Title: What is your favourite book?
Post by: Elijahs Impact on October 23, 2005, 04:35:26 am

If this thread has already been done I apologise but I couldn't find one. I only found 'What was your favourite childhood author/book' so I guessed that this one hadn't been done before.
So...
what is your favourite book(s)?

I love all of the Harry Potter books, and I love The Lord of the Rings.
I also like the star wars books.
I'm not the kind of person who just picks a random book at the library and decide to read it, so I re-read my books, therefore, I have not that many favourites.

I just finished the 6th Harry Potter book.
I had to wait longer for the release of the German version, but it was absolutely worth to read it. I had tears in my eyes because of the sad end. How will this go on ??? :'(

What do you mean?
Harry Potter?

I grew up reading it. Started when I was about 10, so I got hooked.
Honestly, if you don't read them, you're really missing out. They're a fun, light, enjoyable read.
Yes, they're aimed mainly at children. But that's the fun in it.
To be honest, childrens books are better than adults books in my opinion. I don't like books that 'challenge' you, I like books that I can curl up with, have a giggle and not try and translate any 'hidden messages' that pop up in a lot of adult books.

If you see what I mean...

Harry Potter is fantastic! ;D

Oh, and I also love the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. I forgot to mention that in my original post. :)

Hands down, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. She has such a brilliant style. Everything about her writing is beautiful from the language to the settings.

Also: Interview with the Vampire, Rebecca, Angela's Ashes, Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera, Great Gatsby, Mists of Avalon... LOTR and HP, obviously, but the better question would be who doesn't love those books? LOTR was bedtime stories since before I could talk. I'm named partially after Rosie Cotton, as well... My father is a bit of an... enthusiast...

A toast to fantastic literature. ;)

Les Miserables by Victor Hugo is my favorite book of all time. It is just heart wrenching, and says so much about human beings, and it's a really good story. I also love LOTR, and Harry Potter, and Eragon.

For now I'm mostly reading lighter stuff, like detective novels. I love Sue Grafton, Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs, and other detective/medical mystery type stories.

My favorite book of all is the Bible. It has had a major impact on every aspect of my life. But next to the Bible (which I personally consider more than "just" a book) my all time favorite books are the Anne of Green Gables series (and anything else by LM Montgomery). I also love classics such as Sign of the Beaver, Shades of Grey, Little Britches, Little House on the Prairie series, Carry on Mr. Bowditch...I could go on and on. Can you tell I love to read. :D

I just finished reading "Touching Spirit Bear." My sister recommended it to me awhile ago and now I finally read it. It's such an amazing story. A very incredible lesson I learned. It made me cry and laugh and think. The auther (oops I forgot his name please forgive me Lol, I'll look at the book later) writes with so much detail. So in the nasty parts (not too nasty, but I won't spoil it for you) he writes every bit of it. and when the character comes close to death on different occasions the author actually describes it and it just made me appreciate life more.

So many favourites... of course I'd have to say the Harry Potter books and everything Douglas Adams has ever written. But my absolute favourite would have to be Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Very, very wonderful writing.

I love her! I always feel so classy and sophisticated when I read her. My mom got me into her. "Pride and Prejudice" is probably my favorite.

I know it seems a bit childish at first glance, but there really is more to it than meets the eye: "Harriet the Spy" is one of the greatest books I have read. The characters are so eccentric and fascinating! This book really made me want to be a writer.

"The BFG". I'll read absolutely anything by Roald Dahl ("Charlie & the Chocolate Factory", "The Witches", "The Twits", "Danny: Champion of the World", etc.) but this is my all time favorite of his. It's classic. I've even christened my boyfriend "the BFG" because he's so tall. Hee hee!

The Harry Potter books are amazing! I finished the latest one not too long ago! So sad! But I didn't cry (even though my favorite character died!); I just lay still for a very long time....

Ah! I almost forgot! "Maurice" (pronounced "Morris") by E.M. Forester. This is - words can't even describe! Stunning; blew me away!

Anything by Nick Hornby (he did High Fidelity, About a Boy and a bunch of other's. And I've read them all ;D). He is such a witty writer, I love books that can give me a good laugh, and a good cry all within a chapter. He's good like that.

I also love Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, who is same author that did the Sandman series (comic books). That is the only book I've read by him so far though.

At the moment I'm reading Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy... and I loooove it!

I dont know about anywhere else but in England it has been out of print for ages and I had to get it off amazon but it has recently been re-released so I DEFinately recommend it. You can seriously fall in love with Landen and his band are brilliant.

I have a lot of favorite books:

"The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien: first read it when I was about 15, read it again every year since.

"House of Leaves" by Mark Danielewski: it's so totally different from anything else I've read.

"Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts: I loved it from the very first page. I haven't even finished it yet (am at page 300 - still 650 wonderful pages to go) but I know I will read it again many times.

"The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco: I had some problems with the Latin texts in the beginning of the book but once you get through that, it's one of the most fascinating crime stories.

