Title: Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Cristiel on August 19, 2007, 04:00:31 am

Post all the news about Sean here! No individual threads please.

Pics go in the Sean Astin Pictures thread.

Ok, I'm a bit confused but ok...

Not much Sean news right now. He's still filming in England, working on "The Color of Magic" at Pinewood Studios. what else films there that I've heard of? Bond movies? Dr Who?....Something...

Sean did finally have to cancel his appearance at the fan convention in Toronto as well as the one in Atlanta. Once he had cancelled Atlanta, I KNEW that was coming. It's the week before DragonCon.

Is anyone watching the new season of Meerkat Manor? Sean is great as always. His narration, the fact that he ACTS the story instead of just telling it, makes the program, as far as I'm concerned, though the writing is good as well.

I'm on the lookout for pics from "The Color of Magic" but I haven't found anything yet. I'll let you know when I do.

Just saw this. Sean and ďhis petĒ (Iíve no idea which one) will appear on a new calendar from the PDSA, an organization in England that helps animals .

Thanks to my friend, Belleferret, for the last bit.

I plan to post more of the caps from Where the Day Takes You but this change of locations has me a bit confused. I'm not exactly sure where it should be. As soon as I find out, I'll let you all know.

Hugs,
Rach

I just don't want to be breaking the rules.

Well, this thread already exists, as does the thread for "Watchbird.". I think she meant for members to not create more "general" Sean threads. I don't know where the threads are at the moment for Sean in "The Final Season" and "The Colour of Magic," but they should be here with the other Sean threads. At least that's my interpretation. I'll check.

I saw this at TORn. Apparently, Sean is going to The World Series of Video Games in Toronto next week.

I'm afraid not, Celebrian. He had to cancel that because he's filming in London.

I noticed a couple of these notices floating around. Apparently not everyone got the memo LOL

Ok...I am a tad bit confused. :-\ What happened to the other General Sean Thread? I went to post an entry and found the thread had been locked. Did it get to big? Is this where we all reside now? I just don't want to lose my connection with my fellow Sean Astin fans. :D

See what happens when I stay offline too much. ;)

Celebrian, I saw that article on TORN too. I was scratching my head a bit because I thought it was cancelled. Then I thought maybe his schedule changes. :) Hee hee...nice to have things clarified once again.

Thanks so much, folks!

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Cristiel on August 21, 2007, 03:03:27 am

OK, let me clarify a few things...

What we want to accomplish with these "general" threads is that we get rid of all the "interview with Sean in magazine X" and "Sean on Jay Leno" threads. These all belong here.

We still do allow separate threads for each film.

Pictures belong in the picture thread, screencaps either in the respective film thread (if it's movie caps) or in this thread (if it's caps from tv appearances).

And yes, the previous thread was locked because it's too big. As of now, threads with more than 100 pages will be locked and a new one will be started.

I hope this makes things a bit more clear :)

It does, Crisitiel, and thank you. We just want to do what makes it easier on the mods. I've modded and had my own board and I understand the work involved.

Culpie, obviously you found this thread and I'm glad.

Now, back to Seannie!

Rach

The good thing here too is we don't have to struggle so hard now to keep Sean on pp 1; also it used to be the 10 word rule didn't apply to the old thread & posting didn't affect your numbers either but I would imagine that might have changed now.

Yes I see the post count did change.

This thread will always stay on page one because it's a "sticky" thread (locked in place.)

How about that folks! The Sean thread got too big. Wahoo! That means lots and lots of posting!

And yes, Rach, I did find ya all...kinda stumbled into it. Ahhhhh...

Ok...enough general babble from me...back to Sean. :)

Well, I'm a bit embarassed because since they moved the thread here, there has been NO SEAN NEWS whatsoever! He's still in England shooting, as far as I know. DragonCon is this weekend and of course he won't be there (but I will be!)

I just wanted you all to know that I haven't forgotten you and as soon as there's more Sean news, you'll be the first to know!

GOod news, via Yeux. Sean's series Jeremiah is going to syndication! This means almost everyone will get the chance to see it!

This one is a MUST see! Run, don't walk to you tv set! This is one of Sean's strongest performances and most memorable characters. DO NOT MISS THIS!!!!!!

I'll update when I hear anything datewise.

A couple of other bits. A new CBS reality series "Kids' Nation" is likened to Sean's movie White Water Summer in this blurb.

Everyone up in arms about Kid Nation needs to relax for a second. The fact is it was irresponsible of CBS to create and produce the show the way they did, and it was at least as irresponsible of the parents who sent their kids packing (which reminds me of a movie with Kevin Bacon called White Water Summer, co-starring Sean Astin. Thereís a scene when Bacon recruits Astinís parents to let their son join him at camp, and Astin just knows the guy isnít right. Thatís how I imagine it going for some of the kids involved with CBS

The full article is here:

And mention is made of the release of The Final Season one this site.

