Title: Sean Astin in "The Final Season"
Post by: Storyteller on June 02, 2006, 04:03:28 pm

Just a note, Sean is currently in Cedar Rapids , Iowa (is that ironic or what?) filiming in a movie called "The Final Season". Sean is has the starring role of Kent Stock, a young man coaching a high school baseball team through their last season before the school is closed.

For more info, check out the Sean thread in the Random things board.

Hugs,
Rach

I have a feeling this one is going to be good. The screenwriter holds a number of writing awards, including several poetry awards, and Sean's brother Mack, also as a role. I think this is the first time they have ever acted together.

Sean is hoping to reconnect with the audience who loved Rudy. If this is even half as good as that film, we have a winner!

Rach

The movie is looking good. Here's a site with lots of pictures from the set, including Sean. There's also an audio interview with him!

That sounds interesting--thanks for posting, Storyteller. That is cool that he gets to act with his brother for the first time, and definitely ironic about filming in Cedar Rapids! Hmm...speaking of Rudy, though, I haven't seen that yet. I'll have to look into it, seeing as you say it's good. ;)

The link to the site didn't work for me because my computer has some problems. I didn't realize Mackenzie was working with Sean on this movie; I wonder what that was like for them?

Well, it isn't their first job together, technically. Mack had a small part in Harrison Bergeron, as did their dad.

I'll have to see Rudy then. And look into The Final Season as well. It will be neat to see Sean's brother--I've never seen him before, even in pictures. (I have to admit i didn't know he had one... :-[ Oh well, i know now. ;) )

Well Starry, we can't let that go on now, can we?

First, boy Sean left, boy Mack right. Mack looks a lot like John Astin with Patty's coloring, I think.

Great pictures of the brothers, Rach. It was neat to see them "grow up" together in your pictures.

John was on the tv interviewing a golfer. Mack was the golfer.

They REALLY don't look at all alike, but they are certainly unusually close, even for brothers.

LOL I can see how you might, but this is very different. This time, he's the coach of a team playing what they know is there final season (the school is being closed). He has to instill in these boys, and the community the will to continue to play to their utmost ability when they know there will be no more baseball for them.

This character is very different, the story, instead of being about one young man, is about how that one man inspires an entire town.

THis one also has a love story for Sean!

Rach

Not keen on love stories...I get very jealous of teh women ::)

This film does sounds very interesting! It sounds like a great role for Sean too. And there are two scene from twi Sean films that make me believe he will own this role.

Needless to say, you want to see it Rach? ;)

Title: Re:Sean Astin in "The Final Season"
Post by: Storyteller on November 19, 2006, 06:27:24 am

Ok, I'm caught up now. Patty wouldn't have it if it weren't for Sean.

Patty had been offered a star for many years but had always turned the opportunity down. Something about the idea that people would walk on it and "Spit on it" bothered her. One day, she was walking down that street with Ali, when Ali asked why she didn't have a star. She shared her fears with her granddaughter who responded, "Oh no, Granny! They wouldn't spit on it. They'd remember you!"

That touched her in some way that got her over her fears and she was able to accept the star.

Hugs,
Rach

This one is going to be great! I just hope it gets wide release so we can all see it right away.

But if it doesn't, we can see it on dvd.

We're still waiting on "Thanks to Gravity" that he made the same time he did "Smile". Of course, he didn't star in that one like he does in TFS.

Title: Re:Sean Astin in "The Final Season"
Post by: Storyteller on July 03, 2007, 07:48:24 am

Not necessarily. They could choose to put it in just a few theaters to see what the reaction is. I can see the logic in that. Several of the movies Sean is in, though none in which he has been the main character, have gone to limited release and never hit wide release, Marilyn Hotchkiss, What Love Is, My Wife is Retarded (a short that has won several awards and in which he DOES star) and a couple of others.

I hate when they do that because then the film NEVER comes to a little town like the one in which I live, but that DOES usually mean it will come to dvd eventually.

