Title: "9" Thread
Post by: Karin Woywod on December 19, 2006, 07:34:55 am

Hi there,

Elijah has said in this (http://www.movieseer.com/InterviewDetailBil.asp?iID=94&aID=2194&Channel=2) recently published interview :

Quote:
I have actually just finished another one [ animation role ]. It is a movie produced by Tim Burton called 9: a fascinating story about a post-apocalyptic world that should be coming out in 2008. I have just recorded the voice for it.

, we now know more details about it :

Tim Burton's next animation piece: 9
Just found out about Tim Burton's next project. He seems to be stepping back a little on this and just producing someone else's vision.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9_%28film%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9_%28film%29)

9 is an Oscar nominated short animated film about a rag-doll humanoid that fights to free the souls of his friends from a clockwork demon. It was animated in CG by Shane Acker, and Tim Burton will be adapting it into a full length feature film with Elijah Wood doing a voice for it. The full length movie is due out in 2008.

Until then, the original ten minute short film is displayed below:

I've just watched the short film version - I like it ! Can't wait to hear Elijah's voice in this kind of scenario ! :o ;) :)

This sounds great, I love Tim Burton. Thanks for the information.

Title: "Nine"?
Post by: MermaidBia on April 14, 2007, 01:23:11 pm

According to a Happy Feet-related interview, Elijah has completed the voice-acting job for yet another animated movie, supposedly directed by Tim Burton and sci-fi. Called Nine.

Anyone know more about it?

Title: Re:"Nine"?
Post by: deenan on April 15, 2007, 09:05:52 am

tim burton is the producer and shane acker directed it.

9 was released in 2005 as an animated short feature running about 10 minutes. it was nominated for an oscar. at that time, there was no dialog, but now it's being remade into a full length animated film with dialog.

Tim Burton's film (of which he is the producer, as Deenan says) is "9," though, not to be confused with the upcoming film version of the Broadway musical "Nine." Given the similar titles, it wouldn't surprise me if they ultimately re-name the animated feature. Which is a shame, really - I love when Elijah plays a title character. :)

Title: Re:"Nine"?

He plays the title :o character? *squees*

...a character called Nine? XD

Title: Re:"Nine"?
Post by: wabbit on April 18, 2007, 02:11:23 pm

Yup, "9" is the title character. :)

If you're interested, the original short by Shane Acker is available on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=964QHmjLqa0

I'm not sure how spoilery it will be for the film, as it's only 10 minutes long, and no one actually speaks in this version. But it's very cool to watch, if you don't mind the potential spoilers.

you think this is a dumb name? i hope that doesn't bother you. it's not about the name. it's about the story and the characters. :)

Of course it is, but I'm also always interested in the name. (hence my icon) I'm much better with Elijah`s respective role-name than the actual movie title. And "Nine" happens to be not a name, but a number. XD

really? i didn't know that. ;)

i like 9. it's my favorite number. no, not because of this movie, but it's my birth month. anyway, i like different names and this happens to be an animated film, so the names can be a bit more random and whimsical. :)

Watched that clip...
Wow...
If Elijah's really gonna tackle that title role in a full-length version, then my hat's off!! It looks certainly different from Happy Feet - and adds to the sheer versatility of his roles. I'm certain Elijah will bring a depth to the character of "Nine" - by giving him a voice - that equals the detail of his animation and movement. It's not even a particularly "cute" character, which signifies to me that Elijah's really above cliche type-casting. Fantastic!! *claps hands* The concepts of the vision look mindbogglingly fascinating, and the whole feel of this is so gloomy and apocalyptic...the music at the end was brilliant.

New movie on my to-see-list! Yay!!!!

Title: Re:"Nine"?
Post by: Blue Star on April 22, 2007, 01:31:14 pm

What's great is that I was actually persuaded to watch that short film, and I was blown away by it, before I ever found out it was going to be turned into a feature film, which was shortly after. I didn't know Elijah was going to be the main character! I don't know, him being main characters in animated films seems kind of cliche at this point, but it looks interesting. Way different from Happy Feet. :)

That said, I'm a little disappointed that it will have to have a traditional storyline and voices. The short film did better without those.

i've read a couple of forums and they say the same thing. sometimes it's better to leave things the way they are, but we'll see how it goes.

I can't help but be pretty excited myself! :D I mean, is there only this ten-minute short film? If it were a series of films in the same wordless style, or an animated comic of sorts, I could agree...like this, all I see is a freaking load of potential to turn this into something great. You'd have so much to expand on - who are these people, what is their world, and how did it come to be as it is? Why are these creatures fleeing and fighting those machines? (Reminded me of War of the Worlds) There's a lot of stories underneath that for someone creative, without the need to turn it into a "traditional" animated film. If they keep the follow-up of scenes as random as in the short, and the dialogue sparse and to the point, this could become awesome.
Just my two cents as someone who simply happens to love Elijah's voice-acting ;)

Looks very very interesting... I was much confused in the beginning though. What are these little things (9, 5, etc.)? Aliens? AI?

Also, what is "9" doing in the beginning... exactly?