We leave tomorrow for our Labor Day weekend trip so I'll catach you when I get back on Monday.

have a great holiday all!

I can't wait to see it, I guess this means it'll be on a regular TV station, not just on cable, right?

The thing with Kids Nation is that although the producers needed to have parental consent, a lot of parents don't always act in their children's best interest. I haven't seen the show though so maybe it's won't be as bad as it sounds. I'm eager for any news about TFS too.

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on September 01, 2007, 08:12:47 am

You're right, Romeny. A lot of parents DON'T act in their children's best interest, which really sad. I wonder about people's priorities sometimes. *shakes head

Anyway, I am at my daughter's in Atlanta and am using her computer so please forgive me for not having all my resources at hand. I do have a bit of Sean news, and I have to admit that I'm excited about it.

Apparently, Sean has changed talent agencies, ie, he has a new agent. I am HOPING this is going to help him get more and better parts than some of the things he has had recently, like that dreadful role on "My Name is Earl". (Sorry to any Earl fans out there.) This new agency, called "Fortitude", claims to be something revolutionary in the control the actor has over the parts he or she applies for. I'm not EXACTLY sure what that means, but it certainly sounds like it could be good for Sean. Maybe we can see him back in some of the dramatic roles in which he shines. I have my fingers crossed.

I'm sorry I can't post the links to these articles (I saw several of them) but I don't have easy access on this computer.

Everything looks like a go for the release of "Borderland" this month and "The Final Season" in mid-October.

Have a happy Labor Day!

Hugs,
Rach

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on September 01, 2007, 05:42:42 pm

I really can't say for sure. They all change agents now and then. All I know is that *I* haven't been happy with some of the roles Sean has done over the last couple of years. He has done some EXCELLENT things, but he has also done some things that *I* thought were beneath him.

This new company he has signed with takes a new approach to representation, or so the articles say, letting the actor become more involved in his or her career. I know this is right up Sean's alley. He likes to be involved and is a self-admitted control freak. LOL

But we love him for it! LOL

Oh, and the pet calendar I reported earlier that Sean would appear in with one of his pets will feature Sean with his Chinchilla, Luigi.

I knew he had cats, a dog, etc, but I had no idea that he also had a chinchilla.

Hugs,
Rach

Uhmm, could be, but not necessarily. More likely it will be on one of the basic cable channels like TBS, TNT, USA, A&E for example. These are the stations everyone who has cable gets with even the least expensive package. They air a lot of syndicated shows. I don't think the major broadcast networks do much with syndication anymore.

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on September 02, 2007, 07:52:52 am

I don't know what channels will buy it, but I DO know that the SciFi Channel was interested at one time. Sean is NOT in the first season of the show, but that is STILL worth watching.

I'm kind of surprised it even qualifies for syndication since there are only two seasons worth of episodes. I thought you had to have three seasons, but I'm very glad I was wrong!

Every Sean fan, or even slightly interested person, should SEE THIS!
It's some of the best tv ever made!

Rach

Howdy hey, everyone! :D I had to come and get updated on the Sean news. ;) Thanks so much, Rach for the updates!

Kid Nation? Good heavens....I am still scratching my head over this one. I am refraining from speaking my mind on this one. ;) All I will say is geezzzz...what next? Gladiators? ::)

It is really neat that Jeremiah will be syndicated. I didn't know anything about it until I found the Sean thread...and by that time it was WAY too late. Only two seasons exist? I wonder if it will be more popular now. Wouldn't that be a hoot? Just imagine if the popularity took off with this syndication. ;D

Very interesting that Sean changed agents...it will be interested to see where he goes now.

Toodles!

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on September 04, 2007, 08:41:45 am

I hope the agent change will mean that we will see MORE of our favorite guy! Obviously he was unhappy with his former representation and I can't say I blame him. Hopefully, we'll get larger doses of Seanness and more frequent ones soon.

While I was gone, I also received a notice that the new Goonies movie will be animated. At least this is the latest consideration. I assume this means that Sean will be doing the voice of the adult Mikey, but that is just my speculation.

Wow, that is news, I wonder why they'd make a change like that! If that's true, they really could use any actor, not necessarily the ones that played in the previous movie. Maybe they like the idea of another Goonies and want to put the money in updated graphics and technology instead of actor salaries. I'd rather see a real person sequel.

Sean can do any character he chooses, and has. It's a bit frustrating to his fans to hear people say he's "just a hobbit" or only plays nice guys. We know better!

