Title: What book will you never read?
Post by: elwoth on September 03, 2004, 09:15:22 am

I usually think that when somebody took the time to write something, it's worth reading it, but (and I'm very sorry) I will never read the Harry Potter books.

What about you, guys?? What book (or books) will you never read??

HARRY POTTER?!? :o

Oh well, it's not me. But what would I never read? Hmm...probably the Tom Clancy books. My dad's obsessed with them (not as much now, but he still likes them) and I never saw anything special about them.

And my whole life I've refused to read the Sweet Valley books. So probably still those. Hmm, you've got me thinking, lol.

LOL, i know that lots of people are just crazy about Harry Potter, but i'm not.
I wouldn't be very keen on reading Tom Clancy either :D

I'm one of those crazy Harry Potter fools...they're just so good! Whee.

I probably won't get into reading those romance novel things for a loooong time. Probably when I'm old, but not anytime soon.

Or non-fiction books! Can't stand them. At all. Gah!

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoth on September 03, 2004, 01:36:44 pm

Probably when you're old??? Maybe never!!! those romance books are so bad. ;D

Post by: HobbitFancier on September 03, 2004, 02:21:00 pm

Ick.. romance novels.. I can't stand those. I think it's safe to say I'll never read Danielle Steel. Lol.

I'll also never read any of those "self-help" books. Or ones about politics.. blah.

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: LegolasBuzzgirl on September 03, 2004, 02:55:41 pm

No romance novels, and no crime novels. Oh- and never 'War and Peace' or books with titles like 'My boyfriend ate my bra'- teeny bopper books, you know?

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: Elven_gurl12 on September 03, 2004, 02:57:37 pm

Ha haa.. Romance novels.. wait.. my mom has tons of those.
*giggles*
They are soo funny. Wadda ya know.. theres one right her... lol
Ya, I prolly won't start reading any of those type of books any time soon!

EDIT: Ohh, forgot. I would never ever read a biography on any politician, or a book on anything political.

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoth on September 03, 2004, 03:41:22 pm

political stuff are kinda boring, but some detective novels are just as bad ;) :P

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: Etahiel on September 03, 2004, 04:02:53 pm

Hmm.. I also don't want to read harry Potter. Maybe it's great book, but it's too long and I'm too old ;D
I also don't like political stuff and Danielle Stell.. it also not for me. Maybe some day.. ;D

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: Hyper_gurl on September 03, 2004, 08:43:43 pm

i will only ever read historical fiction if i'm forced to read it for school.

and i will never read Charles Dickens again. I knows his books are classics, but i had to read Great Expectations, and it was mind-numbingly boring. God, i get bored just thinking about it.

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: HerMajesty on September 03, 2004, 09:55:15 pm

<3 Harry <3 Potter <3

Hahaha, Charles Dickens. I read Great Expectations twice and yeah... very boring. ;D

Two of my friends are voracious readers of romance novels. I always give them a hard time about it, because the covers always have some Fabio character on them -- shirtless of course. 8)

I'll never read books about mystical vampires/pixies/whatever. I love Harry Potter but that's about as magical as I go. :P

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: ElijahLover713 on September 03, 2004, 10:01:30 pm

I agree about the vampires, Mer. Like the Anne Rice series or whatever they are. Scary.

What?!! How?!!! Why?!!! Seriously, unless you're a bible belter, you should so read the books!!!

And for me, umm... any books that are crappy.

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoth on September 04, 2004, 02:35:59 am

It's like a rule I decided one day, but I never apply it lol
that's why I ask you what books are 'crappy'?? it depends on taste, and in general no books can be said to be crappy. to me, HP is crappy.

Etahiel: thank god, i've found someone who won't read HP!!! ;D

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: ElijahLover713 on September 04, 2004, 02:51:39 am

You guys don't know what you're missing. ;) I thought I'd never read them until I had to read #2 for school. I decided I'd better read #1 first, and I was hooked. ;D

I'll probably never read Shakespeare unless it's mandatory for school. As much as I loved reading Romeo & Juliet in English last year, I enjoy a book (er...play) that doesn't take so much energy to figure out what it means. Hmm.

Mer, I agree...No Charles Dickens for me. I had to read Great Expectations as well, I was just about dying.

Anything political, as well. Shame I have to read "Democracy In America" for summer reading. Gah, so boring!