I'm still holding out for wide release of this one, though. It's gotten very good reviews.

Hugs,
Rach

I don't mean to cause offense to anyone but I am not sure how much of a household name Sean has ever been here in the UK. To be honest I think it is only the LOTR fans who have heard of him. People who just saw the films casually probably don't know who he is. I certainly don't know anyone in real life who has heard of him. ::)

Oh, we were meaning in the US, I'm sure. I think he's more of a star here, though I have lots of Sean fan friends in the UK, too.

I doubt the Final Season will make him a household name in the UK since it's a baseball movie, but perhaps Borderland will.

Well, I know Sean's movies are hard to find over there. I used to send my VHS copies to a friend in Europe when I replaced them with dvds. That's sad. He has a vast array or varied work, all of it excellent. When you said he wasn't well knonw there it actually made my heart hurt. *sigh

TFS is getting wonderful reviews, however, and I think it's really going to be something special! I hope my English friends will at least have the opportunity to see it.

Oh wow...lots of Sean threads!!! Good work everyone! Maybe if a buzz is created....TFS will get wide release. Oh boy...that would be great! I live in a small town too....so unless it is wide release....I probably wouldn't get to see it in theaters. :'(

Heh heh...I keep forgetting that baseball is really an American sport. But you are right, Rach....Borderland might reach our English Sean fans. Although it seems a "leetle" grim for me....not sure I will be able to stomach it....it must be admitted that I am a bit of a wuss sometimes. :-\ But I am sure Sean is sensational in it. :D

Well, we had hardly anything last year, once he finished his run on 24, so I think we're due. Now several movies and the Watchbird thing all seem to be out there at once. What bothers me is that I'm not seeing where he has signed for more films. Of course, that's the way it is with Sean sometimes, you don't find out until the very last minute for some reason.

I just found this wonderful quote about TFS.

Q: Really, the movie is lovely. But you don't set out to make a movie like this unless you think there's an audience.
A: Everybody who has seen this movie, including those at the Tribeca film festival, has come away saying, 'What a wonderful movie. It's beautiful to look at, wonderfully scored.' And everybody says, 'Why don't they make more movies like this?'

THIS sounds like a movie I will enjoy, Sean or no Sean.

Title: Re:Sean Astin in "The Final Season"
Post by: chuckie3d on July 07, 2007, 11:49:54 am

I can’t think of any parts I didn’t like but I think they could have developed Kent Stock (Sean’s) character more and focused on his personal motivation in taking on the job that he did. I thought the role was a bit too low-key. I also feel too much time was spent spotlighting the former team without an equal emphasis on the new team who really had the more difficult task. I'm hoping there were scenes they held back or cut that can be added in for the theatrical release.

Title: Re:Sean Astin in "The Final Season"
Post by: Storyteller on July 07, 2007, 01:01:29 pm

Gosh! I'm surprised they spent more time on the old team than the new one since the NEW one was the one playing for most of the movie. That doesn't make sense.

I'm not sure I uderstand what you mean about Sean's role being low-key? I thought he had the starring role.

Actually to understand the town’s motivation in wanting to play one more season at their home school, the dominance of the previous teams HAD to be shown, I just felt that they didn’t spend as much time developing the new team.

Sean does have the starring role but it was truly an ensemble cast and I don't know that he had most of the screen time. Stock made some major life changes in order to take this job because he was a conscientious individual who was committed to this town, but he also had to be a dominant, intense, hardnosed individual to accomplish what he did and the movie just doesn’t show that side of him.

This is such wonderful news for Sean; the entire project sounded like such hard work bringing the story to life and a real labor of love for a lot of people.

I believe there was mention at Tribeca that some of the locals invested their own money in this movie so there’s a lot at stake financially for a lot of people. (Sean is one of the producers so he’s probably financially invested as well), This sounds to be like a major release with lots of advance publicity.