Regardless of my major blonde moment, the character "9" looks like a very interesting character, that I think Elijah could pull off.

Which is what I'm wondering, too, hon. I think the director wants us to puzzle over this as part of the entertainment, and I'm up for a game...since the story's supposed to be post-apocalyptic (according to Lij, anyway) we have several options here:
- aliens
- humanoid aliens
- androids (though that's doubtful 'cause their movement is so natural)
- surviving humans (they might've shrunken due to some toxic waste, which would account for the giant trash everywhere and the overalls they're all wearing)

Or something completely else...

See what I mean? It's just overboarding with the potential of stories!!! ;D

I love such stuff...

since this thread hasn't been posted in for several months, it's obvious the movie hasn't come out. the release date has been pushed back to a more marketable date of september 9, 2009. 9-09-09. ;)

but there's a trailer that just came out available for viewing, and it looks awesome!

i know what you mean, but it usually takes longer on animated films. the animations are started after the voicing is done. remember when elijah did the voicing for happy feet? that was back just after LOTR was done filming, and the movie came out about 5 years later. :o

i see the trailer is now showing in movie theaters. getting a bit of a jump on things i say. ;)

i went to see the movie today. totally cool! i'll add here my little review that i posted in my LJ.

The film is vision to behold and the story pulled me in. For a spell there, I forgot I was following a group of rag dolls around. This is a tale about survival and things that need to be done to accomplish that. Dominance, fear and bravery were themes heavily throughout. I think children will like this, but if they're younger than 12 years old, the images may be too intense. I've read some say The Seamstress is frightening. Elijah thinks so as well, but I found The Brain more grisly. My growing dotage may be getting the best of me because I teared up a little on some parts.

What Shane Acker has done is have the audience follow along with 9. As he is born into a world he knows nothing about, so are we. We tag along with the same questions as he has. 9 obviously becomes the leader, convincing the others not to let things be as they are. I loved the twins 3 and 4, 2 and 5. 7 was cool too. Heck, who am I kidding? I liked them all.

i'd like to add how i loved how the dolls were very inventive. they made things from the resources that were available to them. the film being in a post apocalypse world, there's lots of debris that's used to help them along.

shane acker expanded on his short film successfully. :D

i'm glad you liked it romeny. it's good to know i wasn't the only one getting a little emotional. ;) but that's what good storytelling will do. still, some say the story is lacking, which i don't know how. it's well rounded and complete. i wonder what kind of mentality these people have not to see in a fantastic film that i saw. ::)

the movie did well at theaters this weekend taking in nearing $11 million in the states and coming in second. just what focus features had anticipated. no word on the other countries it opened in yet.

i went to see the movie again for my birthday, and enjoyed it even more. picked up on some things that were missed the first time, and though i noticed some LOTR references in the movie, i found a lot more. certain scenes, some phrases were reminiscent of LOTR. but it's still a great film all on its own.

^ I don't know about Germany Carina. It's released in the UK on Halloween so maybe a release for Europe would be around then? Here's hoping. :)

^ Not an illegal download I hope? :P

I heard on the boxie that the release date for the UK has been moved back to November but I've just checked imdb.com (hope this is reliable, lol) and it says it's the 28th October! If that's true, then not long to wait!

And Carina - sorry, but I didn't see a date at all for Germany... :( I hope you get one there though.

Interesting question...I don't really know whether it's good or bad.

it's neither good nor bad, but as you say "interesting." i don't know if elijah was aware of how alike some scenes would be to LOTR when he was recording. and let's not forget that shane worked on ROTK so he may have been somewhat influenced to put some references into his own work.

i'm sure you'll get to see it eventually carina, and then you can make your own conclusions. be that as it may, it's still stands as a wonderful film on its own. :)

Saw it twice in my theater. (on the 10th of October I went alone, and on the 11th I went with a friend-- we were the only two in the entire theater, plus two workers!)

I thought it was an amazing movie, especially Elijah's top-notch voice-acting. My favorite character out of the whole movie was 9. :3 After that comes 7, 1, and then the Twins. (I'm also a shipper for 9/7, hehe! ;D)

The movie was incredible, even if it was short. Shane Acker said there may even be a sequel in the future, but I'm not so sure. He's working on other films as we type. If there's a sequel, I hope Elijah will voice 9 again! He did a terriffic job, IMO.

I only saw it once, but I wanna see it again. I really liked it. 9 was my fav. too, definitely, cuz it's Lij! lol And the character was great.
But I missed like the first 15 mins of the movie, cuz the theatre started it early for some reason! :-\ but because of that, they gave us our tickets free! lol ;) That was cool!

It's finally out! :D Huzzah!

Bad News: It wasn't at Wal-Mart... so I couldn't buy it.

Good News: I rented it at Movie Gallery, and my father ordered it on Amazon.com! Yay!

If you watch "9 - The Long and Short" in the bonuses, it features Elijah. ^^ I think both of the versions are unique in their own way, with or without voices.

That's sad it wasn't at your Walmart! :( It was at mine. I bought it today, so happy! ;D I'm planning on watching the bonus features tonight! Thanks for the info.
