Title: Your favourite LotR quote
Post by: ForeverFrodo on February 04, 2007, 07:16:51 pm

What's your fave LotR quote?
Write down the quote and the name of the one who said it.
I don't know which my fave is, cause there're so many good ones, but here are one of my faves:
"I wish the ring had never come to me... I wish none of this had happened." - Frodo Baggins

Whenever Frodo says, "I'm glad you're with me", I just take off the name cuz I feel like he says it to me and makes me all giggly.

Oh geez, I can't think of them all on the spot. But the first one that comes to mind is this:

"The dwarf breathes so loud we could have shot him in the dark" - Haldir

I think it's funny when Gimli tells Strider to toss him, and then when he starts to he says, "Not a word to the Elf" and Strider says, "Not a Word!" LOL that's a funny one too!

"Even the smallest person can change the course of the future." - Galadriel

"There's some good in this world, Mr Frodo, and it's worth fighting for." - Sam

"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." - Gandalf

"I'd rather share one lifetime with you than to face all the ages of this world alone." - Arwen

"I didn't think it would end this way."
"End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another pad, one that we all must take. The grey rain curtain of this world rolls back and all turns to silver glass and then you see it..."
"What, Gandalf? See what?"
"White shores... And beyond... a far green country under a swift sunrise."
Pippin & Gandalf

"Farewell my brave Hobbits. My work is now finished. Here at last, on the shores of the sea, comes an end to our Fellowship. I will not say 'do not weep", for not all tears are an evil." - Gandalf

These are all magnificent quotes; I love them all, as well.

In the movies, I also love it when Arwen says, "If I leave him now, I will regret it forever." Something in the way she says it gets me everytime.

My all-time favorite quote, though, whether from book or film, is "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." It's so true of every aspect of life, and I love it. I love it so much, in fact, that I have it tattooed around my wrist in Elvish. :)

When Frodo says to sam at the end about always being torn, I can'r retype it, too long, gets me every time, I got it on an audiotape along w/ lotsa other Frodo soundbytes frome the Argonath site but that one really stabs at the heart, and where Frodo says he can't do it alone, I want to scream, "You AIN'T alone...I"M w/ u!"

I fully agree. It means so much more. Very often people seem to forget that they are the only one who can change their lives when they're feeling unhappy. But instead, they are blaming others and just carry on without changing anything. I think about that line very often.

It's great that you have a tattoo of that line. Do you happen to have a picture of it? I'd love to see it.

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. I have not much hope that Gollum can be cured before he dies, but there is a chance of it. And he is bound up with the fate of the Ring. My heart tells me that he has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before the end; and when that comes, the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many—yours not least. ~ Gandalf

I love this one!

My favorite quote:

"So don't all who see these times, but that is not for us to decide. All you have to do is decide what to do with the time you are given to you."

Very strong and awesome thoughts to ponder...especially during trying times.

I was really going to scream at that time and when at the beginning of the ROTK, before "The Return of the King" title is up Gndalf is looking around with Aragorn and Legssie and I felt like he has no hope and that was the most tear-jercking part for me in the ROTK :'([/color]

All I can say is thank the Lord of IMDB.com! ;D

Boromir: [holding the ring after Frodo has lost it] It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing.

Sam: I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. "Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee." And I don't mean to. I don't mean to.

Elrond: Nine companions. So be it. You shall be the fellowship of the ring.
Pippin: Great! Where are we going?

Frodo: I know what I must do, it's just that... I'm afraid to do it.
Galadriel: Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

Gimli: Nobody tosses a dwarf.

Frodo: Go back, Sam. I'm going to Mordor alone.
Sam: Of course you are. And I'm coming with you.

Pippin: What's that?
Merry: This, my friend, is a pint.
Pippin: It comes in pints?
[In low voice]
Pippin: I'm getting one.

Aragorn: Gentlemen, we do not stop till nightfall.
Pippin: What about breakfast?
Aragorn: You've already had it.
Pippin: We've had one, yes. What about second breakfast?
[Aragorn turns and walks off in disgust]
Merry: I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip.
Pippin: What about elevenses? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn't he?
Merry: I wouldn't count on it.

