Title: How has Elijah touched your life?
Post by: Billswife on January 25, 2009, 03:52:41 am

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone had moments or a moment in their life that Elijah's film roles or TV appearances served as a particular comfort, or just at the right time, or had a special meaning.

When I was depressed I would always watch lord of the rings to cheer me up and Elijah (Frodo) always did, esp when he hugging the other hobbits at the grey havens :)

He really does cheer a person up :) He was so cute when he was giving those hugs too.

After I had surgery (for the first time ever) I had to be on partial bed rest and couldn't do much. But I put in the LOTR DVD extended Edition and Elijah was interviewed talking about the movie. It was a nice moment, both comforting and entertaining. I'm not sure why it was a powerful moment other than the giant gap of time between when I saw LOTR in theaters and when I finally watched his interview or what. But it was a cool moment.

Yes, Elijah sure has had an unexpected impact on my life!

You see, a few years back I was in my mid-thirties and drowning in a sea of boring domesticity... :P I was stuck in a rut, and had almost forgotten what my pre-kids self was all about...

Then out of the blue I decided to watch the behind-the-scenes footage from the trilogy and... I don't really know how to explain it... Elijah just stood out to me as a kind of "shining light"! :o :)

I was mesmerised by him, and had to watch the movies and special features over and over again!! :-[ ::) ;)

Of course he was GREAT as Frodo and in his other roles, but there was just something about the "real" him that attracted me (besides his obvious gorgeousness! ::)) Anyhow, I've been obsessed by him ever since, but it's more than that...

Through Elijah and LOTR fandom, I feel like I've become more creative, happier, more like my former self. :D

I guess Elijah touched my life in a way that no other actor has. It was timing mostly. He got the part of a life time, being Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings trilogy. I began a long painful journey with a disease, RSD at the time the movies came out. I ended up in many hospitals, with lots of down time, waiting for tests, results , procedures, more tests, doctors poking me to see if yes, indeed she is in pain. But is she insane. B/C when one has RSD, the first thing people think is it's all psychosomatic. Anyway, while I was lying in the hospitals , I began to read the Lord of the Rings (again) and then the movies came out, and I saw Elijah as Frodo. I guess I got a little crazy, I latched onto the Frodo character and felt his pain as I felt my pain and I delved deep into the books, movies and music, The music of Lord of the Rings got me through many a wait time in the hospital. Elijah's Frodo helped me through my disease. I will forever be grateful

That is a powerful story f.r.o.d.o. I think it's wonderful that you were able to draw strenght from Tolkien's character. I have as well from Frodo and I think that's what Tolkien had in mind. Frodo imparticular was such a trouper to boot, even in the worst of times just he keeps on going strong. :)
And you are right there are alot of things that doctors can be completely clueless about, and tests, waiting, ect can be exhasperating.

Yes, it can be very exasperating, you are so right. I was determined not to spend my life in a wheelchair. It took many years and lots of "procedures" but in Jan 04, I was determined to go to ORC and make the end of my journey of pain done, I saw Elijah ,Dom, Bily,Sean and John Rhys Davis. I was in an electric wheel chair but was definitely getting better. This fall I fulfilled my dream, I was again a coach of a soccer team.
After 6 years of coming back. Lord of the Rings, and Elijah's Frodo and of course J RR Tolkien's books and Howard Shore's music (and my hubby and family and doctors) helped get me through. I'm glad you liked my story.

The most upbeat part of this story is that , during my time without work, in a wheelchair at home and in hospitals, finding ways to help myself , I managed to get into a book and be part of the movie "Ringers, Lord of the Fans."

Wow! Kudo's to you Frodo! :) It' just goes to show how a person can overcome anything if they put their mind to it! :) It's great you had your hubby and family and a good doctor is important. (One thats kind and one that listens).
I don't think it's possible to get through a major thing without family, it's hard for a person to realize how comforting and helpful and needed family is until it comes down to it. :)

Thanks to you all for your kind words. I was truly blessed to have my family and friends help me through this difficult time. I can't believe I was in a wheelchair, being pushed here and there, not even knowing if I'd ever walk again, let alone go back to work and do coaching. I was determined.
You asked how I got into "Lord of the Fans?" well, it was just that I could really do nothing but lie around b/c I couldn't walk and so I delved into anything online that had to do with LOTR. I bumped into this site where this guy (one of the producers of the films) was asking out in cyber space, if anyone had Tolkien memerobilia from the 1970's . I wrote back and said yes, my hubby and I have loved LOTR books and artwork since the early 70's and we had collected the artwork that was on the Tolkien calendars since then. He wrote me back and asked if I would photograph them digitally for him. I had to sign some forms and I photographed a few in particular he was looking for. He wrote me and told me some of my photos would be in the movie. and sure enough. Someone wrote me and told me my name was in the credits , I got the movie and saw, very briefly, my photo! I actually got to meet him at the ORC convention in LA. he was very nice. I was still in a wheelchair but was beginning to walk at that point.

That's awesome f.r.o.d.o You must have been so surprised in getting to meet the guy! I would have been too shy :-[ :)
And also about being out of the wheelchair. That must have been a really frustrating experience while it lasted. But what an inspiration to others in the same circumstance that you can get past something that life altering and do such cool stuff.

