Amazon to get it free! LOL After Saturday, I may be a bit absent until I finish the book.

Yes, Rupert is ADORABLE in this. There's a lot of Ron Weasley in the part, but also a lot that isn't. I wish it would come on here so I could record it.

And the last of the caps. In the one with the bicycle, Ben is dressed as a tree. LOL This movie is very thoughtful but it's very funny at the same time.I want to see Rupert do more, though I suppose time is short while HP is still going...

Yes, I did like that bit where he was playing a tree..,. ;D I thought the actress that played his mother, sorry I don't remember her name, was very good.

I thought she was wonderful! As I said, she's the same actress who plays Molly Weasley in the HP films, so they've worked together before.

Hugs,
Rach - who is getting excited now and it going NO WHERE ELSE on the net

No, I meant the woman that played Ben's mum, not Julie walters who plays Evie... ::)

I've got nowhere else to go on the net either.

Oh! Laura Linney. She's an American actress but you'd never know it by the movie, would you? Yes, she was great, played just the right degree of...skewed, for lack of a better term.

Hugs,
Rach

Ah, thanks! She doesn't sound American, does she? Skewed, good word! She's a really hard-to-get character.

Hi Rach!! Is Driving Lessons available on DVD to rent? I'm a member of Netflix. My oldest daughter, who is a huge HP fan, absolutely adores Rupert Grint. She's 14 going on 15.....would the film be appropriate for her to watch?

Hi Joanie - I think it would be suitable, I think it had either a 12A rating or a 15 rating here in the UK...I'm 16 but saw the film 1st when I was 15, and my sisters aged 11 and 14 watched it too, and it was entirely suitable for them....hope that helps! :)

Joanie, there are a couple of uses of the "F" word. Other than that, there's nothing you wouldn't see on network tv. In fact, there's LESS than you see on network tv here in the states.

I rented it from Netflix. I'm sure you could get it there, too. I want to buy a copy for myself, though.

You know, the more I see of Rupert and read of HP Book 7, I think this lad's going to be a BIG star after the last movie comes out, dependong upon what they keep in and what they leave out, of course.

This morning at church, we sang "Be Thou My Vision" and I couldn't help seeing the scene with Ben in his dad's church when they sing it.

Hugs,
Rach

Thanks for the info ladies. I will put that in my queue at Netflix. I haven't finished book 7 yet, so I can't wait to see what Ron does!!

I think Driving Lessons is a very emotive film - instantly memorable. I like the scene near the beginning, I think, where Ben and Evie are in the garden reading out lines from a play. I did that one afternoon with my sister.... ::)

It's now high on my list of favorite films. I can't beleive I missed it when it came on TV here. Everyone to whom I mention it says, "Yes, I saw where that was coming on tv." How did I miss it????

I guess I don't watch tv enough.

I have to return my copy to Netflix so i'm going to have to start looking for it.

Hugs,
Rach

I bought a copy at Amazon, so I have it now. I have two Netflix movies here I need to watch, but I plan to watch it again soon.

I really can't say enough in praise of it. LOVE the ending, too!

Rach
