Title: Re:Ash Wednesday?
Post by: Amalthea on February 26, 2003, 06:49:37 pm

I thought the movie was alright but the role really didn't seem to suit Elijah. There wasn't any chemistry at all between Sean (Elijah) and his wife (Rosario Dawson).this could be because they hadn't seen each other in 3 years but there still didn't seem to be anything there. When Rosario Dawson was on the Conon O'Brian show after Elijah, they barely spoke to each other. That same piano tune was used thruout the movie. It
got kind of annoying. None of my family liked it. I'mexpecting a lot more from Try 17. :)

I haven't seen it. Are there lots of elijah scenes in the movie?

Title: Re:Ash Wednesday?
Post by: Amalthea on February 27, 2003, 11:46:46 am

Actually there aren't that many Elijah scenes in the movie. The movie isn't even 1 hour and 40 minutes and Elijah is shown in the first scene for about 2 minutes, not saying anything. Then for about 40 to 50 minutes the characters are saying they hear Sean (Elijah) is back from the dead but they don't show him. It was kind of annoying because his name was mentioned in every scene but we didn't see him. Finally he came into it but Edward Burns kept getting all the screen time. There was enough Elijah at the end but I thought he could have had more to work with. I'd recommend it just for a look though. The role isn't as small as Black and White or anything. Probably the same amount of scenes he had in Deep Impact ::)

i'm sorry to say it but i hate this movie!!!!!!!not offenese to those of u who like it tho, it's just my opinion

i mean, this is just a simple story, why do they made it so long?! it made the whole movie so boring becasue it kept repeating, it spent at least a half hour for the neighborhood dicussed if Sean(elijah) still exist or not...and i hate that edward burns, no one in this movie is acting good, including elijah, he doesn't even know what was he doing in some part....the story, itself just doesn't make sense at all

alright again it's just my opinion, please don't get mad at me :P

Actually if you havent seen it yet, I would discourage you from buying it. I saw it the other day, its not that great of a movie in general and Elijah has a small and rather disturbing role in it.

hi
Well to those of you who are finding films difficult to find. You can always find the on the aution site ebay. I a from uk and got 'chain of fools' the other day which is funny.

I guess it isnt the best role for Elijah but shows how he is such a good actor. It is quite funny.(hey you got to laugh)

I am still waiting to see ost of the recent movies cos they not out here in uk.

No one has mentioned the young film 'North'
You may or may not see ''elijah's '' *crack*

I like faculty too. I just wonder if Elijah will ever get a part in 'star wars' eh? He seems to like icult to find. You can always find the on the aution site ebay. I a from uk and got 'chain of fools' the other day which is funny.

I just saw this-rented it from Blockbuster. It's really good!! I recommend that you see it!
If you want to know what its about (spoiler free)-here it is:
Lij's character Sean Sullivan committed a crime to save his brother Francois (Edward Burns). Then he becomes a hunted man-so they fake his death and he leaves town. He returns to see his wife 3 years later on Ash Wednesday. The movie is all about the events of that day. Its really good.
(But its one of the first movies where I heard a priest say "What the hell?")

I watched the DVD last night....... It was a good movie, but I was hoping for a bit more "action" from Elijah, don`t get me wrong.... but it was a bit drawn out at some parts, I actually got bored... BUT then, Elijah popped in :) and then out :'(...

Put it this way, it wasn`t the best movie he`s acted in... but it was good ;) :) (That`s my opinion, don`t be mad :-[)

I saw it last night, and I loved it. But I am a fan of off beat movies, especially ones that Ed Burns writes and directs. And stars in for that matter, I love hte accent and he is pretty. Elijah is really good in it, and the story is really good. It totally feels like you stumbled into someones life for a day. Lij looks hot too. Its nice to see him as an adult in a movie and not being Frodo cuz then I dont feel like a perv for drooling over him!! ( since all this other movies he is a tad bit too young for me )

Eh. Perhaps the fact that my friends and I watched this movie at 1:00 in the morning after a rather long Elijah marathon.. but I didn't like it. I mean, yes, Elijah was fairly good in it, and looked scrumptious.. But the plot, I thought, was too long and drawn out and.. well, kind of boring! It seems everyone else has loved it though.. so maybe I'm just weird? I dunno.. just please.. don't hurt me now.