There is a bit of a dust-up over at IMDB over this movie from a few locals who are saying TFS isn’t entirely accurate but none of the people criticizing the movie have seen it. ***Minor Spoiler--the scene one person mentions as occurring in RL (player’s parent having a heart attack during the game) but not depicted was actually shown but in a different context. The writer Art D'Alessandro has posted a response, which I thought, was reasonable and understandable.

I will also say that at the viewing I attended which HAD a lot of locals received a standing ovation.

Very seldom are films EXACT copies of what really happened. They have to be changed, usually for logistics or dramatization reasons. I think it's asking too much to ask that nothing at all is changed.

But some people just like a reason to complain.

This movie is going to be wonderful, by all accounts.

I can't access that trailer on my computer but I'm glad to see things are moving along. I hope it still gets a fall release; does this mean it has a distributor or perhaps they aren't going to worry about that now.

I am pretty picky about the movies I see...but TFS is one that is definitely on my radar. ;D It seems like it can't help but be successful...especially in the states...where baseball is "as American as apple pie". :D Besides there aren't a lot of movies that have come out with any substance lately. The same old plot lines are getting old. So this will be refreshing.

Of course, it might be just me...I am a little weird about movies. ;)

You're right, our national pastime plus it tells such an unbelievable story, I can't understand why no distributor has has snapped it up yet. It seems like a guaranteed hit.

I think it HAS been snapped. If you go to the site, there's a distributor listed on the new credits. We aren't supposed to see this until October, though, as far as I know. It's good planning because that's during the WOrld Series when baseball interest should be high. Hopefully, Sean will be back in the country to do pr by then.

Title: Re:Sean Astin in "The Final Season"
Post by: Storyteller on October 13, 2007, 10:19:03 am

I think he was joking about the cycling, since it's one sport he hasn't done a film about. LOL

His next project is actually a kids' series for the Disney Channel. He's going to voice a comic teddy bear/secret agent for Disney's morning program block. Should be fun.

TFS is a film that seems to be drawing radically different opinions. The critics mostly hate it, claiming it is too "warm and fuzzy". But the average movie viewer LOVES it and wishes there was more like it.

Guess that shows the gap between the people and the critics.

I now have 1500 posts. Guess I need to think about a custom title....

The emphasis is just different. As a movie goer I'm going to enjoy myself and find things I like about a movie while the critics focus on what they don't like. AND they get to put their review in big bold letters in newspapers and magazines for everyone to see.

I saw it today and loved it! Sean is brilliantly understated, just like small town guys often are. He said he chose to play it that way as soon as he met the real Kent Stock and realized HE was understated! LOL

Oh boy! I can't wait to read your review, Rach! Ooooo...you lucky girl! I am green with envy. ;) Blast those critics...they seem so out of touch sometimes...However, the regular movie goers don't seem to pay any attention to them anyway. ;D We need a "warm and fuzzy" movie these days...especially for the kids (and the kid in all of us). 8)

Thanks for the article. It was sweet and interesting. I didn't know Mrs. Astin was from Indiana.

Title: Re:Sean Astin in "The Final Season"
Post by: Storyteller on October 15, 2007, 07:15:50 am

I agree with the need for warm fuzzies! The thing is, if you take a loo at it, most of us HAVE warm fuzzies in our lives and there's nothing wrong with depicting THAT side of life, too. None at all!

And on that note:

The Final Season

I know why Big City critics pan this film.

They come from Big Cities.

Small town America’s short on movie reviewers. Its residents are too busy raising corn, teaching high school English, or building bicycles to sit in theaters during a working day, scoffing in disbelief at realities they cannot understand. They are estranged, by location and most often familiarity, from the facts of life in a tiny place like Norway.

What these “experts” fail to realize is that reality is, most often, completely perceptual, totally dependent for its definition upon the person experiencing it. Oh, they know that life in Middle America exists, aware only in the deepest, dimmest recesses of their minds that their goose liver comes from somewhere, that someone feeds the chicken that winds up on their sandwich, waters the lettuce, and picks the tomato. But that is where it stops, for within their limited vision, there can be no way of life not like their own.

