Title: I met Elijah at the Gogol gig in Nottingham, UK!
Post by: Plutonic on July 04, 2006, 05:39:49 pm

Hi

I went to the Gogol Bordello gig at Rock City in Nottingham (UK) last night (3rd July), and was lucky enough to meet Elijah!! I hope you don’t mind me posting this detailed account here - I haven’t got a web site or Live Journal or MySpace or anything, and I just want to share the experience with like-minded people!

I bought the ticket months ago, and it wasn’t until last month I realised that Elijah would be in the UK for Comic Con on 1st & 2nd – so there was a good chance he might make it up to Nottingham to be with Pam.

Anyway, just in case a miracle happened and I saw him, I went equipped with a piece of card for him to sign, plus a CD I wanted to give him (by a band called Breed 77 – they’re from Gibraltar and do a unique fusion of metal/hard rock with Flamenco influences).

By the time the first support band were well into their set, I’d given up on the idea of seeing Elijah – maybe he wasn’t there, maybe he was backstage, and anyway, what was the chance of spotting him in the rapidly increasing crowd? But then (proving that miracles do indeed happen ;) ), I happened to look down from my vantage point half–way up the stairs to the balcony (I’m only 5 feet tall, so I always stand there to get a decent view of the stage) and there, sitting on the end of a raised platform below the stairs, was a familiar couple....... I think the word here is ‘SQUEEE!!’? ;D Elijah and Pam were kissing and canoodling, clearly besotted with each other. :) Elijah was very excited and animated.

I went down the stairs in case they got up and headed for the backstage doors just a few yards away and waited, trying not to look at them cause it seemed rude to, but not wanting to loose track of where they were! Anyway, a couple of minutes later they got up. I think Elijah said something like ‘Let’s get going’ – clearly it was time for Pam to get ready for the gig. I smiled at Pam as she went past towards the doors, then Elijah went past.....so I took my courage in my hands and tapped him gently on the shoulder.....

Me: “I’m sorry to bother you…um…” {incoherent mumbling whilst I try to keep body, mind & soul together!!} “..er.. I really love your work”.
Elijah: “Thank you!”
Me: {handing him the CD}: “Have you heard of the band Breed 77?”
Elijah: “What’s that?” {as in, ‘what did you say?’ – we’re trying to communicate over the sound of a band playing}
Me: “Breed 77. It’s ‘Flamenco Metal’.”
Elijah: “Oh, cool!” {said in a slightly bemused way, bless him – after all, it’s not every day you hear the phrase ‘flamenco metal’! ;D }
Me: “You might not like it……”
Elijah: “No, no..” {as in, “but I might like it”} “Thank you!”.
Me: “Could I have your autograph, please?” {at least, I do hope I said ‘please’ – I can’t remember!}
Elijah: “Sure! What’s your name?”
Me: “Diane. I’m really looking forward to the show tonight….”
Elijah: “It’s gonna be great – you’ll love it!”.
Elijah hands me the autograph, I say a heartfelt thank you, he flashes a beautiful smile, and then disappears backstage through the doors. I spend the next 24 hours with an inane grin on my face, much to my long-suffering husband’s amusement! :P

Elijah was so gracious and friendly. :) I only took up a minute of his time, but even so, it was his time and every minute with Pam must be precious to him, so I’m so grateful to him for speaking to me – and signing an autograph with what must be a very sore hand after Comic Con! I hope he enjoys the CD – but even if he doesn’t, he seems to be on a mission to collect every CD ever produced ;), so at least I helped him out a little there.... ;D

My brain registered the fact that he looked absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, and yet the weirdest thing is that I can’t really recall anything about him clearly, except his eyes. Not the colour, because it was too dark for that, but they are so big and luminous with beautiful long lashes.....Unfortunately,I haven’t got a photo to share with you, because my phone is a little ancient (bit like me!) and doesn’t take pictures.....and besides, I don’t think it would have been appropriate to ask for a photo anyway.

And the show? Elijah was right – it was great and I did love it! In fact, Gogol are one of the best bands I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a fair few)! You can’t help but clap and sway and bounce and headbang and well, just move to each and every song – fantastic! Pam and Elizabeth don’t come on for every song, but I must say I liked the songs in which they took part the best – they add a whole extra dimension with their percussion, dancing and singing. :)

Well, I’m off to buy some Gogol Bordello CDs.... oh, and a Breed 77 CD to replace the gap in my collection! ;D

May I ask why no camera? They're sold at every corner shop. (Sorry, but I don't trust stories by people who provide no proof, or accompanying accounts)

Yay! Sounds like you had a great experience. And very thoughtful of you to not push your luck and try to get a photo. I'm sure he was anxious to keep moving...although as nice a guy as he is, he would probably have agreed if you'd asked.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Thanks for sharing that experience with us! And, personally, I'm glad you wouldn't have pressed him for a photo, even if you'd had a camera. It doesn't really seem the right sort of venue for that, though I know he'd graciously oblige. :)

Well, firstly, I was at the gig on my own (I'm 46 and well used to going to gigs on my own as my husband and friends don't share my musical tastes! ::)) so I wouldn't have been able to get a photo of the two of us without asking some stranger and drawing attention to the fact that Elijah was there - which I didn't want to do.