I also loved the 1970's Tolkien artwork. I still remember (wha I think is) the original book cove for the hobbit.

Hitorical stuff in any form is always a good thing to collect ;)

Yes, especially very famous books. I know the Wizard of Oz series is VERY collectable and expensive to get. I believe they now have published new LOTR with the old cover art on it in paperback. But I'm not sure. Anyone?
Yes, I was very fortunate to meet both Elijah, Dom, Billy, Sean and John Rhys Davis at ORC along with the producers of "Lord of the Fans" They were all very very nice. I gave Elijah a sculpture I made of Frodo

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/jobrig/frodosculpt7.jpg

I don't know what he did with it. I suppose I never will find out. But , by sculpting it, it helped me through my pain.

Actually, I was quite the chatterbox. Since I was in my wheelchair, I waited for a long time to see him b/c I didn't want to hold anyone else up and make them mad, so I was the last person on the line to meet him. He was very cordial and waited till I used my cane to get to where he was sitting. I gave him my sculpture and explained why I kept it white, it symbolized Frodo going into the Grey Havens. I couldn't stop talking. He giggled when I told him he could hang the sculpture up in his bathroom over his toilet.
(I wonder if he INDEED DID do that!!) He was very cordial and patient. My daughter and I also got a photo with him. I was the crazy fan and she could have cared less. But he brightened up when she sat down and I'm sure he was happy to be with a younger person than a broken down older person like me. I am much different looking than in those photos we got, I am more fit and coached soccer this fall, something I was striving to do for 6 years. He is more fit and much more mature looking.(SIGH)

I saw that sculpture before f.r.o.d.o. that was really cool. Sculpture is so perfect for him anyway, he's got the sort of face that wants to be a sculpture and/or painting.

Also don't sell youself short, I think all of us would feel tremendously insecure meeting Elijah Wood :o
but he strikes me as being the sort of person who can appreciate the time and effort you took on his behalf. I have written a different celebrity and recieved a response before and our fandom, effort and time even if celebrities don't always have the time to respond to all of it, realy does mean something to them. :)
Also regarding the Oz books, I have some of those too. There are so many including "The Patchwork girl of Oz" and "Ozma" of Oz. I was surprised to find there are a ton..not just the "Wizard of Oz." :)

I absolutely luv Elijahs acting and he is so adorable but
he has not touched my life in anyway...i look up to him for his strength in knowing excatly what he wanted to do and doing it, i also look up to him for being able to follow through with his dream but the people who have touched my life somehow or the people who i admire the most are life saving people, i really and truely admire doctors, paramedics anybody who has made it there life to save others......actors even though very talented and make tons of money are just like me and you with an acting ability.....they put in alot of hard work, but it is for entertaining purposes so no actor or actress will ever touch my life in a way that life saving careers have touched my life...... but one thing i really admire about Elijah is the fact that he took the time out to support his charity, i love it when people (actors) who have the money to spare, take there time and money and invest it into a charity, that to me shows that they are not shallow and self absorbed....so i guess that is one way that Elijah has touched my life, he took time out for his charity!!!

You know something? After I gave him the sculpture, I MISSED IT. I had worked so hard on it. ( I had worked on one sculpture, and destroyed it to start the final one I gave him) When I went away and he was whisked away, I missed it. I said I should just make another............. I never did. But, at ORC, I had made this glass mosaic of Bilbo Baggin's Bag End and sold it for auction to help the Red Cross to help the Tsunami victims that year. I felt really good about that.

I had a lot of bad things happen to me when I was a kid. But I looked forward to seeing his face on TV and that was one of the few things I looked forward to.

I became pretty shy and I decided to take acting. I did it because I thought it'd help free me from being shy, but Elijah was also my inspiration to. I took it for a couple of years. The second year my teacher assigned us to make-up a stand-up comedy. I panicked. Honestly...I felt like I didn't know how to be funny. But I did it and my stand-up comedy was the funniest out of the class! It felt like I really accomplished something. I have Elijah to thank for that.

How has Elijah touched my life? Elijah saved my life! Before I "met" Him, I was a nervous pessimist...now I'm an incurable optimist! ;D
And I think, that I'm better.

When I was depressed I would always watch lord of the rings to cheer me up and Elijah (Frodo) always did, esp when he hugging the other hobbits at the grey havens :)
Like miss sixty, I also suffered from depression, three months straight in fact. During that time, I'd watch the Lord of the Rings movies almost every day with my dad, who, ironically enough, was who caused my depression to begin with. It greatly helped that I related the most with the character Frodo Baggins, especially when I read the books two years later.

The second thing Elijah's doing to touch my life right now is showing me, just by being himself, what kind of man to be looking for in a boyfriend. The strange thing is, we have so much in common that it's not even funny. Although the result of this creates very nice, romantic day dreams, the likelihood of going out with him is very slim. I'm not giving up hope on my dream, though.
So you see, besides playing one of my favorite literary characters, Elijah Wood has taught me how it feels to fall in love, he just doesn't know he's doing it.