I agree, I rented the movie last week and It's a good movie and I love all the parts with Elijah :), but I expected a little more Elijah scenes. And I hoped there would be some more action.

I rented that movie a couple of weeks ago. I never would have rented it normally, but elijah was in it.

I have to disagree with the group, I hated it. It was boring, drawn out and violent. I won't watch it again.

The only 2 good things about this movie were Elijah and the soundtrack.

THANK you, crzy4elijah! Lol, finally, I don't feel like such a dork for not liking it! It WAS violent.. but I just found it more boring than anything. Sure, Elijah was yummie. But otherwise.. pshh, not worth watching another time, if you ask me.

Title: Re:ASH WEDNESDAY
Post by: Spaders55 on June 23, 2003, 05:27:50 pm

i liked it. it took a while to get into the real story. In the beginning he was just like "Sean's dead-shut up". And he knew all along that Sean was in his apartment. It was still very good though.
Francois is a shitty brother for sleeping with Sean's wife though. What an asshole!

Title: Re:ASH WEDNESDAY

Title: Re:ASH WEDNESDAY
Post by: HobbitFancier on June 24, 2003, 03:20:10 pm

There was another topic about this movie a while back. And I'll stick to what I said there. True, Elijah looked yummie in this movie, but otherwise, I downright hated it. The plot was dragged on far too much, and it was quite violent and, in my opinion, very boring. I don't think I'd watch it again, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. Plenty of people absolutely loved it! "To each his own", right? Lol.

Well, I haven't seen Ash, so I can't really comment here, but as far as I understand, the only really worthwhile part of the flick is where Lij is confronting Ed Burns about f*ck**g his wife. :)

wowzer...innit

Title: Re:I just 'watched' Ash Wednesday....
Post by: horsewomanmmr on June 25, 2003, 01:36:46 am

I have it among my DVD collection and I have watched the whole thing. And when I feel the need to see Lij get forcefull I turn on the part where Francis tells Sean (Lij) that he really f***ked up by coming back, and Sean basically tells him to f**k off because the
guys Sean shoots were out to kill Francis because of his f**king gambling debts.
The movie was gritty, and slow moving, a typical Ed Burns vehicle.
The part that I don't get is Sean's greeting to the wife he hasn't seen in 3 years. Sort of blah. In a dark van, he hugs her and meets the son he didn't know he had. Could have been better. But this was Ed Burns movie. Not Elijah's.
Another Indie movie under Elijah's belt that will disappear eventually.
I can appreciate his desire to do Indies, but why is it that the majority of the movies he has done disappear? Or go directly to video. Like Try 17. Black and White, Chain of Fools, and The Bumblebee Flies Anyway.
I don't get it. But it's his career.

Title: Re:I just 'watched' Ash Wednesday....
Post by: pilch on June 25, 2003, 01:47:45 am

EW has the luxury/integrity to do roles which interest him...not just those which will be a Hollywood success...

Actually, that's somewhat inaccurate; a fair number of his movies have been at least moderately prominent, in terms of distribution. (I think it was a surprise for everybody when Try 17 didn't get distributed...)

By his own admission, "Ash Wednesday" was an unusual movie choice -- not because of the material, though. I read in some interview that he wanted something short, after a year and a half in NZ.

Christina Ricci does the same thing, I've noticed. (On one hand we have Sleepy Hollow, on the other we have Pumpkin)

Title: Re:I just 'watched' Ash Wednesday....
Post by: horsewomanmmr on June 25, 2003, 02:33:29 am

The one thing I have always thought was great about Elijah
was his desire to do what interested him and not to go "Hollywood"
so to speak, and my comments were not ment to criticize his choices.
When your an actor as talented as he is, and your work starts to "get lost" (try going to Blockbuster or Hollywood Video and rent those movies I mentioned) it's frustrating for those who want to enjoy his work not to mention those people who have not had the benifit of being exposed to those films. His early work you can find pretty much anywhere, but his Indie work is tough to find. And I think that is a shame.