Borderland isn't a movie I would normally watch, but I'm looking forward to seeing Sean do something the general public doesn't expect.

Actually I thought Sean was the only actor I was familiar with before LOTR through Rudy but I realize now Iíd seen Ian M, Viggo M and some others in mostly minor roles beforehand. Iíve learned a lot about Seanís work through this site, which has been great; good actors donít come out of thin air, theyíve been around quite a bit.

You know, I hesitate to talk about a "gifted" or "talented" actor. I am afraid that it trivializes the work factor in the parts Sean and the other actors play. I am intrigued by the entire process that goes on BEFORE an actor walks on to a stage or set. THAT'S what I would like to hear Sean, or Lij, or any of the actors I enjoy talk about.

Frankly, I'm more interested in that than I am in their favorite color or junk food. LOL

You're exactly right the process IS intriguing; I always loved the original Star Wars movies and got my hands on a Ďmaking ofí video that I watched over and over even thought it was frustrating that I didnít hear enough from the actors pov. LOTR was the first movie that I was able to see and hear from the actors beforehand and I watched the appendices dozens more times than the movies. We never really heard enough however how they actually prepare themselves mentally for playing their scenes and how some of their earlier roles might have helped them.

I absolutely LOVED the bonus material on LOTR too! It is something I watch fairly frequently. You learn so much about the work behind the work...if that makes sense. How I would love to see more extras come out!

Ooooo...that Borderland picture is very SPOOKY. I am afraid it will be a little too grim for me. I am SUCH a wuss. ;)

Iím a wuss too Culpie but some true crime movies are excellent; itís fascinating to watch how the detectives solve the crime. I loved Helter Skelter, In Cold Blood, The Boston Strangler, Fargo and Deadly Matrimony, just to name a few. Hopefully the focus will be on solving the crime, not the gruesome details of the killings.

I'm a wuss as well, with the world's weakest stomach. There are even parts of LOTR that are too bloody for my taste. I have NO IDEA how I'm going to make it through this film but I'm determined to do it! The critics say that Sean's portrayal of Randall is the reason to watch the film. I can't let THAT go! LOL

I'll also have to own it, of course....Oh dear. I hate buying films I'll never watch again, but for Sean, anything.

Sean's coming home!!!!!!!

According to my friend Belleferret, principle shooting on "The Colour of Magic" ends Sept. 29th. This means that Sean should be home for the release of The Final Season and we will hopefully see him doing promotional stints on the talk show circuit!

*tunes up her dvr

Actually, I've just gotten news that Sean will be a guest for a performance of a children's theater group on the 22nd, so he's either already home or will be tomorrow!

You're not the only one rooting for this movie Culpie. It will be great to see Sean doing a lot of publicity for this and to see it become a big hit! (Shhh...I don't want to jinx anything).

We're all rooting for it, Romeny! Now that he's home, hopefully he can help promote it, as you say. I would kind of like to see him now, since he's been away so long.

I just found three early Sean clips, including the safe boating PSA filmed when he was about three years old!

The safe boating. He's the one on the stern who throws the life preserver overboard! LOL

From a 1980 Jerry Lewis Telethon. Sean is at the beginning with Patty, John and Mack.

Last season, Meerkat Manor (which Sean narrates BRILLIANTLY!) was getting a lot of flack for sugar-coating the lives of the cute little creatures. They've stopped now. Here's an intereting review of the result.

We would always watch animal shows on public TV, which shows the complete life cycle, but Iíve never seen an on-going series. Meerkat Manor is different because it stays with the same group all season so it would be easy to become attached to these creatures. And like any of these shows, narration is important; Sean helps make the show good. (Great mention of him and Encino Man btw).

Unless Iím reading it wrong the first article from 10-5 Sean is saying that he has a lot of ideas for the sequel but that no one talked with him yet while in the second from 10-8 it sounds like heís being consulted. That's a great article; it's intereresting to read that Sean needed a stand-in because this didn't seem like the sort of movie to require one but I can see for lighting, sound and such. Marxen had such nice words for Sean too and was fortunate to wk along side his idol.

I hate to say this but it sounds as if the director is taking the lazy way out. Iíve seen enough true crime pictures that if the movie is done subtly with emphasis on the detective work and light on the killings, they are really interesting and watchable. With even Sean saying the movie is disgusting and for the "Saw" crowd, I donít know about this one.

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on October 13, 2007, 10:15:09 am

I think you're right, Romeny. It sounded to me as if Sean didn't realize how gory this was going to be. It's TOTALLY understandable since all these things are added via computer later. All he saw was a blue screen and technological gadgets so the full impact didn't hit him when he was doing it. His "I'm glad I did it." sounded like something he felt he had to say. This IS his job and he can't be heard to say bad things about the film. I think he simply didn't realize what it was going to be.

