Title: Writing your own book or plan to?
Post by: potatoes on January 06, 2007, 09:39:18 pm

im working on a book at the moment
and i was wondering if anyone else was or was thinking about it

or if you just like short/long stories?!

so
-does anyone have problems when it comes to writing your book?
-have any ideas and dont know how to get them down
-ever had success with a book or poem etc and got it published
-know any handy sites/books that can help someone wanting to write a story?
-or have anything at all to say about writing your own work

:)

Please do not write all in caps. This equals yelling and is not considered very polite. Thank you!

I have been working on my book for 3 years now. I have it wrote and id it in 1 and a half years. I am just typing it into the computer now and making some changes as I go. I hand wrote it in 3, 3 subject spiral notebooks on every page front and back.

I always wanted to write a book and had alot of things I wanted to write about but never knew how to get started and do it. Till one day I was going down the road with my family and we were talking about Rowlings and HP. I mentioned what I just said above and they told me I could do it and to just start. I thought if Rowlings could do it since she had never wrote before and she was/is as old as I am then I can do it. So the next day my hubby bought me my 1st spiral 3 subject notebook. I took it and on the first day I wrote about 20 pages or so nonstop.

There were some days I didn't write or I didn't know what to write so I got advice from my family and my kids helped a bunch. Now it's 3 years (in May) later and just finishing typing in the second notebook. I am so anxious to get it finished. It is like a baby to me and I raised it. I feel like I know the characters and they are real. The places in my book I feel like I have traveled there.

Once I get it typed my hubby is going to read it and let me know what kind of changes that needs to be done. When we get that done I am going to take a copy of it to the post office and certify it to myself in the mail. I wont open it and put it in a saftey deposit box for safe keeping in case later if aomeone came and said I stole their book or ideas I can take my unopened copy from the bank to a judge and prove it is mine and not theirs. That is one way of copywriting your work. I have done this to some of my poems and I wont reveal which one or ones.

So Potatoes you can do and be anything you want to do or be. Just make sure when you write a book just be very careful so no one will steal your work. You must choose wisely whom you want to entrust your work with. I know from experience that it is so exciting about sharing your work with others but you have to bite the bullet and keep it hush hush. The time will come when all will see and you can sit back and enjoy the rewards.

Good luck my friend.

I think it was you that posted the first part of your novel. Now it's gone. I hope you didn't get mad at me for deleting it on what I had said. If I upset you I am sorry my friend.

oh no Scroll not at all
what you said was right and I decided it was best to get rid of it, keep it in safe hands :)
I wasnt upset in the slightest, dont worry ;)

Post by: scroll on January 09, 2007, 09:36:25 am

Oh I am so glad you aren't mad. I do however still get a bit leery about posting my poems. Thinking they will get stolen but like I said before I have copywritten one, some, or all and not teliing what it is and which one they are. That way I am covered on that part.

Just keep on with your work and it will pay off.

Well, my sister wants to write a book and I guess she already knows most of the story. So far, she has wrote about four chapters. She writes it in English, so it's a bit difficult, but it was her decision after all :)

I think if you want to show some short-stories to other people you could go to http://www.fanfiction.net (http://www.fanfiction.net). My sister showed some of her stories there, too :] I guess it's good for "exercising" :P

You can do and be anything you want to do or be. All you have to do is put your mind to it. Only you can make the first step no matter what others say.

As for posting my work I don't and I think I explained it before. But anyone is welcome to read my poems in the poetry section "Scroll's Poetry Snippets".

I've been working on this children's book this year. Had to put it down , I"m illustrating it and writing it so this will be a long term project. It is fun when I get finally into the studio and close the door and have hours of uninterrupted solitude so I can really concentrate....... (wow ..... I will finish some day)

I just finished typing in the second 3 subject spiral notebook of my book. I about cried cause it was so overwhelming. I remembered when I started typing in my book and thought back then it will take me forever. But when I finished the first notebook and started the second I thought well I am about halfway through. Now I'm on the thrid notebook and it is very thrilling. Thinking I am that I am that much closer now of being done with my book and getting it sent off to be published.

That's so awesome! I've always thought that doing an illustrated kids book is something I would love to do, but sadly I don't have the illustrative talent.

At the moment I'm working on two major projects - the first is a purely fictional novel-length piece, which is so far only about a quarter written but that quarter has already gone through one major edit/re-write. The second piece is somewhat autobiographical, but not in a strict sense... I guess "based on a true story" is the best way to explain it... it's basically describing the events in my life that led to my PTSD, and while it will be factual in nature I didn't want to be restricted to only facts. Saying that, I don't think anything in there will actually be innacurate, I just think you are allowed more artistic license if you say "this is fictional" as opposed to saying "this is autobiographical".
I possibly won't offer this piece for general publication anyway - the main purpose of writing it is just so that my best friends have some sort of reference, an explanation of why I have this disorder, a way of thanking them for their support throughout and hopefully putting it into perspective a bit.

