Title: ::Frequently Asked Questions ~ READ BEFORE POSTING::
Post by: MysteriousMrWood on August 30, 2003, 03:40:33 pm

Have a question you want us to add to this list? PM me or any other moderator, and we can add it!

What are the rules of the board?

We have 10 basic rules concerning what not to post, and they're pretty much just common sense. You shouldn't have any problem following them. :)

The administrator of the board, Lucy (elvenmuggle), has made these rules, and they have been amended over time by the moderators.

How do I post pictures?

How to post pics from a website:
--Note that you can't post pics from geocities because it will not show up.

1. First, get the URL or address of the picture (e.g. http://always.ejwsites.net/images/celebx3.jpg) by right clicking on the picture you want, going to properties and copying the whole URL or address.

2. Whether you're inserting it into your signature, or into a message, it's the same code. To insert a picture just type:

How do I post pictures from my computer?

1. First, you need to get a pic hosting account such as:
www.mysitespace.com
www.picturetrail.com
www.photobucket.com

(Note: These are all free services)

2.Once you have an account, upload the picture you want from your computer.

3. The picture will now have a URL or address, you can usually get this address by clicking on the uploaded image in your file directory and clicking on view, it should appear in your browser, so you can just copy the address. If this isn't the case, right click on your pic, go to 'Properties', and copy the URL from there.

4. Everything is the same, including the tags:
[ img ]URL OR ADDRESS OF PICTURE[ /img ]
Remove the spaces.

~~Again, use the Preview button.

How do I change the number of stars I have under my name?
How do I change the title above the stars? (ex- Elijah Worshipper)

The stars under your name, and your title, change depending on how many messages you post.

0-50 - Elijah Fan
after 50 - Elijah Worshipper
after 300 - Forum Chatterbox
after 800 - Elijah Obsessed!
after 1500 - Custom Title (meaning you can choose what to put there)

The max number of stars you can have is 5. Moderators automatically have emerald stars, and Admins automatically have bronze stars.

I've reached 1500 posts, how do I get a custom title?

Simply PM the title you want to Mer (HerMajesty), Jodi (Miss Hazy), Laura (ElleJay) or Lucy (elvenmuggle).

How do I center things?

For signatures:

<center>SIG HERE</center>

* Replace the <> with []

For messages:

Type your text or coding, highlight it, and then click this button:

Voila!

How do I get an avatar?

First, go to your profile editing section, by clicking on this button:

Once there, scroll down to the field that says 'Personalized Picture' and follow those instructions. Pretty basic - either you pick one of the pictures from the list (there are many, many to choose from!) or you find a picture you like off a website or your computer (if it's on your computer, upload it to a webhosting service like Angelfire.com (http://angelfire.com)) ..Then just type in the URL of the image into the field that says 'I have my own pic', check the box, and then save. Make sure you've type in your password at the beginning of the profile, or else your changes won't save!

What will happen if I don't follow the rules?

Although when you joined, you should've read the rules, it's understandable if you forget and break one accidentally. A member of the staff will PM you, or let you know in the thread that you're violating the rules. If you continue to do so, either your posts will be deleted, or you'll be banned from the forum, according to our system of three strikes, you're out. ;)

1st time: Warning
2nd time: Temporary ban [Changing of password; after a certain amount of time, it is returned to you through e-mail]
3rd time: If there is a third time, you're banned forever.

This may sound tough, but the rules really aren't hard to follow. They are just basic codes of conduct. :)

Does Elijah himself ever come here?

We have no way of knowing that, because he has never posted as himself and let us all know that he's here. (And if he did, we're likely to not believe him. ;D) He is a self-proclaimed geek, though, and does have internet access, so there's a good chance that he may have stumbled across Always & Forever before.

We do know for sure that he does visit AintItCool.com and TheOneRing.net.

How do I make a link?

If you want to make a link where people click on some text, and get to the site that way, type this:

[*url=type url in here]PHRASE[*/url] (without the stars)

Which would look like:

PHRASE (http://type url in here)

If you just want to make a link clickable, like http://dark-horse.tk, you would type this:

[*url]http://dark-horse.tk[*/url] (without the stars)

Which would look like:

http://dark-horse.tk (http://dark-horse.tk)

How do I properly quote what another member said?

Just click the 'quote' button ( (without the star)

Are 'Keeper's Of...' lists allowed?

The run-down on this:

A member from the That's the Clay forum (dedicated to the wonderful Mr. Aiken) came over to A&F, and brought with her the 'Keeper Of...' fad.

Basically, how it works was, members would adopt parts of Elijah (e.g. his hobbit feet, his incredible personality, etc) and parade it in their signature.

The problem with it was that it got out of hand, and tons of 'Keeper's Of...' lists started popping up. There was even one for Andy Serkis! (Now, that's a great guy and all, but it's still going too far ;)).

