Title: Favorite Samwise quotes
Post by: Rose on November 22, 2004, 11:57:54 pm

I realize there is already a thread on favorite LOTR quotes but I wanted to start one that is just Samwise Gamgee quotes. There were so many great quotes by him in the LOTR movies. Please tell your favorite quote by Sam. If someone has already posted your favorite Sam quote then just tell another one you like.

My favorite Sam quote (in fact my favorite quote of the whole movie) is:

"I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you."

There are so many Sam quotes that I love, but this one stands out for me:

"There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo........and it's worth fighting for!"

Coming in a close second is:

"It's your Sam, don't you know your Sam?" This scene is so powerful, I come to tears each time I see it.

you really have a knack for asking the tough questions. sam has way too many great lines.

"don't go where i can't follow."
" i wasn't droppin' no eaves sir, honest!"
"don't you leave him samwise gamgee, and i don't mean to."
"let him go, or i'll have you long-shanks!"
"po-ta-toes! boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew."

you see. way too many, and i can think of more! ;)

Rose, I absolutley love this quote! It is truly moving. Everytime I hear that line I get tears in my eyes. Sam is such an amazing hobbit. He is just so loyal and devoted to Frodo.

I can remember it word for word but its at the end of FOTR when Frodo gets in the boat and Fodo tells him, he as to do it alone and Sam's line is something like

"I know but I coming with you"

I love that one... but lets face it there is not one that is better then the other in my book.

i gotta admit that they are pretty powerful quotes but my fav would have 2 be these ones below:

" I know! And I'm coming with you!"
In ROTK when Gorbag and Grishnk take frodo from Torech Ungol (Shelobs lair) and take him to the tower, and Sam is hiding behind the rock, and he says " Not dead? Samwise you fool....."
And also in ROTK when Gollum poisons frodo against Sam and sam is left behind at the endless stair? When he says "You dont mean that," in such a sad tone that you want to reach through the tv and hug him! But my all time fav is when Sam enters Torech Ungol with the sword sting and the light of earendil ( The light of Galadriel) and says "Let him go. LET HIM GO!". I also love it in the prancing pony when Sam enters the room where aragorn and frodo are talking and he's holding candles. He says "Back, or I'll have you, long shanks!"
Sam is such a loyal character. Imagine what Frodo would be without Sam......

Sam:*whacks orc on face with fryingpan*

Those are great "Sam moments." I had not thought of those in awhile when I thought of Sam's best moments. Thanks for reminding me. :)

I am wondering why under your name it says you have 0 posts when obviously you have at least this one? ???

"Potatoes, mash em, boil em, stick em in a stew" hehhe

"What we wants is some nice big taters."

Ooh Samwise is so cuuute! ;D

I love the whole speech sam gives at the end of TTT! its so amazing! :)

Sam: "By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something. "
Frodo:" What are we holding on to Sam? "
Sam: "That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for. "

Also from the end of ROTK-

"Then let us be rid of it... once and for all. Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you. "

They are both soo good.. i cry everytime i watch those scenes!

-> Same for me, plus that one :

"Sam: Frodo, no!!! Frodo! Mr. Frodo!

Frodo:No, Sam. Go back, Sam. I'm going to Mordor alone.

Sam: Of course you are. And I'm coming with you!!

Frodo: You can't swim. Sam! [Sam's head goes under water.] SAM!

Sam:I made a promise, Mr. Frodo. A promise: "Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee." And I don't mean to. I don't mean to.

Frodo: Oh, Sam. Come on, then. "

I dunno if these have been mentioned but-

"...it would've been her"
- ROTK talking about Rosie. Just this line can make me cry!

"Potatoes- fry 'em. boil 'em, stick 'em in a stew"
-TTT the quote we love to quote at meal times!

FRODO- "I'm going alone sam"
SAM- "Of course you are, and I'm coming with you!"
FOTR awww! Swim Sam- swim!

For a little levity...........

Gandalf: Samwise Gamgee, have you been eavesdropping??

One thing I like about LOTR are the humorous moments as well as the "emotional" ones.

Title: Re:Favorite Samwise quotes

i loved how he kept going back to his promise he made to gandolf to never leave Frodo. "Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee, and i don't mean to, i don't mean to." that always brought tears to my eyes.. How he was so believing in keeping that one promise, and probably all his promises he made. I think that's one thing we have in common. I have never broken a promise in my life. But of course, i have lots of other things i need to work on, like procrastination. lol thats a big one. but yeah I just love it when he says that.
And when he talks about Rosie Cotten dancing with ribbons in her hair. And how if he was to marry anyone, it would have been her. It just brings him closer to human level.