He saw a chance to play something completely different and did it to show people he could. Now, seeing the finished product, I feel he kind of wishes he hadn't. I'm sure most actors have done that at one time or another.
Hugs,
Rach

I got the impression he was disappointed in the final result and you're right Sean probably jumped at the chance to play 'the bad guy' for a change. His careful understatement says a lot about what he thinks of the movie.

Well, I liked it, in part because it was filmed about 40 miles from my home! It's about a family of three brothers in a small town in the southern US (the town is actually part of Manning, SC). Whether I think it is one of his best depends upon what you're looking for. His acting is wonderful, warm and comic, and even baleful, in moments. I think you'll enjoy it.

While you are watching, make note of the athletic banners and calendars about the boys' rooms. You will see they contain a red "C" and a character that looks like chicken (it's actually a gamecock). Those are the symbols of my husband's alma mater, the University of South Carolina. apparently, the film maker was a fan. LOL

Somewhere I have the production notes from that film. A friend of mine bought them on eBay and shared them. I wonder where I put them.....

Yes. I guess it IS one of his better films, though not LOTR by any means, or even "Where the Day Takes You". I'd put it right under "Toy Soldiers", I think. I'd like to know what you think since you aren't from the southeastern US, though.

Hugs,
Rach

Elizabeth, glad you liked "Staying Together". I thought it was good. Dermot Mulroney also played King in WTDTY with Sean.

Culpie, yeah, I guess Oso does look a little like Sean. Cartoon characters DO sometimes look like their voices. But Sean is much thinner than Oso now. Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2

Some time before the strike went into effect, I read that animation writers were NOT in the WGA, but that they would most likely honor whatever the WGA members did....in sympathy, so to speak.

The animated show "Family Guy" is off the air until there's a settlement, so my guess is the animation writers ARE involved. I've been reading articles every day in Variety about the strike and it's repercussions. If I see more about animation writers, I'll let you know.

Sean is very union engaged (his mom was the president of SAG for several years) so he would probably honor the picket lines.
TV is so bad right now that I'm not overly upset by this. LOL I will only miss Heroes, really.

Thanks for the AFI link, Rach. Interesting. :D I sometimes complain that they show too many movies at school, although this looked rather different in terms of teaching the kids how to do filmmaking.

And, most Broadway shows that aim toward kids, as I think Goonies would, are musicals, so I'd kind of expect it to lean that way. Not sure it's a good idea, mind you, but that would be my hunch. :)

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Culpie on November 11, 2007, 12:51:03 am

I don't watch too much tv so haven't been paying too much attention to the strike. However, I did wonder if striking is a good idea. Most folks seem to agree that tv is pretty lame at the moment (with the exception of a few shows like Heros and so on). It seems to me that the viewers will get out of the habit of watching the shows and might find other things to occupy their time. especially with Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year right around the corner... But that is just my humble opinion. ;D

Gosh...I wonder what projects will be coming up for Sean in the future. ???

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on November 11, 2007, 08:33:22 am

That's pretty much what happened the last time the writers went on strike. People abandonded tv in droves and many never came back.

The interesting thing to me is that they have done this during the holiday season when many shows go on hiatus anyway. We really won't feel much until after Christmas, and maybe even New Years!

I just hope Sean will go do something else while they are striking, if his show is affected.

Rach

I wonder about Meerkat Manor. Or maybe that's the show you're referring to. I didn't read all the comments.

I suppose you know the stagehands in NYC are on strike, too, so none of the Broadway shows are playing. How sad for people who are planning trips to NYC. Such a trip almost always includes going to see a Broadwy show.

I was referring to "Special Agent Oso", Sean's new animated series. I read somewhere that most animation writers weren't effected so maybe that's going on.

I don't know about Meerkat Manor. They don't start a new series until next summer, though, so I would think it has a little cushion before it feels the pinch.

Hugs,
Rach

True. And if the strike lasts that long, TV as we know it will be dead in the water.

It's sad when you think about all the people effected, not only the writers but everyone, costume and set designers, make-up people, not to mention viewers. What you say about Broadway is so true; lots of people cap off a NYC shopping trip by catching a play. Think of the ripple effect on businesses, transportation people, restaurants, shops, etc...So many people all around get hurt by a strike. :(

Belle posted a YouTube video of actors out picketing to support the writers strike. Sean was one of them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZBS3ZP-Rlg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZBS3ZP-Rlg)
He's well in, and just says that he would be nothing without the writers.

I personally think Sean could act just fine with no words, but you'd still need writers for storylines.