Gandalf: Confound it all, Samwise Gamgee. Have you been eavesdropping?
Sam: I ain't been droppin' no eaves sir, honest. I was just cutting the grass under the window there, if you'll follow me.
Gandalf: A little late for trimming the verge, don't you think?
Sam: I heard raised voices.
Gandalf: What did you hear? Speak.
Sam: N-nothing important. That is, I heard a good deal about a ring, and a Dark Lord, and something about the end of the world, but... Please, Mr. Gandalf, sir, don't hurt me. Don't turn me into anything... unnatural.

Pippin: Anyways, you need people of intelligence on this sort of... mission... quest... thing.
Merry: Well, that rules you out, Pip.

Pippin: Are we lost?
Merry: No.
Pippin: I think we are.
Merry: Shh. Gandalf's thinkin'.
Pippin: Merry?
Merry: What?
Pippin: I'm hungry.

Galadriel: The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true.

Frodo: Come on, Sam. Remember what Bilbo used to say: "It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

Sam: Trust a Brandybuck and a Took.
Merry: What? That was just a detour, a shortcut.
Sam: Shortcut to what?
Pippin: Mushrooms!

Aragorn: You said you'd bind yourself to me, forsaking the immortal life of your people.
Arwen: And to that I hold. I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.

Sam: Hey. Mr. Frodo's not going anywhere without me.
Elrond: No, indeed. It is hardly possible to separate you, even when he is summoned to a secret council and you are not.

Pippin: Oh that's nice - ash on my tomatoes.

Gimli: Dwarf doors are invisible when closed.
Gandalf: Yes, Gimli, their own masters cannot find them, if their secrets are forgotten.
Legolas: Why doesn't that surprise me?

Legolas: Lembas!
[nibbles a corner]
Legolas: One small bite is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man!
Merry: [to Pippin] How many did you eat?
Pippin: Four.
[burps]

Bilbo: [enigmatically] You're a good lad, Frodo. I'm very selfish, you know. Yes, I am. Very selfish. I don't know why I took you in after your mother and father died but it wasn't out of charity. I think it was because... of all my numerous relations, you were the one Baggins that showed real spirit.
Frodo: Bilbo, have you been at the Gaffer's home brew?
Bilbo: No.
[pause]
Bilbo: Well, yes, but that's not the point...

Frodo: We are hobbits of the Shire. Frodo Baggins is my name, and this is Samwise Gamgee.
Faramir: Your bodyguard?
Sam: His gardener.

Legolas: [in Elvish] You're late.
[in English]
Legolas: You look terrible.

Gimli: Oh come on, we can take 'em.
Aragorn: It's a long way.
Gimli: Toss me.
Aragorn: What?
Gimli: I cannot jump the distance, you'll have to toss me.
[pauses, looks up at Aragorn]
Gimli: Don't tell the elf.
Aragorn: Not a word.

Gollum: [singing] The rock and pool, is nice and cool, so juicy sweet. Our only wish,
[he whacks the fish on the rock]
Gollum: to catch a fish,
[another whack]
Gollum: so juicy sweet.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

Sam: What we need is a few good taters.
Gollum: What's taters, precious? What's taters, eh?
Sam: *Po-tay-toes!* Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew... Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish.
[Gollum makes a noise of disgust while sticking his tongue out]
Sam: Even you couldn't say no to that.
Gollum: Oh yes we could. Spoilin' nice fish. Give it to us raw and w-r-r-riggling; you keep nasty chips.
Sam: You're hopeless.

[following Gollum down the path]
Sam: I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales.
Frodo: [turns around] What?
Sam: I wonder if people will ever say, 'Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring.' And they'll say 'Yes, that's one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn't he, Dad?' 'Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that's saying a lot.'
Frodo: [continue walking] You've left out one of the chief characters - Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam.
[stops and turns to Sam]
Frodo: Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam.
Sam: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn't make fun; I was being serious.
Frodo: So was I.
[they continue to walk]
Sam: Samwise the Brave...