So....you can keep anything of anyone that you want, but there just won't be any threads for it.

If you want someone to make you a banner for it, check out the Fan Art section and ask one of the talented artists there. :)

What are the A&F Board Awards?

Every year, a group of members get together online and host what is known as the A&F Board Awards. It's where members are nominated in categories such as "Elijah Know-it-all" and "Most likely to be Arrested," voted on, and presented with beautiful awards made by the lovely artists here.

Past Board Awards to Check Out:

~ 2002 - The Debut (http://always.ejwsites.net/YaBBSE/index.php?board=5;action=display;threadid=2114;start=0).

Awards made by Saura.

~ 2003 - the Anniversary.

Awards made by Saura, Paula, and Rebecka.

Can I change my screen name on here?

Yes, and without registering! You simply go to your profile (by clicking up at the top) and scroll down to:

Name:
This is the displayed name that people will see

In that field, you delete your current name, and type in whatever you want your screen name to be now. Whenever you make posts, your new name will appear. However, when you send PMs, your old name will show up. I'm not sure why that is, but it's just how it works. 8) Also, when signing in - you have to sign in with the original name you had. Even though you change your screen name, your user name is still whatever you signed up with in the first place.

How do I make a picture click-a-ble (That is, when you click on it, it goes to a certain site)..?

You type:

[*url=URL OR ADDRESS HERE][*img]URL OR ADDRESS OF PICTURE HERE[*/img][/*url]

(without the stars)

What does it mean when threads are sticked?

It means the thread stays on the top of the board and doesn't move down when members post in other threads (like it would if it were not stickied).. You can tell if a thread is stickied when it has this icon to the left of it:

What does it mean when threads are locked?

If a thread is locked, no one but one of the Moderators or Admin. can post in it.

When threads are locked, it's usually because:

  • The initial question being asked (e.g. Did Elijah attend Collectormania 4?) has been answered
  • The thread has gone wayyy off-topic
  • The thread is inappropriate, but not enough to get deleted (locked as an example of what NOT to post..things like that)
  • The staff created a thread only needs responses from the Moderators or Admin. - like this one. These kind of threads are also locked because too many responses from other members clutter it up
  • The thread is on a break. A good example of this is the Harry Potter RP. This is locked occasionally, when its participants are on vacation.

  • You can tell a thread is locked when it has this icon to the left of it.

All of a sudden, the text on the board got very big - how do I change it?

This happens from time to time with many computers. It's not an error on the board's part, it's just something computers do. To fix this problem, do this:

Go to View at the top of your internet broswer. From there, go to Text Size, and then go to Smaller. (Or whatever size you prefer).

View>>Text size>>Smaller

What do I need to do if when I try to put my signature picture up, all that shows up is a red X?

This is usually because a) the place you're hosting your picture does not allow direct-linking or b) the place you're hosting your picture is down. Sometimes, your picture will show up if you right-click on it and choose 'Show Picture'. If it doesn't, and you know for sure the website does allow direct-linking (for the record: Geocities does not), then please contact a member of the staff for help. :)

How do I edit something I just said in a post? Or, if I started a thread, how do I change its title?

Just click on this button , at the top right-hand part of your post, and make your changes.

What does this it mean when "new" is written by a thread? Does it mean the thread is new?

Actually, when you see by a thread, it just means there have been new posts since the last time you've visited it (if you've never visited the thread at all, there will still be a sign).

Is this the first Always & Forever: Elijah Wood forum?

Nope! There was one made on EZBoard awhile back, in 2002. You can view it here (http://pub52.ezboard.com/balwaysandforeverelijahwood). There are still people posting there as well! :o ;D

How do I change the font size or font, of my text?

You do [*size=#][*/size]
(without the stars) to get a bigger font. Just change the # to the size you want.

For font, you do
[*font=Verdana][*/font]
(without the stars)

An easier to way to do it without typing the code:

You see the buttons next to "Add YABBC tags"? Look for the two ones on the top row, to the far right. the A with arrows and the red A. The first is for font size, the second is for font itself.

You just highlight you text and click the buttons.

What is ICQ and those little purple and red flower icon things?

ICQ is a chat program that's been around for a loooong time. The flowers are its symbols. If someone is green, they're online. Red, they're offline. Also, instead of names for screen names, you have numbers.

On some members' signatures, it says "I am Frodo from the Forum Fellowship" or "FF's Pip". What is that?

The Forum Fellowship, or FF for short, is a Lord of the Rings roleplay where members get to play characters. You can find it in the LotR section.

What is the Dirty Room?

As one of our members so eloquently put it ;) -- the Dirty Room is where we go to talk about all the stuff we're not supposed to on the regular board, i.e. SEX and all things DIRRRTY! It's currently located in the NC-17 forums.