Rach

Thanks for the youtube link. Sean says he's useless without the writers, but doesn't mention writing himself (though other actors do). I know he said he and Christine are working on adapting Number the Stars. Has he done writing before?

He writes poetry, and has produced and created the concepts of movies but I don't think he is a member of WGA. He IS a member of both SAG and DGA.

Oooo...I didn't even think about the Broadway, Yeux. How right you are...boy, that would be sad for those visiting NYC. When I went last year with my brother and sister-in-law we saw two shows and loved them! ;D It is something definitely to do when visiting NY.

Maybe the strike will be a good thing all around or at least in the long run. Perhaps it might inspire more creativity. There have been quite few movies I have seen lately that really lack a good storyline...even though the actors/actresses' performace were good. However, I do feel bad for those not associated with strike whose businesses are suffering...especially during the holidays. :-\

Wow...I forgot how many things a writer's strike could affect in the long run. Good thing Meerkat Manor is set until the summer. :D

Do you think that Sean is planning and leaning towards directing and producing more than acting in the future? I kinda wondered since he doesn't seem to have a lot on the docket these days.

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on November 18, 2007, 05:06:32 pm

Well, he actually IS rather busy. He will have to do more Meerkat Manor, of course, and is (or was until the strike) voicing Special Agent Oso. He and his wife are adapting a children's book for their own production company.

Ok, that's a weird thought. What if you are a writer working for your own production company? Would you strike against yourself????

I don't think I can get my head around that... LOL

Hugs,
Rach

I don't understand it either. ;D However, I am really curious about the adaptation they are doing for their production company. It must be fun...even though I am sure it is a TON of work.

I think whatever is done behind the scenes, it looks as if all writers (and actors) are publicly showing solidarity; it could have negative consequences for them down the road otherwise. ;)

No, it's not a strange request at all. On Christmas night there was a repeat of that 2002 show. I watched it, but didn't save it. If Storyteller sees your request, I'm sure she saved it and can upload for you the part where Sean appeared. Sean was wonderful on this show....one of his best TV appearances in my opinion.

I saw it but I didn't save it because I already have it somewhere. I'll look about and see if I can find it.

It's one I distinctly remember because I talked with a friend at the time about how Sean fussed at Jay for giving Elijah a hard time about being homeschooled. Jay had said things to E like, "What's the prom? You get in a limo and drive around the block?"

I was proud of Sean for standing up for Elijah!

It's symbolic with both Rudy's being considered underdogs and all and for a good cause but it's amazing what politicians do to get votes. Also personally for Sean if he's not a Republician or Guliani supporter, he might not like the implications. Guliani had to get permission from someone in Sean's camp, I would think.

Yes, Sean DID direct that episode of Angel, the one called "Souless". I have it on disc somewhere.

Romeny, Sean is not Republican, so I assume he's not a Guliani supporter. Everytime the guy comes on tv and they are playing the music from the film, "Rudy", my hubby and I HAVE to laugh and wonder what Sean thinks of it. I'm assuming he isn't happy about it, but I could be wrong.
As I said, this is totally an assumption on my part.

*feels pathetic*

I went to the Color of Magic site and when I was reading things like bios or interviews that went down longer than the snippet of a page I could see, I couldn't get it to scroll down. I tried several things. Anyway, the site looks nice, but is a bit too slow to load and the home page misspelled A'Tuin (they had it as A'Turin) and that does not impress me. . .

It is a neat looking site, but a little hard to manuever (probably due to the speed of my connection). I tried to access the video interview with Sean, it loaded and then nothing happened. When I went back in it wouldn't let me select that feature again. :'(

I will try again tomorrow.

It was nice to be able to read the synopis though. Thanks so much for sharing the website, Rach! I am sure it will work good the next time I try it. ;D

I'm used to sites with misspellings so it doesn't bother me. The book of essays I've just finished at one point spells "Gandalf" as "Gandolf" so I didn't even notice.

It's weird that everyone else finds the site so slow. It works just fine for me. The wand's a bit of a weird pointer but I've seen those on HP sites and am kind of used to them, I suppose.

I'm sure he's had a very happy day. He's on the campaign trail with Hillary Clinton.

Here's the link:

http://trailblazers.beloblog.com/archives/2008/02/clinton-wins-the-goonie-vote.html (http://trailblazers.beloblog.com/archives/2008/02/clinton-wins-the-goonie-vote.html)

AUSTIN, TX - Actor and Activist Sean Astin today endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. In addition to his distinguished work as an award winning actor starring in the 'Lord of the Rings', Sean has dedicated his time to public service.

