Title: Best Book for Tweens (pre teens)
Post by: maryd on May 28, 2007, 05:27:07 am

I'm actually just wondering what kind of books anyone would recommend for my 11-12 year old sister? She's 11 coming 12 and enjoys reading, but she's complaining she can't find anything good! I've given her all my suggestions but she needs help!! Any ideas, anyone?

What kind of things is she in to?
I could recommend some good books but whether they'd be suitable for a 12 year old all depends if she's 12 going on 22 ::)

She's got a high reading level and she really does love evrything - recently read Louis Sachar's 'Holes' and 'Small Steps', favourite author is Jaqueline Wilson and she loves Harry Potter! 12 going on 22 is about right!!

I don't know if she has read these already but Robert Cormier is a very good writer for teenagers and older children. I read his books when I was about 13 and enjoyed all of them. Here are some of his titles:

I am the Cheese
The Chocolate War
After the First Death
The Bumblebee flies anyway

He has written more books but these are the one's I have read myself.

Thanks very much - I'll check them up for her!
Would that be the same 'the bumblebee flies away' as the film Elijah was in?

I haven't seen Elijah's film :-[ but I would assume it was the same as Robert Cormier's book.

Yes, it's the same. I have the book, it's pretty good though it differs a lot from the movie.

What about CS Lewis? I'm sure she'd heard of him, the Chronicles of Narnia? Or Philip Pullman's trilogy, His Dark Materials?

I know what you mean about your sister's high reading level. My younger brother was and is still, like that. :) But it just depends on what she likes.