There have been many, many Dirty Rooms in the past, but currently only one exists. Feel free to pop in and talk about anything dirty, as that is what it's here for.

How do I find out when I registered?

Find one of your posts on the board, and look to the left of it for this icon . Click on it, and your profile should load. One of the things mentioned on your profile is the exact time you registered. It should say something like this:

Date Registered: February 09, 2003, 08:43:51 PM

What does the 'Report to moderator' button do? When should I use it?

When you press that button, you will be asked to comment on the offensive post. After the form is completed, an email is sent to each of the global moderators, with a link directed to the offensive post.

Please only use the button when there is a need to remove/modify a post. The post should be offensive, rude, disrepectful...etc. Please do not use the button to ask us questions (like "Do u kno when Lij's going to b in England next?! Cuz this doesnt say!!!).

If you want to ask a question, please PM a moderator, or make a thread.

Also, if you see a thread posted in the wrong area, let us know with this button! Thanks.

What's a PM and how do I do it?

PM stands for Private Message. It is basically a message that you can send to a user (or multiple users) that only they can see; it is essentially e-mail that the board provides. You can send anyone a message that will go to their inbox at the top of the page.

Click on the under the avatar or click in a member's profile and go to the bottom of the page where it says "Send this member a private message."

What do some of these terms mean?

-Thread: "Toronto Film Festival" or "The Vines" are examples of threads. You can create a thread, and people can post replies.

-Post: This is a post. You create a post when you reply to a thread.

-Avatar: The picture under your username.

What do some of *these* terms mean?

LOL - Laughing out loud

LMAO - Laughing my ass off

WTF - What the f*ck

OMG - Oh my God

IMO - In my opinion

BTW - By the way

A/S/L - Age/sex/location

OMGWTBBBQ - Ohmygodwhatthef*ckbarbeque?!

ROFL - Rolling on the floor laughing

B/C - Because

W/E - Whatever

Note: In the Text Guidelines section of the Rules, this is stated and expected to be followed:

- Easy on the netspeak.
A few words here and there are okay, but not full paragraphs of it. Not everyone on A+F is a native English-speaker, so you can imagine the effect that a degenerate form of written English will have on their ability to understand what is written here. Expressions like LOL and LMAO are of course okay, but please refrain from excessive use of netspeak acronyms.

In essence: No talkin lyke dis okies b/c itz reallie annoying n hard 2 understand!!!!!1111

My post count isn't going up! What's going on?

Posts in the Fun Stuff Forum do not count. Many members in the past have tried to use this forum to create threads full of Spam (e.g. 'lol' as a post) in an attempt to boost their post count.

We understand that you want to reach 1, 500 and 5, 000 as much as the next person, but posting random, meaningless one or two-word posts doesn't make the Fun Stuff section any more "fun."

Spamming will not be tolerated in any other board here at A+F. If a mod notices a member doing this, their posts will be deleted.

We hope you understand and will follow this policy. Any questions can be posted (or PM'd) in the Site / Message Board section. ;)

Why are the "Fan Creativity" sections not visible when you're logged out?

Due to a recent incident of plagariasm, our resident technician, Jochen, altered the board code so the Fan Creativity section is no longer accessible to guests. In short, to prevent future copiers, you have to register to view those sections. In case we do have someone passing off an original story as their own (which has happened only once here), it'll be easier to track them down.

Girls, guys... Don't do this. If you get caught, you'll immediately be banned. It's not worth it -- plus, it makes our talented writers hesitant to share their stories, which is a loss for everyone.

You can read more about this here (http://always.ejwsites.net/YaBBSE/index.php?board=18;action=display;threadid=14521) - the Misc fan fic board info.

Will the age listed in your profile go up according to how long you've been here, or will it stay the same as whatever number you entered when you registered?

Actually, when you sign up, there is a field to type in your full birthday (month, day, and year of your birth). If you don't type it in, your age will read as "N/A" in your profile. If you do type in your birthdate, the age given on your profile will automatically update itself with every passing of your birthday.

Note: If you don't type in the year of your birth, it will still read "N/A."

If at any time you wish to take out or add your birthdate, just click on the profile button () at the top of your screen and edit the birthdate field.

How do you change your log-in password?

Go to the profile button at the top of your page. Enter your current password in the Current Password box. Enter a new password in the Choose Password box.

Note: Please don't give your password out to other members unless you completely trust them. You will be held responsible for the actions taken under your account so please be careful!

How do you change the skins for the board? More importantly, what are skins?

Skins are the different layout styles for the forum. The default skin is the blue one that you see when you're not logged in.

This means the background, banner, link colour, and text colours are all matching each other. If you change skins, all of those things will change.

To change your skin, click on Profile () on the top of your screen and put in your password as usual. Scroll down to Skin Selection, which is right below the area entitled "Language you wish to use."

Click the arrow and select a skin. Then click "Change Profile." Voila!