During President Clinton's first term, in 1995 he was appointed by then Secretary of the Army Togo D. West Jr., as his Civilian Aid from Central California and Los Angeles. Primary responsibilities for the post include attending one national and one regional conference a year. Mr. Astin served five full two-year terms, completing a rewarding 10-year association with the Army in 2005. Sean Astin was also appointed by George Bush to the Bi-Partisan/Non-Partisan Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation. The mission of the council is to "Promote a Culture of Volunteerism and Civic Engagement."

"I believe deeply in my heart that our country can only be good and will only remain great if its citizens actively participate in the life of our Nation. Senator Clinton understands this essential idea and through her work has been an incredible inspiration for young Americans across the nation," said Sean Astin. "Instead of working at a high paying law firm after law school, Senator Clinton began down a 35 year path of public service fighting for families and children. That is the type of president we need and I am proud to tour Texas on her behalf."

"Sean has been an incredible public servant and serves as an example for young people everywhere," said Senator Clinton. "I am thrilled to have his support as we work together to right the wrongs of the Bush administration and provide Americans the solutions they need."

Sean Astin will begin a four day tour of the Lone Star State today attending an "Our Voice Our Future" event with Chelsea Clinton in San Marcos to promote early vote and a rally with Hillary supporters in Austin.

Thanks to my friend, Belleferret for cluing us in. I figured he'd be working for someone eventually.

Sean Astin will begin a four day tour of the Lone Star State today attending an "Our Voice Our Future" event with Chelsea Clinton in San Marcos to promote early vote and a rally with Hillary supporters in Austin.

That's interesting...I wonder if he approached the campaign or if they reached out to him or just Hollywood in general. I've heard before he wants to be into politics. Thanks for the info Rach.

I think he went to a Clinton rally and decided to become involved. I'm sure they grabbed his endorsement with both hands considering his name recognition.

In her book, his mom says that when Sean was two, they would be on airplanes and he would spend the flight going up and down the isles talking to people and saying, "My name is Sean and I'm running for mayor. Will you vote for me?"

How cute is that?

I guess even then he was destined to play Sam Gamgee, who was Mayor of the Shire for almost 50 years.

Rach

This reporter manages somehow to write a nice little article about Sean's campaign trail in Texas, even of the computer keyboard she was using was a bit...drool covered....

AND

I'm listening to an interview with Sean in Texas right now. He thought his epsiode of L&O would be last night, but it wasn't. In it, he will play a minister who is amassing a "Christian" army when one of the members kills someone. The episode is an examination of the dangers of religious extremism.

That's great that he got to mention a little of his work while on the campaign trail. ;) It looks like each candidate has their own set of celebrity supporters. For me I'd be ecstatic to be so close the the campaign & candidate, especially if I really admired the person.

Does anyone know who Elijah supports?

I remember in one of the Spanish-translated interviews that were done when Elijah was promoting OM he was asked about that and said he wasn't certain, then said "maybe Obama" and said he hadn't really thought about it. I could try to find the link if you really wanted.

Goodness no! Don't go to all that trouble for me. I was just curious. It's really none of my business, when you come right down to it.

Sean was on Larry King last night, still campaigning for Hillary Clinton. He looked tired and got a bit frustrated at one point.

He got frustrated when the actor supporting Obama commented about Senator Clinton voting for invading Iraq (which oddly enough, even the McCain supporter on the panel thought was a mistake, odd that). Sean said Mrs. Clinton made the best decision she could with the information she was given at the time, which has since been found to have been in error.

I'm sure she did. I'm not going to open that can of worms.

I couldn't figure out why someone was removing your insides. LOL

Isn't it interesting how different the same language can be?

Gutted is a term for the young generation. lol I remember Elijah used it when he heard he'd missed seeing Billy Boyd by one day, said he was "gutted." :D

On the news yesterday they showed exerts of Chelsea Clinton's appearances and I was keeping my eyes peeled for Sean sightings but didn't see him. I hadn't heard any criticism either.

Well, he had to be in NY for Larry King, and he has to go to England some time soon for the preimiere of "The Colour of Magic" so I assume he's left the campaign trail, at least for the time being.
Thanks for the explanation of "gutted". I can see how it could be used in that context now.

Well, here's a little general update.

Sean's animated series "Special Agent Oso" should be showing soon on Disney. I'll keep checking for it to appear on my Guide.

I'm assuming you all saw Sean on "Law and Order". WONDERFUL! FInally a part worthy of his talent!

There is a new project called "Spirirt of the Forest" listed on his site but I am still looking for info on that.

His movie "Forever Strong" is due for release this summer, I believe.

"The Final Season" comes to DVD April 15th.

We'll get new episodes of Meerkat Manor starting in June in the US.