Secondly, as I said, I didn't think it would be an appropriate place and time for a photo. I have a camera at home I could have taken. I chose not to. I didn't want to meet Elijah to get 'proof' so other people would believe me, I wanted to meet him because I respect and admire him and wanted to give him a CD.

Maybe someone else met him there too and has a photo? He was wearing a white T-shirt and had a long red cord round his neck with what I presumed to be a backstage pass on it.

But whether people believe my account or not is neither here nor there to me, to be honest. I know I've met him, I'll treasure the experience, and I wanted to share it with others on this board - end of story.

I'm so glad the rest of you enjoyed my account. :)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience of meeting Elijah. It was a lovely account and really made my day. Can't understand why a couple of people find it so totally unbelievable that Elijah would be at a GB gig. ??? It has been known to happen and he has been known to talk to fans at those gigs. So no photographic evidence is required as far as I'm concerned. Now if you stated you and your husband had a foursome with Elijah and Pam, then OK, then that might be just a tad unbelievable! ;)

I think this is a believable account and want to thank Plutonic for sharing. I personally never carry a camera and if I had one would not have used it under the circumstances she described. Many years ago, my sister-in-law and I were in a restaurant in Atlantic City seated near boxing promoter Don King. We acknowledged him but didn't ask for his autograph or picture although others nearby did and it certainly would not have occurred to me to snap his picture while he was eating dinner.

I would feel the same!

Yep, I never met an Elijah fan in person too, which is bummer... All my friends and family think I am a bit crazy... :(

Title: Re:I met Elijah at the Gogol gig in Nottingham, UK!
Post by: Seven on July 05, 2006, 11:11:18 am

Sorry that offends you Plutonic. But frankly, I've encountered too many liars with agendas and sockpuppets to simply believe any such encounter without proof, from someone relatively unknown. Too many similar accounts have been faked, even in submissions to the media.

It wouldn't matter who was in such an account, or what they were doing. If it could belong to anyone with an agenda, then I don't take it seriously until it's backed up by evidence or someone who definitely has no agenda. (IE, I didn't believe the public gay snogging accounts, or the Lolita model reports)

I don't think that's too unreasonable. It's hardly a crime to simply not take the word of any person who signs onto a board...

I've seen Elijah at two Gogol Bordello shows (and smooching with Pamela :-*), it's been known to happen. I don't think anyone would need to make that up. :)

I'm so glad you got to meet him, and it's great that you didn't push to get a photo with him, or call attention to him. The guy's just trying to relax and enjoy himself.

According to two reports, Elijah was at the Manchester GB gig on Tuesday, as well. :) No smooching sighted in those, though; just taking photos and enjoying himself.

Oh, they would. And do. ;) At least three have been nabbed for it, because apparently they felt that people might get the wrong idea if they weren't seen together often enough. They claimed that Elijah was with Pamela and so very very affectionate, when one or both was confirmed somewhere else. They've since gone on to, shall we say, new web names.

I guess Elijah's streak is continuing, seeing GB whenever he's in the area, though not elsewhere.

Yours is such a great account, and reflects a maturity which I wish many other people had when encountering Elijah in the wild. There is a time and place for everything, and that was not an appropriate camera time. What should you have done... film a kiss by kiss record of their canoodling session? (Though that would be nice to see... ::) :-* :-* :-* ;)) How intrusive could anyone get? Glad you didn't go all papparazzi on them! [/color]

i know what it's like to see elijah out and about doing his thing. enjoying his "me" time and not taking a picture. i had my camera and did take some of him, but in certain situations, it just wasn't appropriate. there is a thing called a conscience, and respecting ones privacy.

on my way to see elijah last year, i met danny glover at union station in DC. as soon as i saw him i grabbed my camera and beelined toward him, but he looked extremely tired, so i ditched the camera and shook his hand instead. :D

they toured last winter without Pam and Elizabeth. neither one made it across the Atlantic for various reasons. the other girl's name is Cathy. and no, she is not that good. i guess that would be a hard job to fill in for the other two because they are so good.