Title: Re:I just 'watched' Ash Wednesday....
Post by: JadeownerofCatBoy on June 25, 2003, 02:41:57 am

Ahh.. But there's always E-Bay, or Buy.com, or one of those places that sells all sorts of stuff on DVD.. I'm sure you'll find all Elijah movies on the net for sale.. You'd prolly even be able to get "Chain of Fools" for all we know.. neh??
It's the neatness of the internet.. Not only that! There's people who make it easier for you and they give you every scene that Elijah is on in a film that is hard to find *cough*chainoffools*cough*.. They make video files of every scene he is on! LOL.. ;D
That's what I love about the NET!!

Maybe I'm lucky, but I could get "Bumblebee" or B&W if I wanted; I haven't chosen to, that's all. Try 17 isn't available yet... and I concede that "Chain" isn't available. More's the pity -- it sounds brilliant. I think it would do well if they got off their bottoms and did something.

I do agree. it is a pity that most of the work that I'm so very interested to see is the indie work that Elijah has done.
I think that he's made some good choices, and I think that it's an artistic choice he's made, to make such movies.
But, if it's so difficult to get the above mentioned movies, I can't say it's any easier where I live. So,out of all the indie movies that was mentioned, I've only got to watch was Black n White. Which I thought was really good. And that was rare too, cos it was shown over HBO at an ungodly hour over here!
You girls have no idea how much I want to see Elijah play something else other than a hobbit for once.

Unfortunately not everyone has access to Ebay or some of these sites, because not everyone has a computer.
There is, however, a Blockbuster or Hollywood video on almost every street corner.
If they don't have these films how are they going to know he has other movies out there.
Seven, Eggo, I was reading your comments on the thread on roles we would like to see Elijah in. I agree with both of you. I hope he has the opportunity to explore other roles that can really challenge him.
I think he would be perfect as pure evil. Who would ever suspect that angelic face? When his head is shaved he can look like a real psycho.

Maby I just wasn't patient enough. It sounds like it got a lot better near the end, when he shot someone and all that. I just think movies need to have an exciting beginning too though, to keep the watcher entertained. And Elijah only had like a 30 sec part, and didn't show up till much later. There was too much time in between when they were trying to find out who the 'look-alike' was. That was what got me down.

Yeah, it starts off slow, but it gets better, and you see more of him as the film goes on. For an independant movie made my Edward Burns (Another great actor who plays Elijah's brother) I thought it was really good! ;D ;)

But it was funny seeing him holding a gun! lol i know this sounds funny but i really couldnt ever picture Elijah having a gun! And I_Love_Elijah85 He's not really on the screen as much as any of us would like! :P ;) lol I believe he is 21 or 22 (or around there) in the movie. Edward Burns plays Francise (Elijahs brother in the movie) and Rosario Dawson is in it and she plays his wife. Those are the only people in the movie that i know there names

Ok
I just watched a special on DiNero on Bravo and they showed a scene from Raging Bull where DiNero and Joe Pesci are talking, and I swear whoever made Ash Wednesday totally ripped off the lines from Raging Bull.

If you have seen both you'll recognize identical lines

The scene I am referring to in Ash Wednesday is the Scene where Elijahs Character asks his brother if he f*cked his wife.

Check out both movies at the same time and you will see they are very very alike.

I watched the movie 2 days ago.....It was different then what I expected....but still good.....It didnt show a whole lot of Lij in it....and I hated the ended (if you seen the movie...I mean the Very end)I was hoping that that wouldnt happen, and it did!WTF! I probably dont make sence 2 the people who havent seen it......Anywayz...Am I wierd to think that Lij was freakin sexy with a gun????And it didnt seen right with Rosario Dawson being his wife...i dunno why...But its a good movie if you like kinda slow...gang movies...And you like Edward Burns!(all in all, a ok movie......i give it a 7-10)!!!I still love my Elijah!!! ;D

Hey girls,

I've just seen this movie and I really got to say some things about it. I lucked out when I went to the CD store today looking for the
All I Want soundtrack, but I don't think there even IS one for the movie, which is a pity cos it's got great songs in the movie.

Anyway, back to the movie. So as not to give away any spoilers to those who haven't watched, but this just some thoughts.