Those of us who have never lived in a place where one can find a pusher on every corner or where bullets fly thick as gnats on a mid-August evening, find films depicting such a life every bit as alien and stereotypical as the Big City Critics have declared The Final Season to be. The very reviewers who call TFS “sickly sweet” claim the label of “reality” for cinematic efforts depicting inner city existence as uniformly dark and brutal, a viewpoint equally as stereotypical as anything that Norway can provide, and just as unbelievable to those not a part of that world.

I am, however, experienced and open-minded enough to acknowledge that BOTH realities exist, and that a true story, no matter how “sweet” can never be a stereotype.

This is the reality of The Final Season, a story of baseball, but only just. The real story here is life in a minute town, in all the villages where people walk through their lives slowly, making their way not by aggression, but by being generally, genuinely, NICE to one another.

Sean Astin gives a serene performance as Kent Stock, the coach who was hired to fail, but didn’t. He keeps the role quiet, an idea he says came to him when he met the real life Stock, and succeeds in suppressing his own natural exuberance to the part. It’s the kind of presentation that should attract notice, but won’t, by virtue of its own brilliance. Mr. Astin chose to portray the coach as a low key Everyman and succeeded, possibly to his own detriment. It was a stroke of sheer genius and he carries it off with understated splendor!

Powers Boothe also excels as the coach fired because he did his job too well.

The only person who didn’t seem to fit was Tom Arnold, but I suspect that was more the result of choppy editing than Mr. Arnold’s performance.

And what’s to be the pill in all this jam? Yes, there were bitter spots in the sweetness like pieces of rind that escaped the strainer. Places in which the film seemed as rough as old dirt road. The film quality appeared less than perfect, almost skipping a beat at times. I couldn’t decide if this was the film, or the rather ancient and ratty theater in which I watched it. The bumps could also be the result of patchy directing or sub-par editing. All I can tell you is that the acting had nothing to do with it at all.

Keep your dark films declaring street gangs and gore as an all-encompassing truth. It has its place, as untruths go, but not here. Not just here. I’ll take the Final Seasons of the world. It’s nice to see my side of life take the field for a change.

As another of Mr. Astin’s brilliant characters once observed, “There’s still some good in the world.” Thanks for reminding us. We needed that just now.

Hugs,
Rach

I read another of those reviews last night. It talked about the movie being full of sports cliches. Well, the reason that a saying BECOMES cliche is because it's usually true.

There's definately an audience for uplifting, heart-warming films. Maybe the violence rate would drop if we had more of them.

It is frustrating to us fans not to see our favorite actors in roles we know they'd 'knock the socks off' in. It must be that much more aggravating for the actor to see roles they know they'd be good in go to someone else.

The problem Culpie was that it only opened at about 1,000 theaters nationwide and it didn't stay long. In my area which has a lot of cinemas, it was here 1 week and the next I couldn't find it anywhere. I think they will get some sales from the dvd.

I agree! We haven't seen the movie out here either. :'( You can bet I will hop on that DVD when it is released. :D

I think this is one you could watch over and over if you like it to begin with. Those are the ones I want in my dvd collection!

I wanted to mention that I just bought TFS at Sam's Club today for $19.76; it's a dual release with Diamonds in the Rough done in documentary form looking into Norway Baseball's historical past. I plan to watch both this weekend.

The other good thing is TFS has special features including a "making of" featurette. 8)

I just got it from Netflix yesterday and haven't had time to watch it. I have to pop over to Sam's for some meat anyway (they have the best meat in town here) so maybe I'll pick it up. That's not a bad price.

Let us know when you get to watch the making of!

Rach

Thanks so much for the heads up, Romeny! :-* We don't have a Sam's, but I will check Costco next week. :D