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoth on September 04, 2004, 05:00:56 am

so many people say i should read HP, but i will resist!! LOL my brother and my mother have read them all, but my dad is just like me: trying not to!! it's more like a challenge ;D

Oh, I love Shakespeare. He was a genius. I love his style :) And Romeo and Juliet I have read several times;]

yeah, shakespeare is awesome, but i can understand that some people do not like his writing...romeo and juliette is so funny, so tragic, so burlesque!!! lol i mean how two young people can possibly kill themselves out of love?? it happens in books only, it's kinda like those romance books, lol ;D macbeth is better

LOL Etahiel :-*

'Two starcrossed lovers take their lives'
Now I said I'd never read romance novels, but I'll make an exception for Shakespear1 I love 'Macbeth' too!

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: Etahiel on September 04, 2004, 10:56:50 am

yes, Shakespeare's tragedies are too.. tragic ;D
I also like Mackbeth. And Hamlet is also one of my favourites;]
I think that his plays are real even in our times, they will be real forever;]
He also has great comedies, I read Wives from Windsor, but it was long time ago;)

Title: Re:What book will you never read??

Title: Re:What book will you never read??

I don't think I can say there are many books I will never read. Basically only the annoyingly annoying series, like Babysitters club, and Sweet Valley High. Which my friend tried for ages to get me to read but I didn't. Apart from books like that, cos I mean really, I wouldn't call them proper literature, I will read mostly anything.

Haha, I sound so snooty

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoodsgal18 on September 04, 2004, 09:50:12 pm

Okay, I'm usually open to most books, but I will definitely NEVER read "The Reliquary" by Preston and Child.

Basically because the "The Relic" scared me shitless and made me stay up with the light on for three nights.

So definintely not reading that one. Hand me any other book by them, they're fabulous... just not that one.

*shudders*

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: dominicsdoll on September 04, 2004, 10:14:13 pm

I will never read romance novels!!! Blah! I hate them! Books with romance in them, those are nice(because I'm a hopeless romantic when it comes to that sort of thing) but the shirtless hero guy books bother me.

I don't like political novels... it's like watch the Weather Channel.

I don't like too many horror novels, although some of Stephen King's stuff is really good.

But I love fantasy... and Shakespeare!!!

I was a total HP hater at one time too, but I was at my friends house one day(and she's been obsessed forever) it was around the time that POA came out, she couldn't stop talking about it, I picked it up... and now I'm hooked, very excellent series imo. :D

Because in HP they go around fighting orcs and destroying magic rings, which over in LOTR the hobbits all learn how to cast spells and mix potions right? :)

ermmm...quite right, LegolasBuzzGirl.
The Used: what's ripp off of LotR?? ??? ;D

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: Phlegerty on September 05, 2004, 09:07:16 am

Heaps of it has been ripped off. But then most fantasy has been ripped off from something else. The whole idea of the one little guy who has to save all of 'humanity' by defeating the evil guy who noone else can kill. And in the first book with the philsophers stone, which can return all his power, like the ring etc etc. And the dementors/nazgul etc etc. and the whole shelob/aragog giant spidery thing. the list goes on...
Not that I don't like Harry! I loooooove HP. I'm an obsessed fan. But I can see how it's been ripped off.

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoth on September 05, 2004, 09:57:56 am

oh, ok...like a general myth thing that goes with all those very fashionable movies these days.. thanks :D

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoodsgal18 on September 05, 2004, 11:13:39 pm

Yeah I see what you mean. I found it annoying at first. There are billions of books that rip off LOTR, or seem like they do. But they're still great books. Like the Wheel of Time series... I read the prelude, and it was such a ripoff I wanted to cry. They had a 'Black Rider' which when it passed you, you felt cold and not happy and just bleh. They had 'The Mountains of Mist' if that's not subtle enough.
But I don't think its quite fair not to read them simply because they're based loosely around the greatest storyline in the world.

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoth on September 06, 2004, 02:35:55 am

anyone seen 'secret window'??? there are more than one great story line in the world, and you can mix them...was it revenge, love...i can't remember, Morton Raigney was explaining them to his wife.

this is anna: 'black rider, mountains of mist'??? that's being a copycat??? ??? ;D

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: ElijahLover713 on September 06, 2004, 02:59:49 am

I saw Secret Window...sadly, I don't remember that part, lol.

I definitely don't think HP is a rip-off of LOTR. Frankly, I like HP better.

I would try not to read biographies...but The Diary of Anne Frank was awesome. Whee.

