Title: Treasure Island
Post by: redstar1 on January 08, 2011, 05:27:08 pm

Read all about it here:

http://collider.com/elijah-wood-treasure-island/68828/

It's a TV movie that will be in two-parts, four hours. Wonder if it will come to the USA? If it does, a'hoy Sci-Fi channel! (well... that's my bet!)

It's good to see that he has been offered this role. I also wonder if it will eventually make it's way to the US at some point. It would be a shame if we couldn't see him in this. ;)

Oh man I hope it will be shown here too.

i'm actually more excited about this film than the small cameo in that "other" film. ;)

in that "other" film, elijah is in familiar territory. with treasure island, he's going to portray a character like never before, and i love to watch him take on traits he has yet to conquer.

i too hope this will go beyond the borders of the UK.

I don't know this story really, and I have no idea if his character is a main character, or not. And what he's like, his character I mean.
Can anyone help me with this?

sure! this is what i wrote about the other day.

Ben Gunn is a marooned crew mate for years on the island. While not a main player in the story, his character's deceitful ways deter others from finding the lost treasure. While Ben has been portrayed as older, I see no reason he couldn't be young. He's a bit deranged and has the look of a wild man from his solitude. He represents a degradation of the human spirit, yet his experience has left him morally superior to the pirates. He is the only character to be reformed, as he shifts sides from the pirates to the good men.

and this is how the author describes gunn in the book:

"His skin, wherever it was exposed, was burnt by the sun; even his lips were black; and his fair eyes looked quite startling in so dark a face. Of all the beggar-men that I had seen or fancied, he was the chief for raggedness. He was clothed with tatters of old ships' canvas and old sea cloth; and this extraordinary patchwork was all held together by a system of the most various and incongruous fastenings, brass buttons, bits of stick, and loops of tarry gaskin. All around his waist he wore an old brass- buckled leather belt which was the one thing solid in his whole accoutrement."

Wow, now I'm really hoping that they will air it here, or that it will be available on DVD or something. Thank you so much for explaining that. ;D

NEW YORK, February 2, 2011 - "Treasure Island," the special two-part movie event from RHI Entertainment, will premiere on Syfy, the home of imagination-based entertainment, in early 2012. Wow, two television premieres in '12. :0 Very nice!! Thanks for the new info, Deenan.

If Elijah keeps it up in television, maybe he'll land an original Hallmark movie role. ;D

it's a little confusing, but i think it will air on sky late in 2011 then make its rounds early the following year. some reports say it will originally air in 2011, some say 2012. i'm thinking it will be in 2011 since it's begun to film.

btw, hallmark is good, but i think a syfy production is better. ;)

Treasure Island is one of my favorite stories, and I've seen most of the movie adaptations. My favorite thing about Ben Gunn is his intense craving for cheese. He's been stuck on the island for years, and the first thing he asks when he sees another human soul is, do you have any cheese? (I would miss cheese, too.)

yeah, what's with ben and cheese? i like it too, but after being stuck on an island for three years, i'd rather have it wrapped around a hamburger. ;D

anyway, you guys... there's a little snippet of treasure island on you tube now and we have our first glimpse of ben! he's seen very quickly but i don't think you'll miss him.

SKY 1 PROMO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6440T9-JvsQ&feature=youtu.be")

not what i was expecting at all, but i didn't really know what to expect. ;) elijah looks amazing and from what i could tell, the movie has a fresh look to it as well.

elijah can go to the limit for his roles, but he didn't go as far to have his ears pierced. ;)

It looks very intriguing and I'll bet more interest will be generated now that it's close to release. 8)

it's very good and pretty graphic at times. it's been aired already in the UK and i believe is having multiple showings there now. the movie should be out in the US sometime this spring. you got syfy? 8)

The mini-series was fantastic! I loved the music score, and the scenery! The scenery - so beautiful! Especially the ocean. Very, very shiny.

Jim Hawkins!! :D Oh boy, was the actor who played him such a cutie. Lovely blue eyes like our 'Lijah.

Of course, this was a brand new role for Elijah!! It was fantastic. He reminded me of 7 from Shane Acker's 9. Must have been the spear and the feather. (did he have a feather?)

Ben's obsession with cheese was adorable. During the argument between Silver and the captain's first mate (Not the doctor... the other gentleman who joined the doc and Jim), you could see Ben nibbling on the cheese and reading The Bible in the background. From time to time, he glanced over his shoulder.

Although he was wild and jumpy with Tarzan dreads, Elijah's portrayal of Gunn was just... super sweet. ;D

this was a good movie! i've only seen the second part so seeing the full story was a treat. i liked how they didn't shy away from the violence, albeit mild in my opinion because pirates are known to be a ruthless breed.

i think that was the moment when ben decided to stay on the island. hearing them argue back and forth over the treasure, i don't think he wanted any part of that. it was peaceful on the island with the treasure in his possession. in the book ben went back with the crew.

eddie gave an interview recently and said there could be a sequel to the movie. perhaps they'll go back for the sunken treasure and meet up with ben gunn again. or they could do a prequel as there is another story solely about ben.

Although the prequel The Adventures of Ben Gunn wasn't written by Robert Louis Stevenson.
I really did like this show. They did change some things drastically from the book, but I didn't mind the changes too much. Got me reading the book again.

Loved Elijah's portrayal of Ben Gunn though, and with the way the characters were acting, I can see why Ben would choose to stay on the island anyway. He did a good job with the character. I only wish there was more of him in the show.

i never read the book so i didn't know how it ended until news of this movie came. seeing that some people didn't care for the changes whiles others like you didn't mind them, i wonder now if the reasoning to change the end was with the intention to make another film.

gee... i thought they showed plenty of him. ;D but i know what you mean.

I began watching this 30 min in on part I but then had some distractions at home and couldn?t devote my full attention to it. I hope they show it again. I thought Elijah?s role was minimal and wished we could have seen more of him but he did a good job with his part. 8)

I also agree that these were relatively civilized pirates.

^ Might want to take a peek at Part II if you get the chance... I hope it's on again, because Elijah's role in Part II is much greater than the beginning of Part I. :)