I'm currently writing a book that, when finished, I plan to donate 100% of my profits to various humanitarian organizations around the world specifically RED and UNHCR because I am an active member in those two organizations. I wrote my first book when I was 13 and it was about a girl who is the daughter of a Jew struggling through World War Two. I started a book after that and it was a sort of a fantasy time story and it's got everything. In it, there are vampires, faeries (the evil ones), dragons and the whole bit. I wrote a series of short stories after that about this team of investigators who's specialty is cold cases and that ones set in 1920's London. My most recent project was "My Africa" and that's the charity book. I'm really hoping to finish it in time for my 17'th birthday.

First of all I had to quote this so I could see it. With it being in such a faint color I couldn't read it so I had to quote it to read it.

Second I wish you luck in your writing and it all sounds good.

What I always do is take a few hours or days off and go crazy. Really, it works. Just do anything you've always wanted to do like skydiving and inspiration will just come. Or, you could try coffee, that works too. ;D

Just sit back and take some time from what you are writing. It may be anything from a few seconds to a few days but something will come to you.

When I was writing my book and I got into a block situation I would ask my kids what they thought I should put. Maybe you can ask someone you can trust and ask for their idea of what to write next. It worked for me. When my kids gave me advice of what to do next I would put my 2 cents in and the words would just roll out of my fingers nonstop. At least until the next time I got into a block situation.

I've been working on a fantasy story in earnest (meaning I have an ending in mind) for a few months now. It's about a university student's relationship with a mermaid...the first chapter of it is up on my Wyvern's account (somewhere in my profile there's a link)

I'm trying to get a good first 'book' toether, and how do I do that? I figured if I based it on true things it would be easier. For example the leads are based on myself and one of my best friends growing up so it will have that truth to it, but it's also got huge artistic license with it also. :D

Wow, so many writers here! I truly admire those who get their projects ready and published - and sold, too. I really wish good luck and a lot of inspiration for all of you and your works.

I have been working on my book for five years now. It's a theory book. I have no academic degree so the project is very difficult for me. And I'm a perfectionist which doesn't help the situation at all. I have written about 400 pages of messy notes. Some chapters I would like to consider as done and ready but when I read them afterwards, they sound so naive! 400 pages is way too much text to handle and now i've got a huge problem how to squeeze it all together and make it a book that would be interesting, logical, with all the right theories, no mistakes and no stupidities in it... HUH! :o

Music always works well. Or some times a change of scenery. One time I went to see a band called "Off Kilter", it's just guys who play old Metallica Cover tunes on bag pipes. ha ha ha. Imagine.

But it kinda gets the old right brain in gear.

Well, I wouldn't call myself 'a writer' but I have written as a hobby since childhood and have hundreds of notes and half-written manuscripts littering my house.

I've always dreamed of becoming a published author but it's anybody's guess if that'll ever happen. I'm not giving up though, I enjoy it too much.

For now I'll settle for posting some stories in the fanfiction section, so stay tuned folks!....

Same here, lol! But I think to be a published autor you need an exceptional gift, which I know I just don't have.

Victoria, for writers block, music is good, and also just reading something else. That always inspires me. If you have a livejournal, they have propmpts for journal entries up sometimes which can just jog your memory.

Hey friends! I've written several short stories, one or two shared here and a few kept private. I've also written a play and tons of poetry. My latest accomplishment that was quite the challenge was a narrative/epic poem that I just completed this past semester. It ended up being fifty pages. It is titled The Faithless Masquerade. I do, however, hope to be able to write a book/novel some day. :)

Hello all.

IF any of you are looking to be writers, but don't necessarily want to commit all your time to it just yet (busy with othet things, too much to do at the moment, waiting for inspiration, etc.), you should definitely, definitely get little things published a little bit at a time. It helps you get noticed, and it doesn't take up time if you write a poem or short story, or even submit an old one you've completed. I have a poem that I just got published in a book and I'm only 17; it took about 6 months! I'm headed for more (SMALL) publishing, but it's a great start! Look online for places that need writers, or send what you have to contests or websites and such. One I like that is easy to access and use is actually Poetry.com, which I thought was a scam but actually wasn't! So, please, if you have the time, check that site and others out and you will deifnitely get something published by the end of the year ;) Hey, at least it's a start!'

Good luck and the best to all of you. If any of you become writers, I'd love to hear from you or see anything you might have done already.

What an awesome thread!

I love writing, and its one of my greatest dreams in life to write a book. Up to this point, I've written a few things of fanfiction (on this site ::) ) and a few poems and short stories. One of my short stories a friend of mine would read to his cousin as a bedtime story, and the kid loved it... I consider that a major accomplishment haha.

I'm in the middle of writing a bigger work now. I don't know what it's going to be exactly, but its in the "novella" ranks now, I guess. At least in my head... ::) I don't know how I'm going to have time to write it out once school starts. It just feels good to write down the scenes that run around in my head all the time!