'Jane Eyre' By Charlotte Bronte
'Orlando' by Virgina Woolf

I don't really have one favourite book. I know a lot of great books.

I'm a fan of Astor Berkhof but he's Belgian so most of you won't know him.

I also love to read books by Jane Austen (especially you could have guessed it Pride and Prejudice ;D).

Of course I cant forget Lord of the Rings.

I also like books by Virginia Woolf although they're pretty hard to understand.

And there is much more which I can't recall right now...

You don't read "too much". Reading is always pleasure. I'd like to read as much as you do, really. I think I'm even a litttle bit envious, in a good way (forgive me my bad English, it's not my native language, so... sorry. )))

My favorite books of all time are the Lord of the Rings series and my favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien. Personally, I don't think anyone will ever be able to beat that kind of writing, he was a genius. I don't think anything can ever come even close to that. I also like The Chronicles of Narnia and C.S. Lewis, and the Harry Potter books too, but not nearly as much as LOTR. I love reading, especially fantasy books, they are my favorite. :)

Technically a play, but published in book form so I think it counts: Arcadia by Tom Stoppard.

My two most favorite books besides the Bible of course is:

Anne Of Green Gables (read it about three times).

Dr. Suess' Fox In Sox (I know it sounds corny but when my oldest child brought it home from school library when she was in the 2nd grade (she is now in the 8th grade) I fell in love with it. Because it makes me laugh to the point of tears in my eyes before I get done reading it). It is so embarassing to check it out of the local library with me being 38. I even asked for a copy of it for Christmas but didn't get it :(. Oh well I just love it).

Oh and my book I am writing, my hubby's two books he is writing, and my 13yr old's book she is writing.

My favorite book is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. I've read it 16 times, although it's been a few years since I've picked it up.

I have a number of other books that I like almost as much and I would list them but for the fact that it's very late and I'm practically falling asleep at the computer. ;D

Well it's more like a comic... but it's called Manga. ;) The Manga I've been reading is Fruits Basket. I just finished Vol. 2. It's really good! :-*

I've watched the Anime, but I think I like the Manga better. But the Anime I think is easier to understand. ;D

My number one favorite book is the Bible. Everytime you read it it's like there is something new!

And I HATE Harry Potter with a passion... I hate witchcraft. And yes, I have read the 1st 2 books. They were both CRAP. (believe me, I didn't read them because I wanted to. I had to for school.)

My favorite series is the Series of Unfortunate Events... they're really well done. I was sad to read the last one :'(.

just like I can never name LOTR as a fave movie (it goes beyond that and dosn't give other films a fair chance..) I can't name That, Harry Potter, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galexy or any of the Discworld Novels to my Fave. It just isn't fair, as they go far beyond a favorite ;)

I am currently enamoured with Neil Gaimons American Gods

Everything is Illuminated was just a stunning piece of art, IMHO.

I but think my favorite book would have to be Good Omens (by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman)

Yeah,it is good. But,I have got it in English. So,I cannot understand much. But,I try...It isn't my mother language.Did you read the tale of 2 cities from Dickens ? :)

Title: Re:What is your favourite book?
Post by: Storyteller on July 02, 2007, 09:38:59 am

Yes, I have. I think I've read all of Dickens except "The Old Curiosity Shop" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood". I guess they should be the next two on my reading list. I don't know how I missed Curiosity Shop but I am dreading Drood. LOL It's the one he didn't finish (he died) and I kind of hate to start an unfinished story.

I LOVE "A Tale of Two Cities"! "It is a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done. It is a far, far better rest i go to than I have ever known" or words to that effect. I guess I just love Dickens for the comments he makes on the social ills of his times. He was quite the social rebel, that man. I admire him for speaking out. Too bad it didn't pay well.

You can learn a lot of history from Dickens, if you pay attention. The key to Dickens is learning how to read him. Dickens was always in debt, and often in debtors' prison because like many famous authors, he actually lived from his writing. Most of his books ran first as serials in magazines and he was paid by the word so he can be forgiven for being a bit...wordy. LOL After you've read a few of his things, you'll develop a knack for what you need to read thoroughly and what you can read quickly. After that, he isn't daunting at all.

I hope you enjoy him, but I bet he can be a bit of a task as an English language lesson.

Hugs,
Rach

Well, technically LOTR, but since almost everyone will include this, I'll say "A Prayer For Owen Meany" by John Irving...

It features one of the most eccentric characters in all literature, the titular Owen - an extremely small-statured child, with pale otherworldly looks, an indescribable voice that is represented by using ALL CAPITAL LETTERS for his dialogue, and who thinks he is an agent of God!

Other faves are "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.

My favorite book(s) out of the Twilight saga was the first one and the last one. I really did not like second one much, because there was more descritions than the actual talking of characters, if you know what I mean. :P
The third one was nice. :)

Now just have to read Harry Potter.... I was to young to read the first one. lol.