And as always...thanks Rach for keeping us posted. I actually forgot that the taping of Meerkat manner had stopped during the writers' strike. I usually catch the episode online since I don't watch much tv. It is nice to know the new ones are coming! :D

Special Agent Oso sounds so cute! I bet my nephews will like it.

I was able to view the episode from a friend's tape last night. I like those crime shows anyway and Sean played an excellent role; I just felt that I wanted to see more of him. ;)

I've been thinking Sean could carry a TV show himself either a comedy or drama, I can't decide but he's quite versatle. I wonder if he'd be interested in something like that.

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2

It certainly would be nice to see him a little more often. How neat it would be to see him on a regular TV series. I might actually start watching TV again. ;D

It is kind of funny. LOTR was such a HUGE hit. Now when some of our fav stars are in other movies - I am disappointed that their movies don't generate a lot of interest with the "fan rags". They really do seem to neglect the good actors and actresses in favor of the Lindsay Lohans and the like. Grrrrrr! Sean's latest never even came to our town. :'(

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on April 15, 2008, 08:31:18 am

I think the fan rags thing comes and goes, Culpie, with whomever is "hot" at the moment. It's sad, really, because the LOTR fams tend to be VERY faithful, in my experience. Our interest in our hobbit lads doesn't die.

Speaking of our hobbit lads, here's a bit about Sean's latest movie venture, and he even likens it to LOTR.

Just wanted to let you know that Sean will NOT be narrating Meerkat Manor this summer. They decided to bring in a female narrator for what is supposed to be the last season. My feeling is they decided, since the show is ending, not to pay Sean's asking price since the ratings didn't matter.

Just my idea. If they wanted it renewed, they've made a BIG mistake. I won't bother with it if Sean isn't narrating. his voice made it what it was.

Oh how disappointing! :'( I bet you are right, Rach. Can't say I am too interested in it now that Sean won't be narrator. :-\ He really did make the show.

I wonder if Flower's death effected how people viewed the show? Just a random thought. I remember how shocked I was about the reaction of some of the viewers.

Oh well...I bet something better is coming for Sean. I would LOVE to see him in a mystery....not a gore fest...but a good ole suspense thriller.

Again, there are WAY too many articles that mention Sean right now to post, but I like to bring the occassional one to the fore. This was a particularly good one, I thought, and had a lovely pic of Sean. He looks a bit tored but who can blame him, the way he's been campaigning for over a month.

I hope you are right about no slapstick (which i also hate). Bell also described a role Sean mentioned as possible in a recent radio interview (I didn't hear that one). he said he might be playing a 300 lb gay man with a Black woman trapped inside which sounds rather too much to me.

Of course, if anyone can do it, Sean can.

Unfortunately, the nominations are out and Sean wasn't listed.

grumblegrumble "fixed" grumble grumble

I sometimes wonder if the pure scope of the LOTR movies hasn't somehow turned against these guys and made it more difficult for them to get awards, or even WORK, at times. It would be a terrible thing if their outstanding work in these three great films actually damages their careers instead of enhancing it.

Rach

Hmmm... good point. It's the old Mark Hamill syndrome again perhaps? :P :-\

BUT, the trilogy certainly didn't harm the career of actors such as Cate Blanchett and Viggo Mortensen who have gone from strength to strength, :) or even actors such as Dom Monaghan, who was a virtual unknown before LOTR.

Some of the others seem to still be struggling to break through to the 'big-time' :P.. if that is indeed what they are after. :-\ Elijah for one sometimes appears to enjoy keeping a low profile for the most part, and his heart seems to be more in the music industry than the film industry, and likewise with the company he keeps. 8)

Sean has always been ambitious (yes, I've read his book ;)) and is probably aiming to secure more high profile roles and recognition, but we must remember that unlike, say Viggo, or even Sean Bean, some of the other LOTR boys don't really have the qualities of a classic 'leading man', so they are unlikely to star in blockbusters etc. :-X

Having said this, if their output, no matter how small of 'low-profile' is extraordinary in quality they should be recognised with the appropriate award nominations and accolades! :D

I don't think LOTR has worked against the actors as far as them getting work but the reality of it is that short male actors just aren't as much in demand as taller ones. PJ was only hiring hobbit actors from 5'4" to 5'7" in the first place due to the scale issue. I do think that if Sean and Elijah were taller, they'd be offered better roles.

As far as awards go I will never understand why SA and EW weren't even nominated for LOTR and for post-LOTR work as well. Something is working against them.

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Storyteller on June 09, 2008, 07:45:47 am

Sean wants better parts, serious parts, but mostly, he wants to support his family and one day be making more films himself. There's nothing wrong with that. The part I hate is the silly height thing. Tom Cruise is as short as the hobbit lads and has gotten LOTS of leading roles in spite of the fact that he is, in my opinion, far less talented.