Oh please don't tell me people are going to start getting their knickers in a knot because somebody knew somebody at ELF who thinks they know why Elijah cancelled. Even if that was the real reason (which I very much doubt considering E & P have been known to cope with spending time apart) I doubt if his management would give that reason to ELF staffers. ::) ELF is one weekend right? I find it hard to believe Elijah can't be away from GB or Pam for one weekend. Afterall he's just done that. And he flits back and forth across the Atlantic like a migrating pigeon for goodness sake.

It's not that you should believe every story that's posted - and by the sounds of things you probably have been hurt by sock puppets and the like in the past, which is a shame. But perhaps you could think about the tone in which your post came across. It came across as quite sarcastic and sort of ridiculing of Plutonic - which is a little unfair to a new poster that you don't know. A new poster is not going to understand the built up anger that was evident in the post. I'm a newbie too and I was quite taken aback by the tone because I didn't understand where you were coming from.

Perhaps if you wanted her to verify her story, you could have just explained politely why you doubt these kinds of stories and then explain why you'd like to see a photograph if possible. I'm sure you'd get a much more understanding response. I bet this sounds so blastedly preachy - I'm sorry for that. It just that I think you're misunderstanding Plutonic's and other's negative reaction to your post.

As to why Elijah hasn’t said anything about why he canceled ELF, perhaps he is obligated not to say anything.

He could have been cast in a film and the producers and director want to keep the whole thing under wraps until casting is complete.

I sincerely doubt he would turn down a good role to follow GB from place to place.
All though my husband thinks Pam would be worth it. ::)

Plutonic that was great that you got to meet Elijah. I came close once but alas. :'(

I would love to hear that CD you gave him. My husband plays trumpet in a local Mariachi band so I appreciate the Flamenco.

(Doesn't want to start a riot so I wonder if I should suggest such a thing...)
Maybe it's very PERSONAL .... why he won't be there and maybe it's none of our business.....just a thought.

Wasn't the official reason, given by ELF organisers at the time of the announcement a week or more ago, was that he had been booked for a film? I'm sure I remember seeing announcement at theonering.net I think.

Yes, that's what Creation Entertainment posted at their website, too.

What a wonderful encounter for you Plutonic!! If and when I ever get the opportunity to meet with Elijah, I hope it's spontaneous like that, and I hope I remember everything you remembered...like something for him to autograph and a wonderful little gift like the cd you gave him!! I'm afraid I'd probably back the poor guy into a corner and talk his lovely little ears off!! ::) ::)

I did get to meet Pam and have my picture taken with her last year at a GB concert!! It was an outdoor concert and Deenan and I were right by the stage...it was awesome!! And old *phew* honey don't sweat it...you're only as old as you feel!! ;) ;) :-*

Thats really cool. Elijah is the best when it comes to meeting fans, he loves them and makes sure you are looked after. He is by far the nicest celebrity anyone would ever meet :)

Amen, sister! ;D Lol

Plutonic, thank you again for sharing that report. I have never actually met our man myself (though I did see him at ORC :o ), so the accounts of others are basically all I have in that regard. I always enjoy reading about how others have met him. :) Btw, he probably will like that music you gave him. From what I've heard, Elijah never met a CD he didn't like. ;)

LOL! But I don't know...... I hope he likes it, but I'm wondering if it might be a bit too heavy for his tastes - it's more 'metal' than 'flamenco', though it is very melodic metal. Half of me thinks - "how can he not like it - it's brilliant" - but then, I always think that about the music I love, and can never understand it when other people don't share my opinion! ;D
I'm really glad I gave it to him, though! :)

I hope you get to meet Elijah one day!

Thank you! I hope so, too. (Obviously lol.)

Well, people sometimes have surprising tastes in music. My ballet teacher, for example, is a very practical, down-to-earth person. Yet she seems to really enjoy music that is more mystical and airy sounding (as well as other kinds). Anyway i hope he likes it.

I'm hopelessly behind, but I just read through this. Thanks for sharing your encounter, Plutonic! :D I really enjoyed reading it. Sounds like a wonderful night. And, as a somewhat older, married, 5' tall woman, I felt an immediate connection with you. ;D Sorry you didn't get to meet Chowling there. I'm excited because I will get to meet her in a few weeks. :D

Yes, Nettie had the nerve to change her user name to Chowling, just to confuse those of us who tend to get easily confused. ;D Thanks! I'm sure we will have a blast! I can't wait! :D

*is even way more hopelessly behind*

Your account was fantastic! I'm so glad you were able to meet Elijah and give him a CD. I'm sure he likes it. ;) I agree, that was a very mature way of handling the situation. I'm sure Elijah appreciates your respect for his and Pam's privacy by not taking much of his time and by taking a photo.

I'll probably never going to meet him though, so thanks to all of you who share your experiences with us hopeless hobbits.
