Title: To you future actors...
Post by: Cris on March 12, 2004, 06:54:42 am

Hi Girls!

As I could notice, many of you want to be actors (or are already in the business).

That's totally my dream, too! The problem is, I'm 22, I'm already graduated in advertisement, I work for a huge British goods company (or: in a cubicle seeing life going away) and drama schools here in Brazil are not very promising, if you know what I mean... the greatest accomplishment an actor can have here is perform in a soap opera for the greatest open TV broadcasting Co. However, I have no choice and am attending to classes!

My greatest dream is to study in the US, but then I'll have to raise a ridiculous amount of money to pay for living there for 3 years (illegal work is out of the question). But what really concerns me is my age...

Do you know any good drama school who take foreigners - BTW, I am Spaniard, but was raised in Brazil - especially as old as I am? Or any way to get an allowance / scholarship? Or any other good / bad advice???

Cris

Ha, there's my dream. I want to go to the U.S. too, I hear there's an acting school in New York that is just brilliant. But even so, just apply into small plays etc.

You mean The Actors Studio? That's the only one I know!

So, you're from Canada! Must be easier to go to the US than from a Country where for each dollar you've got to have 3 units of local currency... ;)

Anyway, aren't the opportunities for constructing an acting career good in Canada?

I know this was directed at Mary, but I felt like answering...

They're fairly good. Most people don't know that, though, because they're starstruck by Hollywood, and other big-name cities in the US. The thing is, though, you probably have a better chance landing a decent role here. Maybe you won't get paid as much, but at least it gets you started in the business, and it can lead to bigger/better roles in the future.

Oh, and apparently some Robin Williams movie is being filmed in Winnipeg. I think it might be just a rumour, but there've been a few bigger movies filmed here in the past few years. Last year they filmed 'Shall We Dance' (with Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere... ha ha) here.

Mary lives in Manitoba, so maybe she should think about that. ;)

First of all, excuse me for my terrible grammar! Gee, I should have been sleeping while I was writing :o

You have the bigger picture about how, let's say, cruel Hollywood is, but that doesn't even come to be my point! As here arts (drama included) are so less considered than there, I'm not that demanding! ;D Even because getting well paid is not what must concern us in the beginning...

But thanks a lot for the message! Feel free to answer anytime!

You are never too old to start chasing your dreams. And if it's acting you want...then it's acting that you're going to get. Now my question for you is what type of acting would you like to do?, for that depends on where you would end up going. (it is exceptionally helpful to be where the industry is) If it's theatre, then go to New York, Chicago and even, though I hate saying this LA. Film is basically the same places but more so La then anywhere else. ummm from what I know about Canada, Vancouver is most definitly the place to be film wise. I can't think of any Chicago schools but in New York look at AMDA (Academy of /music and Dramatic Arts), The NYU Tisch School of the Arts (Part of NYU), The Actor's Studio, the Manhatton Marymount has an amazing theatre program, and there's one more amazing one that Uta Hagen established but the name escapes me at the moment. In LA you have the Meyerhold studio, the LA AMDA, AFI and various colleges to which I'll plug mine...CSULA (not only do the professors still work in the industry and thus can provide the students with all kinds of possibilities but we are the only campus that will offer the graduated actor their equity card.)
I hope this helps a wee bit..drop me a line if you'd like any more info or if you need to be put in contact with anybody.

Well, i'm already into the stage career!
The thing is, you don't really need to go to any drama schools... Nobody can train you to be a better actor can they? You act from within... Well, i think thats how to act! ::) Just apply to any role-plays you like the look of. Acting isn't about fame and recognition. Its about wanting to act remember. ;) Many screen actors, like Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslett and even our Dommie and Billeh and Ian were spotted on the stage.
If you want some screen experience, then go and apply for advertisments or music videos and so on so forth... Our very own little Elijah was spotted from barely three seconds of a music film... You could be recognised and become a well known screen persona.

Me, i'm content on whatever i'm doing as an actor. I wouldn't really want to be a screen actor mind you, there is so much bitchyness about weight and looks nowadays. I'd just get way too depressed... But i'd like to direct the screen though. :D :)

I hope i've helped in some way... ;) :-*

Hey everyone!