Ash Wenesday was a good movie, good but not great. It was quite slow in the beginning, but once it gets onto what the main plot is about, I think that's when it starts to become tense and interesting. That's how I found it anyway. The slightly edgy camera work was excellent. It enhanced the tense, exciting, emotional, angry moments very well.
The repetitive piano music, was weird and tuneless at the start, but soon became essential in setting the mood of the movie.

Although some say it was a predictable plot, I started watching the movie, without having any idea of what it was all about. And, it was great! I felt all the worry and anger and tense moments at the right places in the movie. Really good.

So, having said this, I believe that the idea of the story is a great one. The story of how an older brother saves his only younger brother and his wife(whom he cares about, incidently), the idea itself, might have been done before. But in this movie, it comes across as about scarifice, self-denial, of love and redemption. And to me, it gets the message across clearly.

The acting was just brilliant. Edward Burns and Elijah was just great in their scenes together. They played off one anothers' parts, so well, it was just awesome to watch. Burns is fantastic, anyway.

The language is R rated, and if you don't like too much swearing, well, this isn't for you. I've never heard Elijah say F*CK before, but he said it with such fury and frustration meant behind it, that it was just brilliant, LOL despite, the whole context of it. Hee! just an obeservation! ;)

Ash Wednesday's ending leaves you shocked at first, and but it also leaves you disturbed and sad. Which is what it is meant to do, I believe.

All in all, this is a good movie. Watch it because it's good, and it has Elijah in it. Eventhough, he doesn't appear a whole lot, when he does, he's really brilliant as he always is. Great expressions as ever. And as a plus, he looks really hot, too. LOL when is he never?! ;D

I'm glad he chose to do a movie like this and I can understand why he likes indie movies with such material as Ash Wednesday. It shows his great potential as an actor as well as, it does tell a good story.

But, go watch it when you can, you might have something to say about it. :)

:) You should see Faculty, then. He screams it on more than one occasion. :) Not with fury or frustration, but the kind of adrenaline-fueled fear that just causes four-letter words to spill from your mouth.

The ending was kind of shocking, but really, once I saw what Burns did before he left apartment, I kind of new what was coming. I just didn't it would be so soon. (Trying not too give to much away, but I'm talking about how he put on Sean's hat & coat.)

Okkkk so I watched Ash Wednesday last night!

I thought it was really good. It was a different style of film. And I didn't know that it would've appealed to Elijah! Shows how much I know. L0L..

Newayzz...the movie kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn't know who would die, who wouldn't die, etc etc. And the music was such melancholy. If u watch a movie like 'Gattaca', the music is similar. It gets higher when the tension builds.

Oh yea, and Elijah has said f**k before. If u watch The Faculty he says, 'f**k u Zeke.' when they're in the Science room. ;D
Just thought i'd tell ya.

Elijah was great as the younger brother. The anger he had, the tension, and look on his face when he sees a girl is absolutely gorgeous. Even in the movies he looks like a genuine guy, it makes u wanna melt ;D

Newayzzz if u havent watchd it, make sure u check it out!!! ;D

I give it 5 stars!!!!! ;)

I liked it. I watched it a month or two ago. Does it seem weird to anyone else that Elijah's charecter, who grew up in Hell's kitchen and spent two years in Texas, has the slightly British accent he picked up in NZ? And what is up with movies with Irish Americans and the F word? I mean, at one point in the movie I tried to count, but they were saying it so fast I lost count!

Title: Re:Ash Wednesday
Post by: Caz on December 02, 2005, 05:42:45 pm

A few snippets here and there, one larger scene somewhere in the middle of the film and another, very touching scene at the end. :)

You don't see him a lot but his character is always in your mind. Or maybe that is just because I'm obssessed? ;D

Title: Re:Ash Wednesday
Post by: Blue Star on December 02, 2005, 07:30:51 pm

It takes a lot to get to see him in the beginning, but eventually he's there and he's pretty much the second main character. I'd say he's in it about half the time at least. But I haven't seen it in a while.

It's basically a gritty crime drama with lots and lots and lots of F bombs almost every other word sometimes. But past that I think it's a compelling drama with a good story. :) Rosario Dawson is very good in it, too.