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoth on September 06, 2004, 07:34:14 am

it's a really short part in secret window...i've seen it too many times i guess.. ;D

maybe hp is better because it's not over yet.

bios???...i've read anna frank too, and it was very sad...i'd rather read something happier from time to time..when it's a true story, it makes me sad. read to escape reality, i do not really like bios and political stuff ;)

The only 'bios' I read are the ones for murders and stuff. But then I'm wierd! :)

John Grisham I won't read because they all sound so mass marketed and just too much the same. "The Jury" "The Firm" "The Client." Not my cup of tea. I have worked in a law firm and it's stuffy and boring and I sure don't want to read about it, lol. Besides I don't really like to read what everyone else is reading. There are exceptions like Harry Potter and Da Vinci Code, but generally I like to scout for lesser known novels.

Also I won't read anything from Oprah's book club because they're all insanely depressing. I like to enjoy what I read, not want to shoot myself, lol.

I'll never say never to a book, but I can tell you lot NEVER EVER EVEN CONSIDER reading Anita and me by Meera syal. I did it in english literature and it was the most boring book ever. I have never put a book down when I've started it, i always try to read it to the end just in case it gets better but i just wanted to burn that book! just a word of warning to the world ;)

There are a lot of books, stories, and novels with that general theme that were around waaaaay before Tolkien ever came about. There are also countless books after LOTR that have that same idea, but you wouldn't say those authors ripped LOTR off. ::)

Title: Re:What book will you never read??
Post by: elwoth on September 07, 2004, 02:48:30 am

i think that both HP and LOTR's authors took a lot from myths everybody knows, and thazt's why we find similarities...for instance, lots of things are taken from the bible or from greek tragedies and mytholigies in HP. In LOTR as well.

No- seriously. I once read somewhere that if someone writes a book, then that gives another few people ideas for their own books. Their's give others ideas and so on so forth until the end of time. So therefor, everyone's just ripped off the very first book ever written.

Maybe.

Maybe not...

I tried to read Moby Dick once, and that didn't work and isn't ever happening again. Great Expectations was really boring too... but I liked Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol. Other stuff I wouldn't read is romance (which my mom loves) and political books. Some non-fiction but it depends because I've had to read some things that turned out to be really interesting.

Title: Re:What book will you never read??

Frantic footy fans, those who want to hear about his personal life (why?!) and 10 year olds who idolise him probably buy Beckhams biographies. God knows why!

Philosophic stuff- hmm. One I heard yesterday-
"The question is not what is the meaning of life, the question is why do we ask?"

A book I've been recomended- 'Sophie's World'. It's a philosopy based novel apparently. *Shrug*

RLStine... rings a bell... remind me?

I saw a book in Waterstones the other day.
It was called "And then, it fell off in my hand"
Of course, my mind being what it is, I couldn't stop laughing.
It just begs for the question "What did?" to be asked.
And I don't think I want to know either.
And... this was in the KIDS section!! :o

I love Harry Potter.
But only the first 4 books.
It seems now that Rowling's train of thought is:
"I'm so rich. Yeeee. Oh, new book? Hmm, how to make it good? I know!! Make it LONGER than the last one!! How original of me!"
Sorry, but the only thing good about the 5th book was the last few chapters with the explanation of the whole Harry Vs Voldemort thing.
There was too much build up for me. OK, I like build up... but not so much that it can be split up into four bloody books in its self!! >:(
GAH!
I really hope the next one will be better.

She was a working class single mother. not poor, but not rich. She deserves it. but Book 5 seemed to be all "He's 15. I know, we'll make him descover girl and get all moody and hormonal at everyone! Oh, and lets have a crap DADA techer too!"
I'm waiting for Ron to rebel, dye his hair black and go goth, and for Hermione to get together with Malfoy. *Shrug* It'd be a twist...

(Ps- R.L.Stein- Goosebumps. They were bad...)

Ooh yeah, Goosebumps. I used to love those. ;D And then they came out with those "Choose Your Own Adventure" spin-offs. My brother and I had a huge collection of those and would read them all the time. The memories. 8) They weren't really 'scary' like Goosebumps were, or the Fear Street series was (those were pretty good).

'Fear Street' were like the 'Point Horror' books, but slightly better. Not hard mind...

'Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody', and 'Barry Trotter and the pointless sequal' (I think) are the book pardoies. The first ones good- havn't read the second one yet!

GAH!
I really hope the next one will be better.

i loved the 5th book. most ppl that i've talked to liked the 5th book better than all the others, as did i. i thought what u said about number 5 kinda went for number 4. number 4 was soooooo long (i know 5 was longer... but it seemed like more happened.) and i thought number 4 didn't get interesting until the end and that dude... his name starts with a C... dies.

but, yeah... Harry is getting very moody towards everyone... but i don't think it's spose to b hormones, my guess is that the scar is starting to affect him... and "voldermort's mark" is begining to make itself more known. he obviously has a connection with him... since he could see what his snake was doing. ... maybe harry's gonna go corrupt and start working with voldermort. ... ya never kno.