It's nice to see a thread like this because it is my dream too and I haven't been able to write about it before with other people that feel the same way. Ever since I was old enough to realize that my ambition and dream is to become and actress, I have been acting. I love standing on stage and performing in any way, either through acting, singing or dancing as long as I get to be on stage I have a great time! When I was younger I was really shy and hardly ever wanted to do anything in front of people. I regret that now, but you can't turn back time and change things like that so it's just something I have to deal with. It's just that I wish I had dared do more things like that when I was younger because then first of all my family and friends wouldn't be doubting that I could become and actress and I would have great experience in the business by now. At the moment I am studying theater/drama at advanced level at one of the good performing schools in Sweden. Which actually brings me to my next problem - Sweden! Most people don't even know where Sweden is and hardly any actors/actresses or other performers from Sweden have become internationally famous. So how am I expecting to make it? I just keep telling myself never to give up. It's all about how bad I want it. And as Grawsywoll says in the post before me. Acting isn't about fame and recognition, it's about wanting to act. Which is so true and I do want to act, I love acting. Being on stage just makes me so happy and makes me feel so proud in some way. I can't think of really doing anything else in my life.
Grawsywoll also mentions that applying for role-plays or advertisements etc. might be a good idea if you want experience. Well, that's another thing about Sweden, there isn't that much of that. Specially not for youngsters and they mostly choose the people that are experienced. And yes, I might have experience because of the acting courses I have gone and considering that I now am on advanced level but even so it is very hard to make it. And getting in some movie in Sweden is not going to make me internationally famous...I'm totally contradicting myself here, it is about wanting to act but at the same time I feel I want to act in front of a more broad audience than just Sweden...

I'm sorry this turned out to be so long I just got so exited that I finally can speak my mind about this because I really don't have many people I can share my thoughts with without getting a "you'll-never-make-it" as a response.

Good Luck to everyone - and me!

xx Tina

Have you ever considered studying in the UK, the schools here are free and i think that there are opportunities .. i also want to be an actor and am currently waiting for an acceptance letter for a local drama school .. i mean you can study drama anywhere then develop later look at Charlie Thezyon (dunno how her name is spelt) and also just a quick ques for anyone is Renee Zellweger British im not sure??

Two things:

1. Charlize Theron
2. RENEE ZELWEGGER IS NOT BRITISH :o

I'm sorry. Had to be said, lol.

As for on topic business, like already said - it's never too late to follow your dream :) And acting schools can't teach you how to act well, but they can teach you about how to present yourself in the best life. They'll give you the formal training you need.

Alternatively, do a part-time course, especially if you already have a job. It helps :) I want to be a screenwriter and director, and plan on going to film school after university. Best of luck to all!

Jackie.

Hey!

First of all, thanks for the help of all of you!

Meg, you are so nice! I completely agree that you have to be near the industry, that's why I want to study in the US (or UK). And when you say CSULA is the only campus that will offer the graduated actor their equity card you mean among the other schools you mentioned?

Sam Zie, you said schools in UK are free, which ones? Even for non British students who are admitted?

And Christina, I was watching a documentary once saying that Swedish movies were discriminated abroad because they had a lot of sex scenes... but I don't think this is about all the movie styles there, is it?

Hi ANna! How are things going?

Cris

Hmm... all this talk about acting makes me want to go back into the idea of becoming an actor... haha crazy stuff. Thanks (no really, thanks!) I needed some encouragement myself.

I agree with what everyone says basically. Doesn't matter what your age is, and acting schools can't make you do well (though they can give you pointers and help.)

There was a school in New York I looked up once... can't remember what it's called though... I really wanted to go. It seemed like a good place...

Added:
I met this person on the internet, and she's really good friends with an actor (James Kirk,) and she told me that he started out in plays and stuff, and then he worked up to being on a couple films (Final Destination 2 and X2.) I talked to him a few times, and he's really awesome. He said that working in plays first is probably easiest 'cause then you'll get a little taste of what it's like. He also said it's different in ways because for plays, you pretty much only get one try to get things right, but on-screen movies you can have multiple takes. (Lvl... bloopers are great.) So in a way, on-screen movies sound easier than plays, don't they? Haha. James also said that if you try and believe in yourself, it's very well possible that you could get into acting. And he loves it, too. He wants to keep going after he graduates...

Yeah, so I'd stick with the plays first and stuff.

lol .. do u study drama at school?! .. dont u have any voluntary drama theatres over there .. im gonna go and join one here soon just to get some more experience .. i was unfortunate when i was at school not to have any drama classes or anything there .. so im currently very unexperienced .. so im very nervous and shy when it comes to performing thats why i think i messed up my audition .. hopefully they will c though that im not experienced and hopefully will understand that im good but get nervous .. thats what they said at my audition anyway!!!!
Are you sure that you want to get into soaps sometimes it hard to shake off the label .. it'd prob be good to try for drama shows they are not as bad!

Be extremely careful with the agent thing. In all honesty when you're first beginning to play the game, they aren't entirely necessary. (I've found better work without an agent then some people have with one.) and they can sometimes be limiting in your choices..a few that I went to said, "well we really don't want you doing theatre" My response was thank you and out the door I went. Do they help, well in the long run yes they will. But to start, don't get caught up in that pretty shiny world of facades. Love the art and work towards that vision first. Then slowly begin to work in the other elements when necessary. Seriously, try it on your own first. You might be very surprised....and much like everybody with and without an agent, frusterated. :)

Cool thing that you want to do two professions!! It shows a lot of ambition and future planning on your part.