Post by: Rose on January 11, 2005, 04:00:53 pm

Joanie, I love the humorous moments, too! ;D The one about "not dropping no eaves" is my second favorite humorous line of the movie. (My favorite is Pippin's "Great...where are we going?")

Brittany, it is really sweet how Sam holds that promise so dear and never breaks it or wavers from it. That is yet another reason why I like Sam's character so very much! ;)

Do you remember the Shire, Mr. Frodo?
It'll be spring soon and the orchards will be in blossom, and the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And the whistle in the summer barley in the Lower fields. And eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?

Then let us be rid of It! Once and for all! Come on, Mr. Frodo! I can't carry It for you, but I can carry you! Come on!

:'( I know! I love those quotes, too. I don't know how many times I have seen that scene and I STILL cry every single time! My children are just kind of like, "Oh, we are at that scene, I guess Mom is going to cry again!" :) My daughter even ran to get me a tissue the other day when we got to that scene. :) It is my favorite scene in all of three of the LOTR movies.

For me it HAS to be the 'theres some good left in this world' speech. It just has such an impact and is utterly relevant to real issues not just the story line of the film. I think the effect it has on gollum is fantastic too... infact thats my favourite gollum bit as well.
aww i love it, i want to watch it again. :P

I think one of my favorite scenes between Sam and Frodo that has yet to be mentioned here is from TTT:

Sam: I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales.
Frodo: [turns around] What?
Sam: I wonder if people will ever say, 'let's hear about Frodo and the Ring.' And they'll say 'yes, that's one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn't he, Dad?' 'Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that's saying alot.'
Frodo: [continue walking] You left out one of the chief characters - Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam.
[Frodo stops and turns to Sam]
Frodo: Frodo wouldn't got far without Sam.
Sam: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn't make fun; I was being serious.
Frodo: So was I.
[they continue to walk]

i loved how he kept going back to his promise he made to gandolf to never leave Frodo.

I like those quotes too especially the last one ;D

But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.

[color=Green].....

Frodo: We can't do this by ourselves, Sam. Not without a guide. I need you on my side.
Sam: I'm on your side, Mr. Frodo.
Frodo: I know, Sam. I know. Trust me.

Hmmm...I thought I had posted here. Perhaps not, since I can't seem to find it. My favorite Sam quote is from the book, ROTK.

Quote:
But even as hope died in Sam, or seemed to die, it was turned to a new strength. Sam's plain hobbit-face grew stern, almost grim, as the will hardened in him, and he felt through all his limbs a thrill, as if he was turning into some creature of stone and steel that neither despair nor weariness nor endless barren miles could subdue.

I also love when Galadriel calls him, "Little gardener, lover of trees". Knowing Tolkien as I do, this was a HIGH HONOR!

Hugs,
Rach

All of those, especially the "po-tay-toes" quote and the "I can't carry it for you" quote.

And my favorite that hasn't been posted yet:

Frodo: Don't worry, Sam. Rosie knows an idiot when she sees one.
Sam (looking worried): She does?

That's the scene where I stood up and yelled, "WHO is THAT?????" the first time I saw it! Luckily, I didn't see it in a theater. LOL That's the moment Sean Astin became Samwise for me and thus it began...LOL

Sam: I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales.

Frodo: What?

Sam: I wonder if people will ever say, 'Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring.' And they'll say 'Yes, that's one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn't he, Dad?' 'Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that's saying a lot.'

Frodo: You've left out one of the chief characters - Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam.

Frodo: Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam.

Sam: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn't make fun; I was being serious.

Frodo: So was I.

Sam: Samwise the Brave..

love this scene :D

Samwise is my favorite character, because i think everyone needs a samwise in their life. Someone who is loyal and will stand by your side no matter where it takes them.
there is this one samwise quote in which i live by to keep me going through life even when times are hard. I tear up when i watch this scene and yet im inspired as well.
I think its the longest and most powerful.

Sam: It's like in the great stories Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end it's only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines it'll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mr. Frodo, I do understand, I know now folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there's some good in the world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.

- Lindsey

Oh my gosh, I love that quote! It's a beautiful part, and it brought tears to my eyes the first time I watched it, and still does alot of times. I love it, and yeah, it helps me out alot too. It is very powerful. Thanks for posting it! :)

That's definitley one of my favs, but one of my other favs is when he says
"Come on Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you!" Oh my gosh... that was amazing. He is such a loyal friend, and I agree with you, everyone should have at least one friend like that. If only all my friends were that loyal, it'd be amazing. :) But I'm grateful for the two I have! :)

To me, the best quote Sam ever said was this:

Frodo: "What are we holding onto, Sam?"

Sam: "That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo."javascript:replaceText('%20:)')

I love all the quotes people listed, but as far as the book goes, THIS is my fave. Not a Sam quote, it was about him though. They were in Mordor.

"His will was set and only death would break it."

So poetic.