I don't want to go into details, but it was at a very rough time in my life, and one thing that really helped me get through it was thinking of Frodo when he's climbing Mount Doom at the end, when it's just showing him crawling up and it's playing that music, do you know what I mean? Well, I kept thinking if he could do that, I could get through what I was going through. I guess that's the easiest way to explain it without going into details.
I know it sounds strange, but it really did help,

Wow, a lot of people have amazing stories! Seriously, I feel inspired by everyone's strength! I feel sort of lame with my stories now! :P

Elijah Wood has impacted my life in a multitude of ways - summer camp experiences, indirect introductions to other movies, actors, and musicians, etc.

Back in the day, when my parents were both working and I was too young to stay at home by myself, I was enrolled in summer day camp at the local community center. Every Friday would be Movie Day. For some reason, we would almost always end up watching "Flipper". I think it was because I lived in Nevada and everyone at the time was obsessed with the dolphin exhibit at the Mirage (a resort and casino in Las Vegas; actually Siegfried and Roy had their show there too until, well you know, the tiger attack, but I digress). Everyone in my summer camp loved dolphins (it was the thing to love at the age of 9), so the movie "Flipper" was perfect. I think I may have even seen it in theaters on a field trip...?

So, watching young Elijah Wood would keep all of us kiddos amused for an hour or two during the hot desert summers. Watching "Flipper" somehow makes it feel like summer, and I feel like a little kid again - it takes me back to a very innocent and specific time in my life.

My Elijah Wood days became relatively dormant after that - until LOTR came out. The influence of Elijah has been pretty profound since then.

When Elijah Wood was linked to Franka Potente I looked into her work, and discovered the movie "Run Lola Run", which has actually become my favorite movie.

In addition, I've explored a bunch of different musicians and bands that Elijah has mentioned in various interviews - Thom Yorke, Radiohead, Gogol Bordello, etc. Not to mention, his involvement on Viggo Mortenson's Pandemoniumfromamerica pretty much rocked my world; I was a freshman in high school when he collaborated with Viggo, Billy, Dom, etc. My parents were on the brink of divorce, so listening to a song like "Half Fling" would brighten my day. :) To this day, when I make someone a mixed CD, I have to add "Half Fling"!

I was originally not going to post because I thought ahh I'll sound far too cliche, but anyway here goes...

I suffer from, lets say a variety of disorders and sometimes its incredibly hard to actually get out of bed, as I'm one for escapism and what not, LOTR always provides some sort of relief, rereading that I suppose it sounds kinda stupid, but for three hours I'm actually quite content! I always think that film has an inspiring way of bringing out good emotions when your feeling at your lowest.

I don't think Elijah is a shallow person and does acting to make money for himself. The more I learned about Elijah, the more I adored him because he had been involved in many charities, especially kids-related charities. He indeed inspired me to do great things too. He is not just an actor to me.

These are some heartwarming stories on here :) <3
3 years ago I was diagnosed with severe Scoliosis and depression. At that same time I got into Lord of the Rings and Elijah :). I remember I would watch LotR or any other Elijah movie after I was put into my brace before i went to bed. Elijah and Lotr gave me something to do to pass the time and pain. LotR and Elijah were my escapism and I clung to them.:) It gave me something to look forward to and saved my life <3 I also fell in love with the character Frodo and felt that I could relate to him :). A year ago I finally had major back surgery for it and am doing great :)

Wow, Frodobsessed--that is a really touching story. I'm glad to hear you're doing better.

I've been introduced to some interesting new music and artists through Elijah. When he tweets about a song or mentions what he's listening to in an interview, I check it out. It's always something I would've never been exposed to otherwise.

Thank you guys for such a great site & topic.
Elijah has changed my life completely. However i am still crazy to think that 10 years had passed after the first time I saw him. I have a deep impact and still feel the greatest feelings about him. And of course I will never foget the day I was taken to cinema by my friends to see LOTR and I fell in love with him deeply after the 1st second.

I feel a little bit sad that it all had an end, and there is no LOTR holler anymore. And I am quite sad that I have no friends to talk about him.:(

So if someone wants to talk, to chat to find a pan-pall and a great friend, do not hesitate to write me :) I will be very glad :))))

"How has Elijah touched your life?"

Well that's a simple question.

You fly to wherever his location is, swim through swarms of crowds that dare to trample all over you, run straight towards Elijah, and touch him. It's easy as that. and then you fly back to your location step into your house (with him) and turn to him and say, in a sing-song-y voice, "WELLCOME TO MY LIIIFE!"

Or you could always use a helicopter and a fishing pole to catch a colorful pair of blue eyes in the craziness of fans lol. That'd be more creative.

...

I really am trying too hard to be funny. I'm sure plenty of fans are reading this now and thinking, "So when do the men in the white coats come in to take you to the happy hotel, huh?" -scalped for KND reference-

I cannot believe I haven't ran across this thread yet.

I only hope that I can touch Elijah soon enough. I may be living on false hope, but I don't really care anymore. I just want to tell him that's he has been such an inspiration towards me these past few years. That's how he touched my life. I think he's made it even better.