I heard somewhere that Elijah was unhappy about the lack of quality parts, too. Not sure who told me. It was an article pointed out to me by one of my friends.

The thing is, Sean is fully recognized in Hollywood as one of the most respected actors of his generation. It's almost as if appearance goes before talent in this industry, something that is simply JUVENILE! No wonder that in spite of having 500+ channels on my tv, I am hard pressed to find anything to watch.

I think that EW and SA weren't nominated for LOTR was one of two reasons.

1. The films featured such a strong ensemble cast that it was difficult to single out anyone.
2. People who don't get fantasy (who think it is only for children) could not bring themselves to vote for actors playing non-human characters.

I hope it's the former, but I'm afraid it was the latter.
*sigh

As to Viggo and Cate. Both are talented but looks-wise, I guess neither of them particularly fit my aesthetic taste. SA and EW both beat them all hollow!

It's all a matter of opinion.

Hugs,
Rach

It wasn't for a movie role. Has Sean ever worn a beard in a movie role, outside of Safe Passage and I KNOW it was after that. Oh and Detterrence, but again, this is WAY after that.

So happy that I can come back in and second Romeny's Wahoo with mine! WAHOO! Fingers are crossed as well as toes. ;)

Don't laugh...but I just saw Sean playing the role of the murderer in Monk. My nephews wanted me to watch the Monk series and had me borrow seasons 1 - 5. Even though I remembered you all mentioning Sean taking part....it still caught me by surprise when he appeared in the episode. :D I enjoyed it. Now I just have to see the L&O episode. ;)

As always, thanks Rach for keeping us up to date! ;D

It's funny when I watched to LOTR movies, Sean was the only one I remembered seeing in somenthing before and Rudy was the movie. ;) I've since realized I had seen some of the others including Viggo in Witness but would have missed him in that if someone hadn't pointed out the scene.

Well, Sean's new film "Staying Cool" is supposed to start filming this month in Santa Clarita, California, just a few miles from where Sean lives. I'm sure he will love that! Half of Hollywood seems to be in it.

It's being made byt the people who did The Astronaunt Farmer. Has anyone here seen that?

Oh, and I forgot. On July 10th, the Sci Fi Channel will start showing Jeremiah. Sean's season starts August 14th. Here's your chance to see Sean in one of his greatest roles! Be there or be square!

Oh, I will! I was going to ask if anyone here got to see it last night. Sean's episodes don't start until August, so you have time, though.

As to keeping up with his activities, that's easy peazy. All you have to do is set up an alert under his name at Google and Yahoo and it comes right to your computer. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have friends who keep up with things, too.

Yes, I think it was. When Sean first mentioned the role, he said the character weighed "300 lbs". I'm just glad that was modified.

Actually, in the face, he looks thinner than he did on the campaign trail.

Did anyone see the mention of Meerkat Manor in this week's Parade Magazine Personality Parade section? The questioner wanted to know why they replaced Sean with Channing & the answer was the producers preferred having a female voice narrate as meerkats are a matriarchal society.

Uh huhÖI guess that explains why Sean did it for two seasons. ???

Title: Re:Everything Sean Astin - Part 2
Post by: Culpie on August 24, 2008, 05:15:52 pm

Heh heh! I LOVE that reason, Romeny. ;) Besides...even if it were true...who says that you have to pick the sex of the narrator based on the structure of the animal's living structure? :-\ Seems to be the focus should be on how well a person can tell the story.

Of course, we know why they replaced Sean. It had to be over money. ;D If it was any other reason, i.e. Sean didn't have time, etc. they would have said that....Too funny! :)

Any more information about Meerkat Manor? I thought this was going to be the last season.

What I heard was that they wanted to take MM in a "different direction". Apparently, they can't even get their stories straight.

Sean has just signed for a new movie called "Demoted".

Demoted (http://showhype.com/story/trio_of_actors_get_demoted_reuters/)

This just sounds to me like a redo of Sean's guest appearance on "My Name is Earl". Where have all the good , meaty dramatic roles gone?

It's not only sad for the talented actors not being offered challenging roles but also for the public. There seem to be so few new ideas for movies and just tired recycled ideas; It's rare you hear people talking about a movie they've just got to see. :(

Well, I DID like Mamma Mia! though that isn't a drama, or heavy by ANY MEANS. And now, I'm looking forward to the Twilight film (good book), but that doesn't mean that Twilight will be any good. We can only hope.

But both of these are very rare. I detest shoot 'em ups and that seems to be what most of the drama is any more. *sigh