Gimli: It's true you don't see many dwarf women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for dwarf men.
Aragorn: [whispering] It's the beards.
Gimli: And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no dwarf women, and that dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!
[Eowyn laughs]
Gimli: Which is, of course, ridiculous.

Theoden: Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. How did it come to this?

That's some of them. There are definitely more. :D

[size=2]Mmm all of the quotes you have listed are beautiful! And I would have to agree that some of my most favorites are in there.

But, what about the book? =)

Here's a little bit. Thank you wikiquote! (And these are just a few parts from Return of the King.)

Frodo to Sam:
I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them. But you are my heir: all that I had and might have had I leave to you.
You will be the Mayor, of course, as long as you want to be, and the most famous gardener in history; and you will read things out of the Red Book, and keep alive the memory of the age that is gone. so that people will remember the Great Danger and so love their beloved land all the more.

Sam:
Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the Stars farewell.

More Sam:
'I'll get there, if I leave everything but my bones behind,' said Sam. 'And I'll carry Mr. Frodo up myself, if it breaks my back and heart.'
He knew all the arguments of despair and would not listen to them. His will was set, and only death would break it.

Faramir and Eowyn:
'Éowyn, do you not love me, or will you not?'
'I wished to be loved by another,' she answered. 'But I desire no man's pity.'
"Do not scorn pity that is the gift of a gentle heart, Éowyn! But I do not offer you my pity. For you are a lady high and valiant and have yourself won renown that shall not be forgotten; and you are a lady beautiful, I deem, beyond even the words of the Elven-tongue to tell. And I love you. " AHH, SO ROMANTIC!!

Gandalf:
Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! 'I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.'

And of course, my Sam:
Well, I'm back.[/size]

I've read through nearly all of your fave quotes, and they're brilliant ;)
I just remembered a quote from the Grey Havens scene:

I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.
- Gandalf

I think this quote says so much :'(

Hi

My fave quote is

Sam "What's wrong?"

Frodo "It's just a feeling, I don't think I'll be coming back"

Sam "of course you are, that's just morbid thinking wer'e going there and back again just like Bilbo did"

Something along those lines.. Out of The Two Towers.

Elizabeth

I do love that bit with galadriel in the FOTR - when she says ' Even the smalllest person can change the course of the future'. It was used on the ads and it stuck in my head...maybe cuz I'm not all that tall myself!

Yeah, that's mine too, along with Gimli's "Nobody tosses a Dwarf!" and "That still only counts as one!"

I also love it when Legolas continues counting as he's shooting.

SAM

"Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo? It'll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they'll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields... and eating the first of the strawberries with cream do you remember the taste of strawberries?"

FRODO

"No, Sam. I can't recall the taste of food... nor the sound of water... nor the touch of grass. I'm... naked in the dark. There's... There's nothing. No veil between me and the wheel of fire. I can see him with my waking eyes."

SAM

"Then let us be rid of it...I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you"

Love it

Elizabeth

Well, I have quite a few as well. I don't see where this has to be either book or movie, so a couple from each.

"Don't leave me here alone! Don't go where I can't follow." Sam ROTK (movie) TTT (book)

Sam and Frodo's speech that ends with "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you! COme on!" Sam and Frodo -ROTK

This is my favorite of both the book AND the movie.

"But even as hope died in Sam, or seemed to die, it was turned to a new strength. Sam's plain hobbit-face grew stern, almost grim, as the will hardened in him, and he felt through all his limbs a thrill, as if he was turning into some creature of stone and steel that neither despair nor weariness nor endless barren miles could subdue." Sam- ROTK

I love this one, too. I call it Frodo's Commission to Sam, for in Sam's life in ME, he does all of this, just as Frodo said he would.

"Your hands and your wits will be needed everywhere. You will be the Mayor, of course, as long as you want to be, and the most famous gardener in history; and you will read things out of the Red Book, and keep alive the memory of the age that is gone. so that people will remember the Great Danger and so love their beloved land all the more. And that will keep you as busy and as happy as anyone can be, as long as your part of the Story goes on."

There are really too many to name, but that will do to be going on with.

Hugs,
Rach