Fair enough. I can see why you would feel this way.
And I like to see other people's opinions.
As mine was mine.
My Auntie made me laugh... she borrowed the 5th from me, and she said that she didn't get past the 2nd chapter cos she was bored with it. lol
But she did read that bit with the news, where there is a budgie in Barnsley that's learnt to water-ski or something.
She thought that was pretty cool. Cos she was raised in Barnsley (She lives in Scotland now) and I still live there.

That is so cool though. That Barnsley is mentioned in such a huge book!!
It was also cool in "Prisoner of Azkaban" cos WaggaWagga (Australia) was mentioned, and one of my best friends lives there. ;D

I think the 3rd and the 4th books were the best ones. ;D

Personally, the 2nd and 3rd were my favorites.

War and Peace is a book I could never bring myself to read. Also trashy novels, westerns, and I don't know. But when I'm checking out a book, the cover has to look interesting. You sort of can tell a book by its cover in my opinon. ;)

i loved number 3! it was great! oddly enough, though... several of my friends that liked number 5... hated number 3! they said it was just a background book... ??? i seem to like the books better if somthing bad is happeneing to harry... ex: demontors... umbridge (which, by the way, that word means "excessive power" i thought that was really cool... but i'm a geek ::)) my faves are... in order of faves... : 5, 3, 2, 4, 1. i didn't really care for number 1. it WAS just a background book (or so it seemed) and there was a 2 wk period (in the book at least) where nothing happened.

maybe if i read 4 again, i'd like it better. i've only read it about 1.5 times. i need to read 4 and 5 again.

Ahh! i have to go do hw! bye!

Toni Morrison. I'm sorry, but that woman bores me to death -- and it's not easy to do that! I thrive on literary challenge.

Oh yes, and anything more by Robert Jordan. I will not reward someone for writing bloated 800-page books where nothing happens except recurring personal twitches and whines.

I will never read a book by John Grisham. Boring lawyer-type books, yuck!

I will probably never read or try to read Dickens again, as I couldn't get through any of his books without falling asleep.

I don't like romance novels, but I do enjoy a good cheesy detective novel now and then.

i am an avid reader and to me it seems a little curious, some of the books that have been listed are wonderful reads and i am one to say never say never especially when it comes to books as you get older your tastes mature and you find different things appealing. Now that being said a book i have heard about but will never read and i say never meaning it because of it's content not because of the way it is written is Mien Kempf the brilliant ravings of a sadistic lunatic is not something i feel would be enriching or i would get anything from at all!

Wow, a very old thread surfacing again... But an interesting one :)

I don't think I exaggerate when I call myself a book-addict. I'm currently reading my 45th book this year...

I have to agree with you Starleader when you say that your taste matures when you get older. I find myself reading books now that I wouldn't even have thought about five years ago. What I probably never will read are these typical chick-lit or stupid romance books. I can't even understand how people can like such nonsense.

Oh, and Starleader, you're probably referring to Hitler's "Mein Kampf".

Title: Re:What book will you never read?
Post by: Starladear on November 05, 2007, 07:42:46 am

that is the book in which i am referring to Brenda,(my German sucks lol) "my Struggle" as it translates to English! And for those of you who are interested on reading it be aware that the FBI and government agencies all over the world do track the selling and library traffic of this book and there are a few others as well that they monitor because of their content!

Title: Re:What book will you never read?
Post by: maryd on November 05, 2007, 02:43:49 pm

I was curious about Mein Kampf years ago and asked my librarian if he had a copy - not for any political reasons or because I believe Hitler was right or anything, just curiosity! :-\ ;D

There's a couple of genre's of books that I've never read simply because I don't find them interesting - eg. crime ::) - but thats not to say I would never read crime novels.

Possibly the only books I can think of me never reading are graphic novels or that kind of thing.

I love to read and hate that I don't have more time to do it.

What book would I never read? Well, I'm not a big believer in "nevers". If there is one thing I've learned, it's that life changes, and your thoughts and opinions with it. I often do things now I thought years ago I'd never do.

I suppose the thing I would be least likely to read would be anything written by a certain currently powerful political figure, if he can write, which I doubt. LOL I won't use any names to avoid a possible flame war.

Hugs,
Rach

There are so many books out there that we all will never read because no one could possibly read them all.
But Moby Dick by Herman Mellville is one I will never read and not for lack of trying.

We used to keep it around the house instead of warm milk or Tylenol PM. If somebody couldn't sleep, haul out Herman Melville.
